Приєднався 15 січ 2013
This channel is mostly the home of "Miniature Dork Universe" which covers the area of 12 to 15mm historical wargaming miniatures and terrain relating to the Second World War. Many of the modelling and terrain tips are relevant to all scales and historic eras, however. The content is a little bent and off the wall, so fortify yourself! There are also some camping videos and videos of my band, Existench.

In this video I describe a method that allows you to base artillery and easily get the groundwork and colour consistent around the crews and under the gun. No time consuming and nail biting painting sessions or attempts to place the groundwork in hard to reach areas. For an example, I am basing a Japanese Type 94 37mm anti tank gun. Here I will provide a link to a PDF, for those interested, tha...

In this next brilliant session of Miniature Dork madness, 12mm US infantry figures will be painted and based up for the Mediterranean theatre, 1942-45. I'm painting them somewhat generically to be suitable for Tunisia, Sicily and Italy, though my main emphasis will be on the Salerno landings of September, 1943. This video covers the paints used, the basing and labelling of these Victrix offerin...

Paint Chipping Effects Gone Wild (The ultimate chipping method - leave it out!)

After years of chipping up my wargaming tanks, I've decided to bail on this step, based on what I saw looking at photos of real armoured vehicles. It initially bothered me a little when someone called out the paint chipping, but it turned out to be a constructi...

Can’t believe I waited 20 minutes to laugh at you fumbling and swearing over those b#stard tracks. Then you pull that spare track trick. Should’ve known better. Another excellent build and paint tutorial. And I enjoy the weird intro clips. I’m sure they’ll all be knocked out immediately in their first game, but after that, I hope you have fun with them. Happy New Year!
Hi everyone, I just realized that I left out the part where I mentioned the use of a 2B pencil to further highlight the metal tools and tracks.
Happy New Year pal! Awesome work as ever.
Same to you, fellow! Thanks for watching!
Rubber band tracks? Yikes! those are bad enough on scale modeling kits let alone 1/144 wargaming minis.
Ya! . . . and they were too small.
Amazing Video ! So much information. I find it immensely helpful. And its so well presented. The minis are stunning too.Cmon gimme a break man : D :D :D Its no joke. It IS a super channel ❤
Well, that's the kind of enthusiasm we love in the Miniature Dork Universe. May the fumes be with you!
I’m interested that you went with the Dragon kits. I’ve got a few but I got very frustrated with the short tracks. I also found the schurzen to be very fragile for gaming. They all look great painted though.
The tracks are a pain in the ass, for sure! I will show how I tackled that problem in the next video. I don't find the schurzen to be fragile at all, though. In fact, they seem pretty strong, as strong as the schurzen on the Victrix StuG III.
@ ah yes, I was thinking of the Pz IV schurzen which are Mildred on I think, but mare particularly the turret ones. I found that as soon as some ham fisted buffoon tried turning a turret they’d strip off. Not a problem with a StuG of course. I do like the idea of cannibalising parts though. Hadn’t thought of it and the Dragon kits are better suited since the wheels are separate.
Hi Dave..can I ask which wargame rules you use for your ww2 12mm/15mm
Hi, there, I am using my 12mm for 'O' Group and 15mm for Crossfire.
"The Look is the thing." Well done! We are very similar in our tastes. Why did you go with 12mm (as opposed to 15mm)?
I do both. I use 15mm for Crossfire, which is a company-sized game and 12mm for 'O' Group, which is a battalion-sized game. The smaller scale keeps the congestion down on the table for bigger games.
Kinderscheiße
I am curious as to why you dropped down from15mm to 12mm. And whether that has caused you to reconsidered your terrain collection too?
I'm still going to be working in 15mm. I just got distracted by shiny things! I first saw the Victrix 12mm figures a few years ago and decided to paint some up. I'll be working on some 12mm terrain for Italy and down the road there will be some tutorials on modifying resin terrain and making rubble. All the techniques can be used for various scales, though.
Love your intros😄 can't wait to see your tanks all done.
Thanks again. Becoming a total fanboy/sycophant. I'm doing the 12mm O-Group thing, but for Normandy.
The labels are on 4mm or 3/16" Evergreen plastic strips, cut to 4cm lengths.
Great job well done
Some absolute gems there. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely work pal. Welcome back. I hope you had a good sojourn.
Thank-you, fellow. It's always an awesome place to visit and all of my in-laws are next level awesome.
@@daviessuperchannel Excellent. I've been to Wroclaw previously, for a little independent music festival, and the town square looked to be historically pristine, until you notice all of the buildings had a photo of that they looked like in 1945; just rubble for the most. The rebuilding to reflect the prewar fabric is just amazing.
Superb painting and basing, excellent work!
Hey, recco for the wash, mix lamian medium in. I do 1/1/1 Agrax to Nuln to Lamian for my go to 6mm scale wash (although I have used it up to 28mm in the past before oils) since oil/enamels are a waste at that scale. It goes on much better and never frosts in my experience.
Thanks Battle Brother! I was considering the Lamian medium, I just can't get my hands on some, I need to order it. That's way easier than sacrificing an alpaca to Satan! Plus, I like alpacas, but just on a platonic level. Anyway, it's good to know of a success story with it and a mix recipe.
Good tip!
Wow you got a really good result at such a small scale, well done
One definitely needs magnification goggles. Otherwise, they are actually easier to paint, its just a series of tiny brush strokes with a 000 brush.
Really nice work!
Hello, fellow paint fume sniffers, I just realized that I left something out! I gave the whole thing a coat of AK Ultra Matt Varnish at the end. The Citadel wash dries pretty glossy, but AK brings the matt excellence and unifies the finish overall, including taking the sheen off the printed labels.
Killer! ❤All those 6-15mm players that suck at painting and especially building interesting bases should very carefully watch your vids and learn. 100% tiny diorama style! Pure tabletop sex!
Tabletop sex. . . Now there's a title for my next Miniature Dork Universe saga. You'll need a credit card for that one. (And a strong stomach). UA-cam wouldn't like that one. The robocop algorithm wouldn't approve. You can have a video called "Headshots" where people get their brains blown out, but you can't drop an F-bomb without getting demonetized. You can show giant zits being popped, but you can't say WW2. Buncha wankers. Ooops, went off topic. . .
Beyond the excellent tutorial, THE MUSIC, DUDE, FRIGGIN' AWESOME!
That's my band Existench! 97.48% of human beings hate it. . .
@@daviessuperchannel well, I for one did not hate it! I'll search for more of it, IT'S FUCKING AMAZING!

