    This one was my favorite out of the whole series. Nothing has ever come close to it. I miss having the squadron mechanics and sticking to a group of characters, hopefully those things will return in the next AC game.

    • @ThunderousFolf
      @ThunderousFolf  6 місяців тому +2

      I hope something like that makes a return in either the next Ace Combat game or in another entry later down the line too. Sticking with the same group allows for more connections and bonds to form, which could play a crucial role in the story like it did here in 5.

    • @Avionixty
      @Avionixty Місяць тому +1

      I hope they bring the squadron control mechanics back as well. I’ve only played ac7, and it feels like I’m flying alone all the time. AC8 is in production as I know, maybe we’ll get some trailers in 2025

    • @Karter_Blackpaw
      @Karter_Blackpaw Місяць тому

      @@Avionixty It really did. You keep swapping out the entire group every few missions that I cannot remember anybody. Plus since the AI didn't really want to attack targets like in 5/Zero, it really feels like it's only you and radio chatter.

    People love comparing and ranking each of the "Golden Trio" against each other, but they had completely different gameplay and stories to tell us. They're wonderful each of their own right. Fantastic soundtracks, compelling storylines and refreshing mechanics that build off of previous titles, even if not perfectly, make this such a weighty point in the franchise.
    Hell, even if it wasnt as good and isn't still around, I still have nostalgia for Infinity

    This was not only my first AC game, but one of the first video games I've ever played. It is still one of my favorite stories of all time. Not just with video games, but including movies, shows and books too. The music is so good I bought the score and still listen to it almost 20 years later. Heck, now I'm a dad and my 2-year-old loves this music too! I got a little emotional at the end of this video.. I'm not gonna lie. ThunderousFolf, you captured the spirit of the story dead on. Looking forward to seeing you earn more than 2.7k subscribers!

    Great review of AC5!! But one minor detail I have to point out is an aircraft at 32:47-32:57, the mentioning of "F-16s" flyby. Correction is that those were actually "Mitsubishi F-2s", a derivative of the F-16. You can tell by the color of the jet "Maritime Blue w/White Nose". Overall you did a great job, of reviewing this treasured game for us Ace Combat Fans!!

    My name (which i have used since this games release) may indicate my love of AC5

    It's been ages since I last played this game as I got it when it first came out in 2004 as a kid. I don't have my PS2 anymore either, but watching this retrospective brought back the memories I had and the emotions this game evoked almost as if I was playing it again for the first time. Thank you for that. It's still one of my all time favorite games period, both as an aviation game and a game in general.
    I"m glad you are getting to enjoy this as well. Keep on flying!

    As a non english-speaking teen, I was always confused about this Chopper guy that never piloted a helicopter.
    I loved AC5 growing up, I spent so much time flying about unlocking planes and trying to perfect missions. And as the game with probably the most content of the series, there was always something fun to try out. Not to mention the amount of good soundtrack this game had almost capped the memory of my poor mp4 device.
    Good memories of sitting at the back of the school wagon, listening to Ice Cage and daydreaming looking outside the window.
    ps.: Journey Home sits in my heart close to Snake Eater, as one of the most beautifully composed songs of the PS2 era.

    Ace Combat has been home to many of my "first" experiences.
    Playing as Phoenix was the first time I've ever felt like a true badass ace pilot, being in the shoes of a legendary mercenary who conquers wars like it's nothing.
    The tale of Yellow 13 was one of the first two stories to give me existential sadness (the other being Explorers of Sky).
    The demise of Chopper and the wings of unity against Gründer were the first tears I've shed in a game out of grief and joy respectively.
    The Stage of Apocalypse was the first time I've ever dropped my jaw in sheer horror of what I just witnessed and the last battle against my wingman was the final boss that made me appreciate final bosses.

