I met her when she performed her Jazz Mass at Saint Ignatius Church at the University of San Francisco in the mid-1970s, when I was an assistant organist there. This was during the usual Sunday morning main mass, but the publicity must have been good, because the church was packed! The sermon, as it were, consisted of one of the priests introducing Williams performing a series of brief demonstrations representing a variety of jazz styles. Afterward, I was given the task of asking her to sign our guest book. Her autograph included the message "Snap! Wild! Crazy sounds!" She then politely explained to me that "crazy" was a good thing!

Mary Lou Williams is Marian McPartland's favorite mentor. If you need a bigger endorsement, then you might need to acquaint yourself with Marian McPartland and her music.