Uhhm death metal. Sounds only good when shitfaced drunk :D
Exciting stuff. Enjoy the vacation. I'd like to see some Normandy terrain and basing. I thought I saw a lot of Normandy in the trailer you posted a few months back. Looking forward to the Crossfire mods as well.
I have some videos on making wall texture for MDF and matt board buildings, making magnetized storefront signs and paved roads. That features some of my Normandy items. I've built most of my Normandy terrain already, but I must have something in my stash. I'll find something!
This could be the most important thing I have ever watched...
. . . at last! Somebody understands!! I don't know whether to be happy or terrified. The universe will will be ours.
Impressive
Great work with this humble little kit and love your comments about the flag.
Awesome video but yeah 3min intro is excessive. Should do like 15-30 seconds
Great work! I especially love your bases! 💚
I missed which brand you’re using for the 12mm minis. Great idea for an O Group scale
Hello there, Mr. Doom, I am using mostly Victrix. I fill in some of the gaps with 10mm Pendraken. Things like drivers and crews.
@@daviessuperchannel brilliant thank you!
Cool tutorial... I've book marked it when I head out to the Pacific for my WW2 terrain.
So many people liked this one, I will follow up with more.
Great work as usual! What brand/type is the vegetation? Looks really good.
Thanks! I bought the tufts around the gun on Ali Express, I’m not even sure the brand. Just search on Ali for miniature tufts or wargame tufts, something like that. They have a huge variety and the shipping is free for many of them.
It's the OCD that gets us to make masterpieces.... despite that tabletop standard would be fine. Looking forward to your future videos and have fun
I always thought about making trees this way, but I always thought they would be very fragile. I'm going to give it a try these days! very good video!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. You're best off not to handle the leafy areas too much, but they are not overly fragile. Use live wood and PVC glue or the acrylic gel and it will fortify it.
Enjoy the break. Plenty of military history in Poland if you thought about grabbing some pictures and video footage.
I've been to most already. I've only omitted Auschwitz, my faith in humanity is already low enough. There's buildings in Warsaw with shot up facades from the uprising, wrecked buildings in Silesia, little signs all over the place. Then some great museums. I always have my eyes open, when I'm there, for something new.
All of that sounds awesome. I use an amended version of Crossfire but most of my changes come from ‘Steven’s Balagan’ blog, particularly the AFV variant. I’ve amended the morale so that winning units are pinned after a close combat. Very few of the changes are mine or original but I do think they make a great game better, so very interested to see your take on it. What scale and make are your aircraft? I’m currently building forces for Blood Red Skies, but using 1/144 plastic kits. In my non-OCD, haphazard fashion, I’m 30 planes in, only to discover I can’t get several aircraft I want. Have a great trip, enjoy the break.
Steven's Balagan is a great blog, I'm glad he keeps it going. So many good blogs have faded away over the years. It seems like most Crossfire players amend the rules a bit to suit them. It's a good game and simple to play, which makes it easy for rule changes. My planes are 1/144, they are easier to come by when it comes to plastic kits. 3D prints are starting to look pretty nice, too. Depending on which aircraft you need, the fellow at this site might be able to print you up some: bayonetsandbrushes.co.uk/contact/ I bought some Martin 139 bombers from him and I think he intends to have a large range of aircraft, including the weird and wonderful ones.
