I adore the Steam Deck. I'm old enough to remember when hand held gaming meant having games that looked like the previous generation. Thankfully, with PC tech stagnating we're to a point where a game today can look amazing on a desktop and almost as good on a portable play device. It really is a great time to be a mobile gamer.

You mean two generations behind. It's the Switch that was only one generation behind in power, that's why it was impressive.

@@SogonD.ZunatsuOn the other hand, the screens were tiny, so it didn't matter that much. I bought a 2DS XL after the release of the Switch, because it was pocketable. Not even the Switch Light is pocketable. (and it wasn't released back then, so it was no option anyway... 😁)
I own a Switch and a Steam Deck and I love them, but they're completely different handhelds than the ones before.

I am at a point that I dont enjoy gaming as much as I used to. I just wanna rock back and enjoy the games that my pc can run. I watched countless videos about steam deck and already made a wishlist on steam (the games I would usually not play on my pc) and even watching these videos ignited something in me. I ordered one as well, cant wait to put my hands on it.

The Deck is my first step into PC gaming (I have been gaming since 1990 with the Game Boy) so long, long, long overdue stepping into the world of PC and Steam and oh my, it is wonderful.

You're doing it wrong. Just make the steamdeck do all thoe things. You can run switch games on it. You can stream the ps5 to it (also over the internet if you have unlimited data) and you can even stream you desktop to it. Thats the true endgame on the deck haha

The best thing about the verification system is that it's basically just a suggestion as even some "unsupported" games tend to either just work or need a little tinkering to get it working. Though it's best to look at proton db to make sure that a game works well on the Steam Deck, which it's useful for Linux gaming in general. Of course you're mileage may vary when stepping out of the Steam Deck's comfort zone

  • @SogonD.Zunatsu

The Deck is perfectly apt for strategy games. You just need to play around with Steam Input which is incredbly deep. Assign the whole screen as a mouse region to one of the trackpad, makes it completely viable and not only for RTSs but also menu heavy games.

I have one and some friends have been contemplating getting one cause they’re on sale rn. One of them is getting an ROG ally, so it’ll be nice to see how that compares.
I really am satisfied with the steam deck with all the emulation and modding support that the community has made for it. It almost feels official once you have it all set up. Being able to hook it up to the tv and play any game you want is great. Especially with the dock and a bunch of controllers. It’s like having a magic library of games. I’d say it’s actually going to end up saving space for me too since I can put all my old consoles away and just have the steam deck in their place.

    • @morid0
      @morid0 Місяць тому +1

I've got both the OG steam deck and Asus rog ally both devices are amazing, if I could only pick one I would keep the steam deck, out of the box is just a much more smooth experience, it's a tough call tough since I love the 1080p resolution plus a bit more power and better sound from the ally but battery is abysmal on the OG model, new refresh rog ally x seems like it's going to be amazing but also more expensive than a steam deck. So basically when I'm in the mood for indie games and emulation I pick up my steam deck since I don't have to worry to be plugged, and rog ally just keep it plugged and on 30 watt tdp to play more demanding games like Forza horizon etc.

I used to own a GPD WIN3 that was essentially the same thing but win-10 operated, and now got a deck too. I have to say, this device has effectively destroyed the myth console players have that "you need a $1200 pro gamer race PC to play anything on par with my PS5/Xbox and also a PhD in computer software engineering to make sense of it". PC gaming is wholly accessible, it's not a matter of if or when, it's now a matter of how long it takes the myth to wither away now. You're correct on all your points.

Just awaiting a 1TB card as I have maxxed out. Got NES to Switch and all those inbetween. To be fair most games work in SteamOS these days, even "unsupported" ones. Proton has been improving at such a rate that the verification program can't keep up. The only 2 games that haven't worked for me required me to disable esync and fsync in proton. That sounds difficult, but you basically just add a command in the properties of the specific game. it basically takes 10 seconds to do, and you only need to do it once.

I have a high end gaming desktop, self built, with a 49" super-wide OLED Monitor and I honestly use my steam deck OLED more than it now. That being said I do often stream from my desktop to my steam deck when I'm at home and in some other room than where my desktop is. I stream to it mostly when it's docked to a TV, if I'm going mobile, I generally just run it locally right on deck itself and I have to say, I love the damn thing. I have trust in Valve as a company(more than others anyway) so my library is almost totally steam exclusive anyway so it's a perfect fit for me. Thank you Valve for keeping us PC gamers going for a couple decades now!

I'm genuinely debating whether or not I need this in my life or should I wait for the next generation. (PC gamer, never owned a handheld (not a real one anyway) and I rarely play with joysticks) I catch myself more and more often not playing, cuz I want to lay down after a long workday lol.

Although not a handheld gamer myself, I think it depends on what games you play the most. If you love indie games, singleplayer or want to revisit some classics from previous generations, then I think SD is the best bang for a buck, especially at surrent sale. But if you're a competitive player, use mostly mousa and keyboard and play multiplayer games with anticheat which might not be supported on the Linux device, then I don't know.