    Funny enough. In the last mission, at the part when you have to destroy the SOLG, you can fly to the very back of it and go down the long tunnel like tube. Once you’ve flown down the tube, you can destroy a control system on the other end and destroy the SOLG without shooting panels and weak points and all that

    As the complete teeaboo I used to be (and still now, besides also an Aussieboo), I finished this game for the first time with the Tornado F3.
    Also, I headcanon only Wardog to be an F-14 squadron (except for Operation Supercircus/The Journey Home, using 2 Su-47s and 2 MiG 1.44s, both stolen from Yuktobania), while Razgriz is an F-35 squadron. Razgriz only uses the F-14 in the Battle of Sudentor (ACES) and Operation Arcadia (The Unsung War) - the Tomcats don’t even have the Razgriz liveries (rather the original Wardog liveries, but using Razgriz’s IFFs).

    BTW, talking about the original graphics, you only get that "fuzzy" look if you're using a PS2 coaxial adapter, when you had to change the channel to channel 3 or 4 I think. The AV composite cables (red, yellow, white) should be slightly more clearer than that.

    AC5 was by far my favorite in the series. I replay it every couple of years. I'm not sure how much of it was the right time/place in my life, but for me it stands out as the defining game of the series. I liked 4 and 6, really enjoyed 7 and 0, and can appreciate 2 (I've never played 1 or 3. I need to change that). I just love 5. Razgriz. Gives me a little chill down my spine to just think about it.

    As a primary aviator in War Thunder I feel that rant in my soul lol 😂
    But seriously great retrospective on the game. ACE5 will forever hold the place in my heart as one of the best game I ever play. All that moment during the game the panic fight for survival during navel blockade and first flight, the horror of watching the rookie get short down by burst missle, the nail bitting tenssion of defending space port and Nagase rescue, the grief and rage of loosing Chopper or the tears of joy when Yuktabonia and Osea joint forced in Sea of chaos and ACES.
    As a wise man once said "Ace Combat is not just a game but an ***Experience***"

    Played 04, 5, and Zero in succession as a kid. Was too young when I started to actually complete them until I could get over my nerves about flying through the tunnels lmao (imagine playing through 04 up until Megalith over and over (until finally trying to scrape by with the small wingspan of the F-5 XD)). 5 definitely struck the biggest emotional chord with me of the lot.

    Ace Combat 5 was the last of the PS2 Trilogy I picked up. I bought it a couple weeks ago and while i do enjoy it, i find that it has some glaring issues. The fixed special weapons are a downgrade from 4 and later games, and the Tech Tree hybrid unlock system while fun to grind can be annoying as I feel there's almost no incentive to play some of the variations from the A10, TND, or A6E. The only reason to do so is to unlock the X02 (which I'm still grinding for). And since you mention enemy AI bullshit, during the final mission while i was fighting Grabacr and Ofnir, one of the Ofnir enemies dove straight down seemingly into the ocean which caused me to crash. Chuck that up to Belkan Witchcraft I guess. Also the mission Four Horsemen annoyed the hell out of me as there would be times right as we were getting ready to destroy the radar, Nagase would basically pull a "Whoops my bad abort!" Which caused me to fail, and then when i had to retry the mission, I took my time thinking Nagase would do that again, only for that to not be the case and i would be too far from the radar to destroy it, causing me to fail the mission again. Despite some of my frustrations with the game that I've clearly expressed here, i still very much enjoy it. The story is very well written even more so since I played Zero before 5, which made it feel more like a sequel than Zero being a prequel. The Razgriz mythos is very fascinating and actually inspired me to create lore for a character in For Honor who shares the name. And I admittedly enjoy leveling up some of the planes I used to not care for trying out. Overall, Ace Combat 5 while probably my least favorite of the PS2 Trilogy is still an amazing game and one I've been enjoying since i bought it. Definitely looking forward to your retrospective on Zero.

    If the Grabacr and Ofnir Squadrons didn't get shoot down during the final mission before the SOLG enter the atmosphere they will suicide by blowing themselves up. I swear, I wasn't expecting so much drama and hate, loved it.

    This game is probably my third favorite of the series being behind Zero and 4, but it's still a great game none the less. The one scene that actually got the most in tears of joy was mission 27 ACES. The intro always gives me chills! I honestly wish they would remaster the PS2 trilogy for PC and modern systems because they are amazing games in their own right. Can't wait for your Zero video when it comes out.
