An attempt to educate new disc golfers about common mistakes we all make as we start to want more distance out of our backhand. My goal is to gather basic ideas learned from other content creators/coaches and put them in an even more condensed form that will be more accessible to newer players. The backhand throw is the most complex motion I've come across as a movement coach and putting in a little work to understand the mechanics will go a long way to avoiding common mistakes many of us deal with for years before we even know there is an easier way to get distance and accuracy.

Question, I am introducing two friends to disc golf for the first time this week, They are both ball golfers, what videos could I watch of yours to help me relate golf mechanics to disc golf?
Honestly, I would just get them out throwing and having fun before working on mechanics much. Unless they WANT to learn mechanics, then thats awesome and go for it! I would start here: ua-cam.com/video/ZHtn4EF-Nv0/v-deo.htmlsi=MA_HgJTdZnYNKPSJ

Continuing to make my way through your content!
Thanks! Yea. Its a pretty ambiguous phrase until someone actually explains it.
Do u think there’s actually any benefit to beat in discs? I understand a beat in stable disc will fly a lot farther than out of the box, but I see so many people talking about beating in understable discs as if it’s some magic secret sauce to distance or something. Like “yeah bro I lost my super beat in destroyer and nothing else in my bag flies as far” I’m somewhat new so I could be completely wrong. But Is there actually any truth behind that or is that pretty much BS.
@@Chillydall02 both really. There is truth and some BS. Personally I have spent alot of time and money trying to find a disc in champion type premium plastic that flies like a beat in dx teebird. A new dynasty is close, but not quite the same. The problem as I see it is that premium plastics really arent as understable as the flight numbers suggest. (Esp if your nose angle is positive). So beating them in Is the only way to make them fly understable unless you have a ton of arm speed to over drive them well.
Thanks, super interesting coming from ball golf where equipment tends to be stable/consistent until you lose it
@@aslan-og yea. Ball golf will get alot more interesting the day they start using irregular shaped balls! All of your shot shaping comes from trajectory and spin. In my limited understanding.

Just started watching your videos. What you do that I love is that you explain the PURPOSE of things (but not in a way that's over my head). What is the action, why are we doing it, what do you need to do to cause the action, what should the end result be if it goes according to plan, and what are some common misconceptions and misfires. THAT is the kind of coaching that is going to click for so many people. If I don't know WHY I'm doing something, it's a lot harder for me to execute it because my brain wants to trust it but my body can't. I hope more and more coaches break down the PURPOSE of drills and how to apply them to a throw (be that literally or through feeling a sensation related to the drill).
Thank you so much for saying that. That is exactly what I'm trying to do. I really want to help people understand what they are doing and why. Otherwise so much can go wrong and people are unable to self coach effectively.
Amazing! What's crazy is this has made me a better putter too. I start dynamic rocking back and forth and my putting has gotten a lot more fluid. Although putting feels more like a rock forward to the basket. On drives and stand stills the bent knee to extension also is a big light bulb, rocking weight on toes back and forth and then sinking the front heel in once weight is on the front foot while extending the leg and sending the disc out of the pocket.
Hey I sent that vid to Nick, also posted it on DGCR many times. I like the "HOW KYLE BERKSHIRE uses the GROUND. With Dr Scott Lynn BE BETTER GOLF" vid a little more.

@@user-kv5my3xy1l awesome! What clicked?
@@_TDG The horizontal shoulder collapse demonstration. That's exactly what I do and I'd never thought of it or seen it properly illustrated.
How does a disk being beat up affect the flight making it more understable? Is it because the defects are affecting the down drafts from the bottom portion of the disk? I would definitely like to see shot shape details as well. Thanks for the great explanations.
Scuffs on the edge of the disc increases turbulent flow over the top of the disc which increases lift, increasing understability. It's the same reason that a more grippy plastic is usually more understable than a slick one, because surface turbulence is higher the more grippy the plastic is.
Good question and good topic. I hope he can talk about this as well.
@@aslan-og ua-cam.com/video/oihLpqMBa38/v-deo.htmlsi=U6JNr2NglnBIU7hi New video answer is up! A few answers: general damage makes the disc micro wobble more, which decreases gyroscopic stability. And most higher speed discs get the outside edge bent downwards from impacts with trees and such, which makes more air go over the top = more understable. And yes wear specifically on the bottom rim can reduce overstability.
Good Job! Thanks

