I always found it fitting Ace Combat calls it a fighter but gives it almost exclusively air to ground weaponry in most titles. The F-16 historically was sold as a light dogfighter, but has spent most of it's life flying straight and level loaded with bombs while heavier fighters provide top cover.

I love this series, I’d love to see a cockpit view comparison between the models and the games.

So I'm likely to begin my own look at this game soon, though I'll be covering the ps2 version since it's what I grew up with. After beating the game again after nearly 2 decades of not playing it I can firmly say the game is good for what it is. The campaign really isn't long and the hotswap mechanic keeps things fresh enough along with the huge variety of level types that I don't think it really gets boring. Some of your frustrations as well seem to be related particularly to the 360 version because I never had issues with enemies shooting through cover on the ps2 version. The machine gun spam is also far less of an issue, likely because due to that generations technical limitations the AI is likely dumber. In the same vain, there are also far fewer enemies and allies so the meat grinders are less pronounced. The 5 minute timer on the last levels definitely going to make you clench your cheeks but it's not TOO terrible when you account for the significantly reduced enemy counts. Now, my gripes with the game tend to come from the fact you don't have every class in every level exactly like you said. The controls as well are...questionable. What's bizarre is on the ps2 version the shotgun is the only gun with the issue you mentioned, the others handle okayish. It's definitely not as bad of aim issues as games like Medal of Honor Rising Sun but in an FPS the one thing you should perfect is the shooting. Good review though, and I'll definitely take notes for my own.

Still, F-4X is considered underrated Phantom variant. I wish AC8 replace F-4E for F-4X as a new starter aircraft.

I was always under the impression that the Mitsubishi F-2A isn't a direct variant of the F-16. The F-2A was basically just a clone of the F-16 with a large amount of modifications throughout to suit the Japan Air self-defence force. So it makes complete sense for it to not be included in this video. It's essentially the multirole jet aircraft equivalent of copying your friend's homework but changing it a little to make it your own.

I was always annoyed that the F-4 was not available for the carrier missions in AC5. Someone didn’t do their homework, or I guess even play AC4?

I will always be kinda surprised the F-16 appears as a low tier option in AC games, irl it's widely regarded as one of the best and most successful 4th generation jet fighters. Also, I know the servers closed and the game is unaccessible nowadays, but wasn't the Block 60 variant also in Infinity?

Ah, the poor F-16 family got done so dirty in Infinity, with F-16XL being the only serviceable variant. F-16C was very much a newbie trap with bottom-cst and bad weapons (And got expensive very fast until prices got heavily slashed-no compensation for those already invested 😭), but it did get Silber skin as its silber lining. F-16F also suffered from weak Sp.W in a low-cst multirole... and I honestly can't remember ever running into other F-16F users during my entire playtime. F-16C's SP variants were usually just F-16C but better, with exception being -PJ-, which came with ludicrous maneuverability that let it easily shrug off missiles no matter how tightly they homed in. It wasn't unusual for PJ users to survive an entire match without getting shot down. F-16F's only SP variant -Desert Rock- came with enormous HVAA capacity due to developer oversight where it kept the original's 4AGM ammo count. Plus its just high enough cst made it much more capable multirole over the base model. I used to think the conformal fuel tanks looked too goofy to use back in AC5 despite the massive stat improvements, but now I'm very much in love of B60 and Super Kai because of them! They add aesthetics completely unique to their form, like how paint schemes conform to the aircraft shapes like a canvas.

Gradually realizing with hindsight that I may find rockets to be bad in a number of titles only because AC6 was the first one I played extensively and it took me a long time to play the games that released around it.

The F-16 IRL was basically a tech demo for fly-by-wire control systems that so impressed the USAF that they just bought the demo and pressed it into service. Source: am ex-USAF aircraft mechanic.

Imo Ace Combat infinity had the best multiplayer of the franchise. I would love to have it back, or to have another AC game with the same multiplayer style. So sad they went for pvp on AC7.

Just finished probably my 20th or so playthrough of this game, already doing the next one on Ace difficulty. Did the grind to unlock every plane, and is the most satisfying game of the series to play. Choppers death is still one of the biggest tearjerking events in gaming to me, alongside losing Sgt Maj Johnson in Halo 3 and Cortana in Halo 4. It still enrages me seeing him plunge into the stadium in Journey Home. Between Ace Combat and Halo, I grew to love campaigns with emotional and deep stories.

I don't know why but I always prefer to play PSP version more,the graphic and sound may not good as PS2 ver, but I like that it got less traffic in there so it give me more time to forcus on race and it got extra tracks that PS2 ver doesn't has so there that that.I not really like crash mode and like race mode more.

As much as I wouldn't mind a remaster, you pretty much spelled out why I'd be concerned about buying it full price. That and, with SBMM I literally enjoyed MW 2019 and then proceeded to not enjoy it long term because the multiplayer constant sweating soured things for both me and a friend after a while. The bot multiplayer you're showcasing is 100% my cup of tea, bots underrated in 2024. The... Good bots not, bots for cheating or player profit.

Having seen images of the game without knowing what console it was, it honestly looked more like a PS4 game it looks amazing as a PS3 title. It is something I did miss out on, not having any real Playstation after the PS2 until long after the game shutdown. Looks interesting, and I've been through more painful F2P experiences and still enjoyed them so it would've probably been a blast.

I'm surprised you didn't have a complaint about the ugly vehicles. Those new cars made for Dominator might be some of the worst fictional car designs I've ever seen in a game. Only a few of them are decent, like the American Super and Drift Classic.

I've been playing Ace Combat games since 97, my first one being the original Air Combat for the PS1. Every game has been an emotional journey through the music. Also a giant fortress/plane. Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies will forever be my favorite. The transition from a simple arcade game to a real story for Ace Combat games started with Ace Combat 4.
