It is incredible how this came up while I was looking for MOAR lore about the east 😍 now.... Will you talk about Impiltur next? 🌚
Eventually… I got a lot of Realms places to get through.
I take it that the orcs mentioned were the Gray Orcs. Alignment seems to matter less and less or it is forever morphing. Great Video, thanks for the research.
They’re originally from Zhentil Keep, and according to Races of Faerun gray orcs are from the Moonsea, so ya they should be gray orcs.
Appreciate this video -- I've been running my 4th campaign, first homebrew, in the Unapproachable East, mostly in the Great Dale in Uthmere, though it's about to transition to Rashemen and Thay for the remainder, and the dmsguild docs on those places give a little update to Thesk, it's nice to see it all collected in one spot here. Perhaps the biggest influence I took from Thesk was to add a small Shou Town into my updated Uthmere, and a bit of stuff about the Nine Golden Swords trying to expand into Uthmere and kick out the Shadowmasters.
No, Wizards are not like Harry Potter. Sorcerers are. Wizards in D&D learn how to manipulate the Weave. They only need to be smart. Wizards are like mathematians. Being gifted helps, but its 99% hard work.
In Ed Greenwood’s Forgotten Realms, they both require the Gift. That’s the lore the DMsGuild book I was citing uses so it’s the lore I was using for the video.
I’m not sure how this works… but there too many adverts in this video. I love your stuff but the adverts are frustrating.
If you're referring to UA-cam ads, it's not him and he can't do anything about it. Google has been trying to kill the platform for a while now and recent events are merely their latest attempt.
3:56 this is interesting - in 5e at least you can't banish a creature from Sigil to another plane, they are treated as if they were on their home plane already by the spell. Was this different in 2e? I thought the "you can only get into/out of Sigil via a portal" was there from the start?
Ya, that aspect of Sigil has been there since the beginning. I guess this is an ability they can only use outside of Sigil.
I have no idea why this channel doesn't have more subscribers, you're doing an excellent job putting together lore from different sources, finding great visuals and you are easy to listen to.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me.
19:40 "Common the language" Somewhat related, i just discovered that "Lingua Franka" (language of the franks) is not about france but an italian pidgin/merchant language which is also know under the name of Sabir
14:20 as a half szekely (hungarian subgroup) born in Szekelyland,Romania; i never heard that word, maybe a different dialect/ accent/ regionalism but i doubt that. (Edit) But i love the fact that it translated to "you know" like that fake story of how the kangoroo was named: "-Who are those nomads -oh those, those are ...(akward pass) tuigan (you know)."
@@alexandrub8786 Google translate was the only thing I could find when searching the word, so who knows 🤷♂️. I do like that “you know” story a lot.
@@Genghis_Sean "Reverso Context" is a good toll to verify if google translate is good.
No joke, this is my favorite Forgotten Realms lore channel on UA-cam. Awesome work, keep it up and looking forward to seeing the rest of Faerun (and maybe even the Utter East!).
Man. You're killing me 😂 I've listened to all your videos several times over. Sortof my go-to when doing household chores. I suppose we all need to eat our lore-veggies now and then, but this video is definitely a piece of broccoli.
@@neks0073 That means so much to me, glad you like my videos! Also I love broccoli lol
Your videos are amazing and filled with so much lore and knowledge. I can't imagine how much and effort you put into researching all this.
does shaundakul exist in 5e? i also remember when krash (george krashos) was just a dude on the FR mailing list.
According to Ed Greenwood, yes. Officially, nothing’s been mentioned of him. forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Shaundakul#History
Chunky lore video... Nice :)
They have stopped putting lore in books because ppl stopped reading ...
I don’t think people stopped reading. It’s just that back in the day, D&D was still a niche hobby, so the people who played it cared enough to buy lore books. Now it’s super mainstream and owned by a giant evil greedy corporation that only cares about maximizing their quarterly earnings, and will happily lay off a chunk of their employees to meet that. Books full of fictional history just aren’t going to sell as well to the mainstream Stranger Things fans the same way books with action packed adventures, magic items to flip through, and power crept subclasses that minmaxers will obsess over will. It’s very unfortunate but it’s just the way things are. I’m looking forward to the Forgotten Realms DM’s Guide and Player’s Guide releasing next year, but I’m not gonna get my hopes too high.
@@Genghis_Sean True. That is why they emphasize art a lot. Afterall, children's books have more art than text.
Yay
Great to see another video, this looks like a lot of work, thanks!
This is amazing! I definitely needed this for my research of the Unapproachable East (as well as Faerûn in general).
Glad it was helpful! I eventually want to cover the rest of the East. I’m running a campaign in Thay right now so the research for these videos doubles as research for my game lol.

Bro can't decide what capital to rule from
I found it rather odd that distaff members of the Nine Hells suffered the most during the transition from edition to edition, with Bensozia, Cozbi, Naome and Malagarde being written out.
Such a useful video, dude. I concluded my previous campaign with an Avatar of Tiamat, upon defeat, yeeting half of the party into one of the hells (determined by a dice roll). They rolled a seven! So this is where the other half of the party have to go to rescue them!
What a wonderful layer.
I wish there was more info on shars followers i find the idea of them fascinating wish we had a clearer in of there ranking structure and how dark justiciers work.