Hello..been watching for awhile and I have decided to get lessons from you if available?
Help please, I'm on my toes but when I coil the back foot is still twisting and my shoe sole keeps getting holes near my big toe. Can it be too much stagger?
Slow down your walk up speed. Your body weight is progressing forward too fast, thats what causes the rear foot to spin out.
Yeah dude, I reallty appreciate this coaching and you giving a glimpse behind the curtain. Some really solid advice here. He does something that I do and plants into his last step too much on his toe which makes makes his brace soft. I get hitting that last step more on the front of your foot but I would say he's too much on his toe to make his brace stable. I think that makes his whole leg weak and lends to collapsing. Be interested on your thoughts there. Great video!
I'm not sure what you mean.... He plants toe to heel and pivots on the heel. What do you not like about it?
@_TDG so when I come in heavy on the toe in my plant, my brace is softer. I need to come down on much more of my foot to get a full solid plant. Go watch Simon's slo mo. He comes down on almost the whole inside of his foot. Yeah, his tow technically hits first, but he has a much less pronounced toe to heel shift in his plant. I think that is pretty consistent with the pros. Maybe it's not a huge deal, but I feel a difference in my throw.
@@discsmd i think what simon does is the more advanced maneuver… a toe to heel rock sets you up better to learn how to use your front leg well by getting all the weight into the heel so the ankle stabilizers are mostly not super taxed in the kinetic chain. What simon does works. But he already knows how to use his front leg. While we are still learning to brace well a toe heel rock works better for most.
@@discsmd Exacly how i also feel. feels a bit soft. simon stompes.
So I JUST figured out my mental que to get to a deep pocket. I realized that I’m not actually “pulling through” to that right peck, I’m pulling TO the right peck. I stood still with a reach back and just repeatedly pulled the disc to a deep pocket, and it’s not a front to back motion, you pull straight towards your body. Then I incorporated my torso rotation and started pulling to a deep pocket and it all but forces you to get the rest of your body into the correct position. Does any of that make sense? It’s kinda hard to explain with words. I’m sure you and several other coaches have explained it this way before too, but for whatever reason it just clicked with me.
Thats great! Im cautious of activating the bicep, but other longer throwers arent, but if its working its working! I do think having a stop point to the impulse on the disc can be a helpful cue for some.
@@_TDG it’s not really a bicep activation and more tricep, the forearm stays pretty loose and just follows the hinge of the elbow. It’s more of a mental cue that I had to tell myself because I’m so prone to rounding. It feels right tho, and it sounds like I am cracking a whip with my mids and putters now. Getting a lot more distance with them both, but it has not translated to my drivers just yet, but I have just moved to this, this week. Thanks for all your videos and help btw.
@@jaswan79 ok good! Then yes thats perfect. Just drive the elbow so that the disc comes into the chest.
Love this. Thank you!
You are welcome.
I wear a shirt that has adidas stripes going down the arms that helps us review my field work videos!
Sure! That could help.
I feel personally attacked
Ha! Which one is the biggest issue for you?
@@_TDG I collapse the pocket every single time. My shoulders start rotating before my arm goes through. I will use these drills you showed 👍
@@ToddsDiscGolf Try the trebuchet drill. Should help your shoulder understand how to drive the elbow to keep the pocket supported.
i think ODG teaches bad form and habits, its good as a very preliminary starter for beginners but if you want to throw far then the concepts that TDG and disc golf spin doctor provide are totally different than the overthrow videos and actually work
I think Josh’s box drill, twirly bird 1, and hula drill are some of the best ways to feel out some elements of the throw. So I wouldnt say he teaches bad habits. What major differences standout to you?
I have something that I have been thinking about and not sure if any UA-camr has talked about it. I know this has nothing to do with this video. It just got me thinking. Let's say that hypothetically a person has "perfect form". But their arm speed maxes out at 50-55 mph. What distance should that person expect to achieve when throwing flat (ignoring the elements)? 200ft? 300ft? 400ft? If a person is caped by arm speed, is far distance (say 400ft ish) really achievable even with "perfect form"? Or is the only way a person with "perfect form" can throw 400ish foot, they have to be able to achieve an arm speed of 60-70 mph. I love all your videos Trebuchet! Very helpful.
Thanks! Pretty sure good form is what gets you good arm speed. All physics cares about is disc speed and spin and release angles… physics doesnt care about form, if that makes sense. So bad form with 60mph release is the same as good form with a 60mph release as far as distance goes…But I guess bad form would be less consistent (and require more effort / injury potential)
So what about rocking on the back heel but afterwards initiating a good counter weight with the back leg? I think Will S. Does this. Is initiating a strong counter weight of the back leg alone enough to avoid power leakage?
Its fine if the heel comes down as long as the weight shift is doing what we want. There are a handful of pros that will drop the x heel but then still move off that leg really well. Its beginners that are usually better served by just not putting the heel down since it tends to create issues. Dropping the heel can be a good way to help load the rear hip better, but you have to kinda know what youre doing.
I dont think counterweighting fixes heel drop. I think the heel drop is undone by the weight / pressure shift being right. Rather than by the real leg CW thing.
But what if my long leg is a peg leg..
Then I would suggest you may need a longer prosthetic specifically for disc golf. Alternatively you could bend your rear knee even more.
@@_TDG ok thanks just wondering cuz I'm new to disc golf and also a pirate at the same time.

