Whisky Review - Blended or not, is age just a number?
SUMMARY:
Created by Dewar’s renowned master blender Stephanie MacLeod as a replacement to their ‘Signature NAS’ is the 25 yo.
Wonderful packaging, c$200 40% abv.
Finished in ‘freshly-dumped’ (disgorged) Royal Brackla casks, with the intention to influence from that malt production.
Achieved medal awards and deservingly so, but my opinion drives a reality position on this.
OPINION:
40% remains too low for me, but it may be ideal for others.
Smooth and enjoyable, but lacking the ‘oomph’ one wants from a more mature whisky, blended or not.
Great gift with the packaging, if looking to impress a less mature/expecting palate.
However, on the whole, unconvinced worth the cost to experience balance.
NOTES:
Nose - Light, bright and sweetness.
Taste - Smooth, yet thin, with the grain influence edging out the malt delivering a vanilla, caramel and slightly citrus experience.
Finish - Medium.

SUMMARY: “Cask is King”! 56.2% 26yo Irish whiskey finished off in rum casks in Scotland courtesy of the Blackadder Statement distillery. This #32/140 bottles. Approx £300 gbp. Note the use of the ‘r’ in whisky as per Irish spelling (before those unawares, think it is a misspelling). OPINION: A real whiskey of full potential and not for the light of heart. Superb dram full of texture, smooth and...

Whisky Review - Bunnahabhain Stiureadair NAS - Islay Entry Point
Переглядів 135Рік тому
Bunnahabhain stiuireadair In the early days, the site was accessed almost exclusively by boat. Small puffer ships, able to navigate the treacherous waters of the Sound of Islay, came loaded with supplies and returned to the mainland laden with a cargo of the finest whisky. One of the latest additions to the distilleries core range is the Stiuireadair (Gaelic for ‘Helmsman’), named in tribute to...
Whisky Review - Laphroaig Select NAS - Islay Entry Point
Переглядів 227Рік тому
Laphroaig Select (NAS) Why? Good question. Perhaps because another of its entry level, the Quarter Cask, is so damn awful. What made them think to throw in a various cask influences (Oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hogsheads etc) would deliver a quality entry level single malt? It has won various awards including Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Awar...

Whisky Review - Ardbeg The Ultimate 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky - Islay Entry Point Ardbeg Ten Years Old is highly regarded as a heavy, peaty, smoky expression. Great value for money, they say. World Whisky of the Year 2008 winner for Islay 12 year and under. I can see why it won the award, but I do not hold in the same level of high regard as the judging panel! Distillery: Ardb...
Whisky Review - Lagavulin 8 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky - Islay Entry Point

Whisky Review - Lagavulin 8 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky - Limited Edition Why? You can thank its well-received release of the 200th anniversary edition, in 2016. Subsequently, it became part of the core range. The famous story to it, is that the author of The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom, Mr. Alfred Barnard, said of this age range in 1880s, it is “exceptionally fine”. ...

World Whisky Review - Introduction to Islay Whisky & Upcoming Islay Whisky Reviews Islay is an island off the west coast of Scotland. Famous for its smoky peaty whiskies. What makes it special? Are entry point, young aged and NAS (no age statement) single malt and blended single malt expressions any good? World Whisky Review - Lagavulin Double Matured Single Malt Islay Scotch Whisky - Distillers Edition Mature in Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask Wood and available in various year-dated and batch numbers (Eg. Ur full of s..t. I'ts nt that bad
You must have been extracting the black oil from the sands to acquire that one Greg! Enjoyed the review Sláinte 🥃
Thank you Fraser! It was an impromptu purchase and well worth the trial! More reviews coming each week
I bet Christopher Hitchens would have appreciated your excellent reviews were he still with us . All the best from north aberdeen near speyside.
Thank you so much! Sorry for my late response. I’m about to release more reviews now.
Interesting thoughts. I personally think the current batches of Lagavulin 8 are absolutely fantastic. I think Lagavulin 8 is one for the more mature/experienced palates. Perhaps buy another bottle now, and save it for the future when you become a little more experienced. Sorry to be blunt, suggesting Lagavulin 16 holds itself better demonstrates your relative inexperience with scotch single malt whisky. It really does. Happy whisky journeys! 🥃 Slainte
Hi Mendip Fox. Each to their own, and to disagree is welcome here. As is sarcasm. Look forward to more from you. Slainte
@@MITSPub Excellent! Looking forward to future content from Man in the Sands.
Excelente compadre.
Muchas gracias, compadre! Your engagement and support is much appreciated.
I loved this review! I watched 4 episodes in a row!! Thank you Greg!
Fala! Thank you so much for telling me and supporting the reviews.
Hello from Macedonia 🇲🇰 🇰🇷
Z’dravo Macedonia!!
I missed your videos!! Interesting facts and information as always!!
I really appreciate this comment. I am always asking myself if the detail can be too little or too much, when so often all viewers really want to see is my initial tasting!
Well I am sure everyone agrees with your colourful and stark comments. It is really not a good dram and 😂”not worthy of lighting the Christmas pudding “…. That was clever indeed! Ciao Grazie 🙏 S.
Thank you Sandro! My thoughts come in the moment LOL! Very happy you liked it.
A fine review and I agree that the 12 yo is what I always coke back to. I enjoyed the ad cladnach NAS and bottled at 50% but it was one dimensional in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as always. Ciao 👋 S.
Thank you Sandro; your consideration on the review is very much appreciated. The support keeps me going!

