  • Whisky Review - Lagavulin 8 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky - Limited Edition
Why? You can thank its well-received release of the 200th anniversary edition, in 2016. Subsequently, it became part of the core range. The famous story to it, is that the author of The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom, Mr. Alfred Barnard, said of this age range in 1880s, it is “exceptionally fine”. I am sure it was. Back then in the 19th century, it would have considered exceptionally fine. I do not concur, with our erudite author, today.
    Distillery: Lagavulin (owned by Diageo)
Region: Islay - south east coast
    Age: 8 year old
    Strength: 48%
    Price: $40-$50
    Nose: Peat, brine, fresh cedar
Palate: Peat, smoke, Indian spice, marzipan
Finish: Peat, brine, oak (lingering wood ash, don’t be fooled - short finish)
Verdict: Starts with a wave of peat into the mouth, but the smoke quickly evaporates, leaving the personality of the expression discombobulated. Not a bad introduction to the Lagavulin range, for the novice. Short of praise, from a more mature palate. Not one I shall return to.
    라가불린 8년 싱글 몰트
왜 라가불린일까요? 2016년에 라가불린 200주년 기념판이 출시된 것에 감사해야 합니다. 그 후에 라가불린 8년산은 핵심 되었습니다. 유명한 일화로, “The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom”의 저자인 알프레드 바너드가 1880년대 나온 이 위스키에 대해 "상당히 좋다" 평가하였습니다.

I have not tried this as in Italy it is more expensive than the 16 which I adore. Allow me to disagree with your water recommendation: I find even two drops of water helps most whiskies release their bouquet ( especially NCF and natural colour bottles at 46% or higher ) I tired an English whisky Filey Bay at cask strength with the owner Mr. David Thompson who after trying it neat agreed the smallest amount of water releases the oils and sets the aromas a flight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and fine review. Kindest regards, Grazie 🙏 ciao SF.

Hi Sandro. I always welcome a disagreeing perspective; that’s the beauty of whisky and our palates. Cask strength, definitely I agree benefits with a drop of the holy water and on the whole I agree. However, with an entry point whisky, I feel it can take away from what it has been distilled to offer. I’m not saying it won’t take the edge off it, make it more palpable, but it’s not necessarily what was intended. For this theme, rather than do all 3 options as usual, I have kept that entry point idea in mind and reviewed purely neat and naked as nature intended. My next theme, shall be neat and with water and left to open up too. No ice (!). Hope you enjoy what comes ahead.

Interesting thoughts. I personally think the current batches of Lagavulin 8 are absolutely fantastic. I think Lagavulin 8 is one for the more mature/experienced palates. Perhaps buy another bottle now, and save it for the future when you become a little more experienced. Sorry to be blunt, suggesting Lagavulin 16 holds itself better demonstrates your relative inexperience with scotch single malt whisky. It really does. Happy whisky journeys! 🥃 Slainte