I was in the same boat. Used a gamesir controller for a while to stream steam games to my phone. Tried out a smaller device for dedicated gaming and retro play a la the retroid pocket 4 pro.. nice device just a bit too small and not nearly as capable. Order the 64gb steam deck yesterday and a 512gb SSD for only $37 on Amazon. My son plays my PC quite a bit so I'm always sharing time or waiting til the evening and like you said.. id rather just play in bed. The RP4 pro while fine, only has a 4.7 in screen and native play vs streaming is always better + quick resume. We shall see.

I just got a Deck recently after following it since release. I thought I would be using it for emulation primarily, but somehow I ended up turning it into my remote play device for PS5 and my desktop. When you're streaming games, you get the full power of the streamed machine and the Deck barely needs any power, so the battery life is amazing. Input lag is perfectly fine too. And I love accessing my desktop PC anywhere, it's so convenient. When I don't have net access, I just play indie games that have been in my backlog.

I've had the Asus ROG Ally, GPD WIN Max 2 and currently own the Lenovo Legion Go and the OG Steam Deck LCD. Of all of those systems, I constantly come back to the Steam Deck because of the comfort, NO WINDOWS 11 jank and most important of all: the Sleep/Quick Resume function which none of the Windows PC handhelds have. The ease of use, exceptional customer service of Valve and just the simple fact that it just "works" is what makes the Steam Deck numero uno.

I'm nearly 2 years with mine - and it is the best gaming system I have purchased since the Gamecube. I have a decent gaming PC that see almost no use since I got the Deck.
As a predominantly PC gamer since the early nineties - the biggest joy has been playing modded versions of my favourite games from the 90s. Playing through Deus Ex: Revision with all the extras like Project Helios Texture Pack was an amazing experience made possible in handheld mode thanks to the track pads. Fallout A Tale of Two Wastelands was an incredible experience on the deck - as are a handful of GZDoom mods like Blade of Agony.
Outside of a handful of titles - the Deck has been able to run not just the Verified and Playable titles on the store, but nearly anything I have thrown at it including the titles marked unknown as well as titles from my GOG and Epic accounts and even older Disc Based games in my collection like The Simpsons Hit and Run.
A Deck2 will be an instant buy for me in the future - and I hope to one day see a Steam Controller 2 that has parity with the Deck controls so that I can play a game like Deus Ex on the big screen with no issues.

I was thinking. In games were the Steam Deck utilize 20-25W all the time. Limit the FPS, if not much changes, limit the TDP. In most cases those games/game engines run logic on a per-tick basis instead of per-frame. Hence eating up all the resources they can get hold of, even though they don't need the power. (a good example of this is Cyberpunk) Also, the Steam Deck offers most Performance/watt at 3-10W after that you get very little extra performance for the power you are pushing into the system. So when playing portably, I would make a rule that you should lock the TDP to 8-10W and adjust the settings towards that target. that way you will get 2.5-3h in demanding games, without much loss to performance/visual quality

The Deck's 4 back grip buttons means you can assign all 4 face buttons to them so you needn't ever take your thumb off the right camera stick. Then you can assign the capacitive touch analog sticks to activate gyro pitch/yaw steering. So there's more added immersion to the controls that's not possible on Switch. It's the better way to "play" the game.

I definitely respect what Steam Deck did to handheld community on PC side, but I still don't know if I want one. At this point in time, the hardware itself feels kinda absolete for any more demanding titles and Linux still has it's limitations like anti-cheat compatibility for example. Not to mention I don't really mind any quirks of Windows - I never was a part of console crowd as a kid and that system was pretty much all I ever used for gaming. And just because of that, I don't own a library of console games for emulation.
On the other hand though, it's DIRT CHEAP. Especially LCD one that's on sale right now. I'm very impressed with ROG Ally X for example, but at the same time I feel like I could just throw extra 100 bucks and get a budget gaming laptop with RTX4060. Well, qt least Legion GO and OG Ally are weay cheaper now, too.
Edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention that I have a huge backlog of games on Epic, Ubisoft Connect and EA Desktop. Aannnddd I play mostly multiplayer games, especially shooters.
I have one question though - have you, by any chance, tried using Lossless Scaling on the Deck? Does it actually work? I use it on my 7 years old laptop and it's doing wonders! Currently running God of War on Ultra with 120 frames!

You have to be very clear about what you use the deck for, let’s be real it can not replace your desktop PC if you’re playing multiplayer shooters and AAA titles due to small screen and pathetic battery life, the same goes for ROG Ally. However for retro emulation, indie game and backlog clearing (most of it will be indie games) it does a fantastic job and for the current sale price on the LCD model nothing else can come close. It is also a beast when it comes to streaming since the video decoding latency is close to non existent and streaming doesn’t drain your battery fast. With that being said the screen is 800p, but shouldn’t matter too much if your main use is to play indie games.