Such a fine review. Thanks Gregory ! Ciao 👋 S.
😊 thanks for your kindness, and upcoming rereview . Wow Korea. Ciao 👋
Love this whisky and appreciate your fine review. Indeed the recent bottlings are milder in my opinion as well. Kind regards ciao 👋 SF
Thank you Sandro and that’s a great observation for me to learn, about the recent bottling.
Hi there ! Nice explanation with additional information 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 keep it up and let me enjoy your channel more !!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your support and kind comment !
Excellent review! Cheers.
Thank you! Much appreciated. New one being released over the weekend :-)
In my opinion this is most probably one of the very worst whiskies of all time. This is what gives critics ammunition for lambasting bad whiskies.
Hi Cliff and thank you for taking the time to engage and leave your well received comment. That’s the beauty of whisky and palates. I’ve had worse and I consider it more for mixing, but it certainly isn’t one of the worst of all time for me. It’s an interesting observation you make and one that retains gravitas in the whisky world. What do you think of the trend targeting a younger ‘more exotic’ market? Johnny Walker Blonde, is one of the latest I read about. I hope you try a few more of my videos - I’m releasing a current theme on entry point Islay. Following this will be cheap 21 to blended scotch whisky versus expensive blended scotch whisky versus 21yo single malt. All leading up to a Xmas special. Thanks again for engaging.
I think this whisky is a great value bottle at least in Italy 🇮🇹 one can find it for 45 euros on offer. I like it with a single drop of water and letting it sit in the glass for 10-15 minutes. It then opens up and gives its best. Perhaps you may revisit it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Grazie 🙏 ciao SF.
Sandro, welcome to my channel and thank you for engaging me. This is great news; I suspected it may open up if left with a drop of the padre to sit for a while. Your experience with 10-15 minutes, makes sense. I still have some of the bottle in my home; I’ll revisit it with this approach. I think, generally, this shouldn’t need opening up considering what it is. Not that it shouldn’t benefit from it, but what we are being marketed here is a drink from opening, smooth, deep, sultry and velvety port cask finish Glenmorangie. I will come back to you after I revisit! Thanks again.
😂 entertaining but a little pricey for my budget. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Grazie 🙏 ciao 👋 SF
I have not tried this as in Italy it is more expensive than the 16 which I adore. Allow me to disagree with your water recommendation: I find even two drops of water helps most whiskies release their bouquet ( especially NCF and natural colour bottles at 46% or higher ) I tired an English whisky Filey Bay at cask strength with the owner Mr. David Thompson who after trying it neat agreed the smallest amount of water releases the oils and sets the aromas a flight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and fine review. Kindest regards, Grazie 🙏 ciao SF.
Hi Sandro. I always welcome a disagreeing perspective; that’s the beauty of whisky and our palates. Cask strength, definitely I agree benefits with a drop of the holy water and on the whole I agree. However, with an entry point whisky, I feel it can take away from what it has been distilled to offer. I’m not saying it won’t take the edge off it, make it more palpable, but it’s not necessarily what was intended. For this theme, rather than do all 3 options as usual, I have kept that entry point idea in mind and reviewed purely neat and naked as nature intended. My next theme, shall be neat and with water and left to open up too. No ice (!). Hope you enjoy what comes ahead.
Ciao from Milano Italy 🇮🇹 I enjoyed this video and subscribed so I can follow your thoughts and opinions. I enjoy peated whisky especially in autumn with some Latakia based pipe tobacco ( I have been smoking a pipe for 36 years and my doctor says no major damage yet) I am now sipping a Ballechin 10 which is not Islay but a delicious whisky in my opinion. Kindest regards. Grazie 🙏 ciao 👋 SF
Ciao Sandro and welcome. Thank you for subscribing and I see you have commented too. Your voice is very welcomed here and I hope I entertain you, as well as share positively my reviews with your experiences.
