Rock & Roll and R&B Saxophonist King Curtis (murdered in August 1971) He was stabbed to death in the heart by a man named Juan Montanez. Jazz pianist Jaki Byard (murdered on February 11, 1999) According to a source I read online, the police reported that his family last since seen him alive at 6:00 p.m. that night. Four hours later, his body was found as a result from a gunshot wound to the head. The eerie part? No signs of robbery, forced entry, or a struggle. His murder likely remains unsolved to this day. His killer has never been found nor identified. Unfortunately, I doubt his case will ever be solved.
Lenny Breau isn't forgotten and there are and have been numerous jazz guitarists who employ the techniques he pioneered. A partial list would include Tuck Andress, Sylvain Luc (RIP), Craig Wagner, Phil DeGruy, and Matteo Mancuso. I know Wagner and DeGruy and they are both very active players and Craig Wagner has been teaching at two universities and at jazz camps for many years. Quite a few of his students are successful players and teachers as well, so Breau's influence continues on through Craig's mentorship.
Chet Baker once had his front teeth knocked out in a drug deal gone bad. He had to quit playing for a couple of years and his embouchure was never the same.
Lee Morgan, Leo Watson, Frank Melrose, Eddie Jefferson, etc.
There's an amazing Lee Morgan documentary called "I Called Him Morgan" that goes in depth on his life and music
Thank you ❤