@@daviessuperchannel brilliant, thanks for the link, exactly what I need. I’ve got plenty of Zvezda Hurricanes and Messerschmitts, but Zeroes and Mustangs are a lot harder to find.
@@samb2052 Sweet Models makes wicked 1/144 Zero variants, including the Nakajima-built one with pontoons. They have pretty good Mustangs, too. You get 2 kits in a box.
@@daviessuperchannel I’ve never come across them, but I’m sure Google will oblige. 😁
painting and basing is top notch
Another masterpiece. I've picked up some bits and pieces of BF Japanese stuff, mostly support weapons and was hoping to play Bolt Action in 15mm with them..... eventually.
Thanks! Good luck painting them up for Bolt Action.
BF have put their pacific rerelease back to Feb 2025 .
Why doesn't that surprise me?
They've been talking about it since like 2019 lol
Excellent work and excellent research. And I have never thought to try and get the gun trail between the legs of a figure. Genius! Have you also added flock to the helmets of the crew?
Thanks! No, the flock on the helmets was already part of the figures. Those two are from QRF.
Beautiful painting Ryan. Just as a note of interest, the machine gun turret had traverse obstruction with the drivers compartment and so the TAC and TAY were supposed to work in pairs defending each other by covering each others obstructed arcs of fire. Thats why the Dutch had both :)
Thanks! Yes, someone else pointed that out to me. Could those things be any more impractical?
@@daviessuperchannel Its the beauty of the early war arms race mate. Very little was properly tested under stress conditions and gave rise to some incredibly challenging and interesting scenarios I think. :) 🤣🤣🤣
Hey davies.. im late to the party.. but youve inspired me to buy some PP!!! Could you please tell me who makes the bren gunner in your halftrack (with the PP head)??
That is a Flames of War figure from their Tobruk Bunkers set.
@daviessuperchannel appreciate that! If you ever run out of ideas for vids.. would love to see some NWE love, maybe some british armour/infantry painting? Loving your content mate 👍
@@thomashood155 Thanks, fellow. Yes, in fact, I am planning to do some 9th RTR Churchills and 15th Scottish Division infantry, so there will be some videos relating to that. It might take a couple of months to get started, but it's in the plans. I'm not sure what the topics of the videos will be yet, there are many great painting tutorials on the topic already.
I'm just sitting here, watching the video. "Ok, yeah. Got it. Yeah, that looks pretty ni--- DISCHARGE? WHAT?"
Those lasers need some callobration 😅
I know, but at least they have wicked sound effects!
Well, this finally made me pull the trigger on getting some of the Victrix stuff. What incredible work you did on these. Hope mine can turn out a quarter as good. Question though, where did you source the .50-cal? Unless it's not pictured on Victrix's site, it doesn't appear to be in the pack. Thanks again, this is awesome.
Thanks! It's kind of hard not to buy cool shit. . . The .50-cal is from Pendraken. They are 10mm miniatures, but they are actually a little more beefy than the 12mm guys. They are great for filling in the gaps, though. Minifigs has the water-cooled M1917 Brownings, if you want to do a historical battalion, rather than the 'O' Group list. The M1919 Brownings are company weapons, but this isn't reflected in the rules.
Great attention to detail as every Ryan. Great stuff. Cheers, Dex.
Very, very nice looking troops! 😎DCRB

Very nicely done. Like the labels and the colors really pop up while still being realistic.