I've been throwing for about 6 years and have been watching videos (tournaments and instructional) for about 3. This video is the first one that I have seen, or remember seeing, that has mentioned that trebuchet drill. I have seen videos where trebuchets are mentioned, but never actually putting the off-arm on the throwing arm to lock in the feeling. It's almost 2200hrs right now, but when tomorrow comes, I am trying this out with a disc. Thank you for the video. Edit-a word.
Awesome! Yea I made that one up... hope it helps!
@_TDG Well, almost everyone since I started watching has said, "Don't throw with your arm." So I've been mistakingly letting my shoulder collaps because I was trying to remove my arm from the occasion. I took the limp noodle analogy to the MAX. But with bracing the elbow and then using the off arm to push the elbow through, I can really understand how I can use it for the throw without 'just' yanking my arm.
@@Christopher-hh8iq yep. Loose is good bit you still need to support and drive the elbow forward.
I have horizontal collapse You simplify so perfect Now I hope I can go put it into action, Thank You very much
Thank you! Good luck!
ive struggled a lot with tipping my torso and head backwards during extension and then almost flinging my upper weight (head first) over the brace (feels powerful I suppose). I'm still trying to correct this with a straight spine coil, but it leads to a super high reachback that has the elbow driving down into the "elbow orientation" bucket. All sorts of nose issues ensue. I think this is from airbouncing in Ultimate, which has been the hardest thing for me to fix. Feels like I have to choose between RPM's and nose angle
Yea if you have a swing plane issue that gets corrected with a swing plane bandaid change then it can be super hard to decouple the two long enough to make a positive change. I worked with a guy that struggled because when he threw with a decent swing plane the disc would come out 20 degrees nose down. Because his launch was 20 degrees up so it 'evened out'. But when you fix one issue the other part of your muscle memory screws everything up. So you end up having to either throw horribly for a while and trusting that the other issue can get sorted OR fix two issues at once, which is hard. Hop on the Patreon and we'll get you sorted out!
@@_TDG just joined :D
why was this recommended to me?
Dont ask me, ask the Algorithmic Overlords... Is that minecraft modded CounterStrike in some of you videos???
LOVE the trebuchet drill! Did it for hours I bet. Clint's swirly bird video hasn't clicked with me yet, but holding the disc upside down for the twirly bird really does help the mind connect. Great stuff as always. Thanks!
Yea Swirly is tough, there is ALOT going on there. I see it as a playground to work on timing... but you still have to know what you are going for and what it feels like when its right.
I’ve become a believer in the briefcase! Ironically, even though the swing plane is technically more complex, I have found that my body autocorrects at the hit. Maybe I’m just weird. 🙂 Strangely, if I attempt to setup on the simple swing plane, my body does weird stuff during the throw. If I focus on pointing the elbow at the target (briefcase), then my body seems to naturally get it right.
I think thats reasonably common. Yea reducing tension in the beginning of the throw can be really important, I think thats kinda what makes it work for you...
Nice! Having precise language like this is super helpful. I hope it catches on elsewhere, and everyone is speaking the same, clear and concise language when describing different issues in the throw. 🤞
Bro, you're rounding! ; ) yea, here's hoping!
I feel #3 happens to me but when I try to throw flat/not hyzer. Would that be possible?
Sure. when you throw hyzer hopefully everything is tilted on hyzer: hips and shoulders and arm. When you throw flat you may have everything flat(er) which is not great mechanically... you can still throw flat if you want to, but dont expect your brace to be as strong or as able to contain momentum. When people throw flat there generally tends to be less space for the disc, which kinda creates problems like rounding... try to find a way to keep the space you have on a hyzer when you do a flat throw...
@@_TDG thank you!
Thank you! I definitely am doing the first one. I guess one problem is I have been doing the briefcase , but actually still reaching back and flattening the disc there, instead of pulling it through while still in briefcase mode. Also, feel like I open my wrist up when I reach back. I really need to work through this.
Try just keeping the disc on the intended release plane the whole time. Pocket, reachback, pocket, release. Should simplify things while you are building the muscle memory.
I’m definitely the last one.
That tracks. I dont think I was even aware of that pattern back when we worked together. Hows your throw doing?
Third category for me when I mess up.
Yep that one is pretty common. Really dont see alot of other coaches talking about it. So its not in the common knowledge yet.
