Fu for Thought Podcast episode 140 - A Bittersweet Life (2005)
We are Cyrus-less again this week, but me and Devan sit down for a little change of pace and review the Korean classic, A BITTERSWEET LIFE.
We do a deep dive on the film's themes, discuss whether this is a gangster film or revenge film (or both), and, of course, gush over the amazing action sequences.
Later on, we answer listener questions and discuss Quentin Tarantino's recent reveal that he'll never watch Toy Story 4. Enjoy!

Kungfusation Ep. 4 with Angela Jordan (AJKick101)
This is one of my personal favorite films. Nice episode! I think you might be more familiar with Billy Chan than you think: Billy Chan Wu Ngai was a choreographer for several other movies like Prodigal Son ,Knockabout. Warriors Two, Odd Couple etc. He also directed several films like License to Steal with Joyce Godenzi and Yuen Biao among others. He was the assistant director for Heart of The Dragon. He shows up in small parts in many films ( he plays a small part in The Victim as one of Beardy's friends). Fun fact: His brother is Peter Chan Lung ( The wallet from Prodigal Son and Fong Sai Yuk are probably Peter's most known roles, Peter plays the brother of Beardy's wife in The Victim) About the physical capabilities of some performers: Yuen Wah said that he was among the opera troupe students the most adept at flips/acrobatics in general (Swordsman HKL interview I think), whereas Yuen Biao said that his biggest strength was doing physical feats in a confined space ( Eastern heroes The Victim DVD interview I think?). This was well demonstrated in the Eastern Condors stage performance where Yuen Wah did several flips covering space whereas yuen biao did several flips while standing in place. PS: If you wanna demonstrate undercranking to the extreme just have a look at 90's Donnie Yen choreography (especially his TV work) :D in terms of format I like a mix as much as the next person, but as a nerd I am somewhat partial to discussing the ins and out. End of Novel :D
@@legendarycurryvideos654 Ah, maybe I do know Billy Chan better than I think! And yep, Donnie’s 90’s work is nuts with the under cranking. Some of it’s unwatachable. Thanks for watching!

Island on fire is a good time always enjoyed this film dubbed or subbed its a bloody shame we never got the uncut version all the best fu
Thank you, brother! I'm excited to revisit Island of Fire. I'm miffed knowing there's an uncut version out there, though.
Been following you on Twitter for awhile and recently discovered that you have a YT channel. Will be sticking around to watch some more. I've watched two Japanese pinku films, A New Love in Tokyo and Door 2, and I actually loved them both lol. But A Chinese Torture Chamber seems like a step further into the extreme that I may not enjoy. Is it more like a comedy like you said or is it actually pure flifth?
I hate to so this but it's kind of both??? It's at times very filthy, but it's all done tongue in cheek. For example, early on there's a...well..."jerk off competition" with the winner being the one that can ejaculate the furthest. The probmen? In the line up of men taking part, there's a woman dressed up as a man. It makes for some pretty big laughs, despite being very filthy. Thanks for making your way over here! I appreciate the love.
I tried to record The Defender in the early 2000s, before it was available for purchase. But bad weather ruined network TV that evening. So I bought bootleg of the original international English dub from Grandmaster Video instead.
I think I had an Australian VHS of it at one point, but then had the same old version of The Defender everyone else had.
@@fuforthought - Today I have Brazilian double-feature DVD of this and DM2, both of which are the International English dub with Portuguese subs. I don't think I've seen the Defender cut.
@@blakematthews9608 I hope yu have a good time with them. DM2 is always a solid watch, no matter how many times I've seen it.
My local cinema was hosting a Lee Chang Dong retrospective about a month ago, and I was able to see Peppermint Candy and Oasis back to back. Thought they were really great. Preferred Peppermint Candy on the first watch, but Oasis settles in the soul weeks after. Just received my blu ray in the mail. Bouta watch them all this weekend. Blessings family.
@@philipbayless9275 That’s awesome to know! The way you said “settles in the soul” is exactly what I want from these films. Can’t wait to watch them, myself.
@fuforthought Secret Sunshine and Burning are probably his best and most popular movies. But perhaps it's better to start with these earlier films so that you can appreciate them more instead of expecting masterpieces.

Yuen Wah eventually had a beard in Supercop. I thought he did in Iceman Cometh but he just had a mustache..
@@MartialArtsFilmFreak Ah yes, a cheeky goatee.
Devan is growing into a true kung-fu fan. Love to see it. Also, if you guys are getting into samurai films, i think Sword of Doom would be a great episode
@@thekungfukid1990 I love Sword of Doom! We definitely plan to review a few samurai films in the future.
Sorry Beardy, but you know who had the best real beard was in Kung Fu movies? Yu Chenghui. He was in Shaolin Temple with Jet Li. Especially in his later years when his beard was even longer and perfectly pure white, he looked exactly like what you'd imagine the old hermit kung fu master at the top of a mountain would look like. He wasn't in alot of movies or television though, and mostly he was in mainland stuff. He was a very respected sword master and seemed like he spent much more of his time and energy in martial arts than in acting.
@@stanleychen7147 His drunken sword was second to none. An absolute legend! And yep, he had a sweet beard!
The thing about undercranking is it can really jump out at you if there's something natural going on in the background - suddenly fire is flaring all over the place, or trees that were waving in a breeze are thrashing like there's a hurricane. Hell, sometimes even the actors' clothes are suddenly flapping like flags or the dust is flying off them at a ridiculous speed.
@@MacKravitz Very true! You definitely need only two fighters on screen to pull off undercranking, and preferably in a room. In nature, it just doesn’t work.
Re: Samuel L. Jackson - "Yes, they deserved to die! And I hope they burn in hell!" is from A Time to Kill.
Probably not the direction you were thinking, but for Korean films, The Host, or The Good, The Bad and the Weird would be fun.
@@mechanickzilla Great choice! I’ve recently purchased that film and have not gotten around to rewatching it.

Hey guys. Great episode. Brandon Lee was the actor in mind for the role of Neo in the Matrix when the Wachowski's were writing the script in the early 90's. I think he would have been awesome and agree that basically anything that Keanu did, he could have done. Interestingly, Brandon did want to move away from doing strictly action roles so I think he could have turned out to be quite a versatile actor. He was also friends with George Clooney and knew Brad Pitt before they were super famous so could have followed their career paths too.
@@MrSosodef72 Brandon could have easily stolen Reeves’ career. I can see him in Speed and Point Break!

Grain o’ salt & all, but I’d heard that Lee was up for the role of Johnny Cage in the 90’s Mortal Kombat, and that the Wachowskis originally had him in mind for Neo. Kinda makes you wonder about an alternate reality John Wick franchise.

@@oldschoolkungfufilms2670 Great idea! That can certainly be arranged.
Caught the trailer for The Crippled Masters before the VHS rental “Necronomicon: Book Of The Dead” and immediately named my band at the time The Crippled Masters. After a while tracked down a VHS copy and then a DVD copy. Now might have to pick up this new release, if only for the special features! What dod you think of the main baddie? I know a lot of people dislike/are really confused by him, his hump, and the ending.
@@mikeylannon7818 Ah man, I like the villain! He’s kinda random but I love his hump and the metallic sound it makes when hit. Classic kung fu cinema stuff. He’s pretty decent. Plus his death scene lasts ages, which is ace. I’ve been seeing a lot of gifs from Necronomicon: Book of the Dead floating around and that looks like a wild film! Do you recommend it for a horror fan and gore hound?