Thank you so much! I’ve been looking everywhere for videos that provide good info on Thay! I’m going to be running a campaign that will come to heavily involve Thay, so this resource is very valued and appreciated!
Glad to help! I’m also running a campaign in Thay so doing all this research was a way for me to campaign prep.
One correction: Nylessia is the Factol of the Mercykillers like Aryl Swansong is the second in comand. You confused them with the Harmonium in the story.
githzerai seem to be cool with this faction as they can also create stuff out of planar energy and mind power
the pillar of skulls is a good place to find info about many obscure things. it is one of the main reasons for adventurers and scholars to come to Avernus
Oinos (I-n-o-s, οίνος) means wine in greek so this is so funny to me. Wine demon 😅
The torturing of the souls is punishment for their sins in life, as agreed upon in the pact primeval. Lawful does not mean "good". Lawful means they follow a set of rules, and are orderly, but will use loop holes to play the system.
Stranger things is an insult. They need to make their own shvt not ripoff everything from my entire upbringing. Demogorgon isn't for a bunch of stupid ass little kids pretending they have powers. Worse they made Demogorgon into some pansy little trash mobs. Please...as a licensed DM and 16 year employee at TSR..... don't ever give that trash ripoff show credit for stealing from dungeons and dragons. They didn't even pilfer correctly. They deserve zero credit.
Not Kiarannslee!😭 Kiaran-sah-lee = Kiaransalee Great video!
9:15 I've always heard "neh-ROOL," but I can't vouch for it beyond that.
Finally some one talks about this place. There’s something fascinating about Pluton being the very bottom of the multiverse. The antipode of Amoria of Elysium.
I love that you talked about all of the comamnders of asmo.
Wow. As a Greek I feel very proud and honored that my culture has influenced so much this game!
Another banger
Hades is horrifying. It seems like the worst place imaginable. One thing I don't understand is how do you not want to go to a place? Do you fake a destination, maybe pretend you're going to a 7/11, and that will take you to the place you really wanted to go? I very much enjoyed this.
Why are these Yugoloths you keep speaking of? You mean the Daemons.
"Yugoloths" sounds cooler, more mythologically accurate and more convenient to say than "Daemons". You aren't losing the battle against religious freaks of 80s by using the better option, get over it
@@georgeuferov1497 What do you mean 'religious freaks'? I'm Catholic, and I prefer the 'demon, devil, Daemon' naming theme for fiends.
@@XX-sp3tt words "tanar'ri", "baatezu", "yugoloth" and "aasimon" appeared during Satanic Panic
Pluton, the dead bottom end of the Realms. The final despair and home of loss and evil.
Woooooo!
Don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or not but I dislike having real world pantheons in D&D. Toril is not supposed to be Earth. Just sticking in historical deities with basically no alterations feels very uninspired. It makes the setting seem less like its own unique universe with its own history, cosmology, and lore.
To be fair, they are a little different. Aeaea is the home of Circe not Hecate. But ya, they’re very similar to their Greek counterparts. But that was the vibe of Planescape, it wasn’t the outer planes for one setting, it’s the outer planes for all the settings. And the Greek Pantheon is worshipped in some of those crystal spheres. That, and Earth is canon in D&D so it makes sense.
I think that it's a holdover from 1st edition's Deities and Demigods core book, which was almost entirely real-world deities, but did have them all existing in more-or-less the Great Wheel planar cosmology. So when Planescape expanded on that, they didn't want to throw all of those deities away.
>Toril is not supposed to be Earth And Planescape is not supposed to be about Toril. It is only one of infinite worlds But on principle I agree, real-world deities feel a bit weird. However, remember that DnD authors prioritise players' ability to understand the lore over having internal consistency. That's the reason why vampires have too many weaknesses for no reason, for example
I like to imagine the outer realms as an ideological space that forms itself out of the beliefs of the multiverse's denizens. The combination of pre-existing mythology with the mythologies of different worlds is one of the aspects of planescape that I find most interesting.
Funny thing about Cegilune; she is both a Godess and a Night Hag, and noone really knows her origin. My theory is that she IS Hecate, but uses this disguise for her scheming and more foul Hag rituals. Cegilune is a lunar godess too, after all. Two gods with very similar portfolio's on one plane? Seems suspicious. Also, Night Hags are very much favored by Devils, as one had an Archduchess title even, before nepotism claimed her. So Hecate having realms in the Hells would fit a secret Night Hag God-Queen. Personally, I like to see Hecate/Cegilune as the Neutral Evil Magic Godess counterpart to Mystra's Neutral Good, and even have a headcannon where the shard of Celune that struc Shar and created Mystra, also created Hecate within the shadow of this new Godess. Shar and Selune draw inspiration from Nyx and Selene, the Godesses of the Night and Moon respectively from the Greek Pantheon. I could go on about this deep, interconnected rabid-hole born from decades of writing, edition changes/overhauls to the lore and straight up plotholes, but when it comes to Cegilune, this is pretty much all I have landed on. There is supossedly also a link between Cegilune and the Queen of Air and Darkness, but I am not done with that puzzle yet-
Wow, this is an amazing theory with lots of lore to back it up. Fantastic work!
Great video! Can't wait to see which plane you do next, looking forward to learning about Carceri and Arborea. Would also be interested in some of the changing lore on Dragons in DnD!