Enjoyed the science behind the peat - barley - fennel. Looking forward to the big reveal 😆
Thank you, Fraser! Hope you enjoy the reviews, they’ll be released mid-October.
What a nice review. Watching this for the third time drinking along. Your take is very unique and helps me expand my vocabulary and more importantly my experience. To me it is like marshmallows over a tire fire. Behind it all is that tropical bouquet found in springbank and hazelburn, which, in this, shows initially as grass. Honestly my favorite of the offerings from sb.
Thank you so much for your compliment and providing your colourful tasting review also. Fantastic! I will be releasing more reviews over October and hope you enjoy them as much as this one.
Great episode. So passionate and insightful as ever. And after enjoying the sample you kindly shared (before watching the video) wholeheartedly agree..apples, the afterglow, fizz on the lips, honey with water etc. Articulated on your review rather better and more in depth than I ever could. slàinte!!
Thank you so much Fraser! Can’t wait to release more soon!
Had 2 bottles 1 pre xmas and 1 for xmas just came back from Morrisons 5 bottles £16 a pop I liked plus I bought 2 others pre xmas as gifts no complaints thus far.
I'll have to try this since it seems to be up my alley!
Excellent, I suspect it will be !
I personally didn't like this one when I had it, but based on your review I will give it another try. Thanks for the quality content.
Thank you for your comment and support. If you do try it again, I hope it better this time around!
Great content!
Thank you! Happy you commented with your support.
A nice dram. Cheers
Isn’t it! Cheers and thanks for your support and comment.
Nice review and information. Cheers
Thanks so much!
I can tell you REALLY enjoyed this one!
I can never hide my enjoyment of something good! I should add, it is a new whisky for me to enjoy and I did love it.
Well, Loch Lomond out of the list. 😆
Ha! I highly recommend Loch Lomond 12yo ! 😀
What a beautiful bottle the Japanese one!! Looking forward to watching the review!
I am so happy you made this comment. I hope everyone thinks the same. It is simply beautiful to look at.
Amazing review as always!! Thank you Greg!!!
That you so much! Love your positive response and please share the love with others :-)
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for the positive comment!
This is awesome! You are like the Steve Irwin of Whiskey!
Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy some of the others.
Game on!! Well, could almost feel the taste you described! Amazing!
Game on! Thank you, wait for the tasting review coming next week! Special whisky
Whisky?.. I might consider. Brazil nuts, dark chocolate, 45,8%...
Nice to hear !
Haven't tried this one!! Great video!
“Headless Kitchen” :-) Thanks so much, it’s a firm recommendation to everyone I know
Great one Man in the Sand
Thank you so much Nic!
Looking forward to hearing the Singleton review!
Thank you! Looking forward to sharing :-)
I don't have a matured palate yet. But probably reading more about it will help me understand the taste better. The essence of peat in Talisker is really good. Hahahaha I really like Glenmorangie. Guess I am an amateur!😂
No not at all! Specifically this Quinta Ruban essence from their core selection, is not as impressive as marketed and by comparison to others out there, it has tough competition. But I am not applying this to all Glenmorangie 🤡. However, generally Glenmorangie can be lighter and less impactful than what a more mature palate or ‘demanding’ palate is wanting. Which is also part of their attraction to their huge following. If you were to compare a Glenmorangie age statement to a Glenlivet age statement then it gets very interesting and starts to question the assumptions of the drinker.
Looking forward to it
Good to know your opinion on this whiskey as I was looking forward to getting a bottle of it. I'll hold off for the summary!
Thank you ! Summary coming Friday and makes it clear what I think 🤔
Watching as discussed
Another Glorious episode
Thanks so much David!!
Season 2 is back!!! Thank you for this wonderful episode!!! It seems we have to try this one
Thank you for your awesome support and I absolutely recommend trying it. It will be an interesting comparison against the next 2 port wine cask finished whiskies, in episodes 2&3.
