2024: Recently bought two used a7r ii’s. The battery grip would be helpful. Thanks for the power-saving tips. They help a bit.
I got one for $550
The man. The legend!
Super useful trick to use the focus peaking. I love that shot of the bark that you came out with.
The intro sold me! I am feeling much more optimistic about this lens now. Can't believe the amount of foreground/background separation you got with this high aperture lens. Shows your camera skills are much more important than technical specs.
@@nbarshain that’s very true! Learn to use what you have to its fullest and the rest gets easy.
@MalcolmWalker actually now that we're here, would you be able to share some quick tips about how you achieved those looks with this lens? I imagine it's also different for different focal lengths.
@@nbarshain the more depth you have to the background the better. Wide open at 5.6 is still a lot of blur on most lenses in telephoto, but to achieve the good separation, you need the backdrop to be further away, gives it a very mashed looked with out much detail, but it cuts your subject out really well. Depth of field with all lenses increases what’s in focus the further your focus distance is. Very Narrow plain at close up but as your focus goes out further, the depth of that focus plain increases as well. Good luck!
@@MalcolmWalker Oh sweet, so like the way you got the ant shot and the grass shot towards the end of the montage was just to get very close to the subject? Those were the coolest shots in the video imo.
@@nbarshainyes just shoot telephoto near the minimum focus distance. I have another video talking about that method with my 100-400GM
Great info, no BS, I appreciate it thanks, Malcolm!
I just brought one for photos… wanted a high MP camera! 📷 excited to use it
thank you for this review - i've searched 10 of these things now and this one seems to be best fit for me
@@pocketnoisefiles I still use mine. Hasn’t ever falls. Apart or off it yet. I pulled it out like twice just to clean it.
Good for an interview intentional photography like me
Hope this camera cover not damaged the lenses as the gap is too thin. Im also planning to buy one for 15 pro max because it's very difficult to protect the lenses when camera goes bigger
@@charithr.baddage4957 I used the case for a little over two years without any issues or camera lens damage. I have since switched cases and never damaged the lenses with them exposed. They have sapphire lenses which are very hard to scratch. Eventually the lens cover broke off which is why I switched cases after two years.
@@MalcolmWalkerso the slider won’t touch the lenses although its very close? Thanks a lot for the feedback
I never noticed it touching the lenses. I also never had a mark on the lenses even after getting rid of the case and keeping the lenses exposed. I just traded that phone in for the new 16 pro and the phone looked new like it was out of the box.
thank you!
Nice Video ! Is nice to go around with your camera. I hope you will print some of your best photos
What happened exactly
@@matthewpateofficial trying to learn how to do a live from my phone. I think nobody was notified of it because I missed some settings.
Hey man
Can it be a sneak voice recorder? Does it make any kind of sound? What is the capacity of the expanded memory?
Just sub your channel great camera test, also can you test this camera on a night of meteor shower at iso 32000, it'll be great. I'm thinking of getting this camera on Christmas 😅
Amazing info and nice sense of humor there boss... Loved the info and the way you describe it! You know your sh*t !!🤓
What is the resolution of you're shooting in apsc mode with this?
It is 18Mp
Hey 👋🏾 Malcom I am a new beginner & I had recently brought a Sony NEX 7 with the Sony 16-50mm Kit lens for $300 & it’s like brand new & I had brought the camera because I have a small home set up with a MacBook Pro 💻 a iPhone 13 Pro & I need to know if the $6.94 remote from Amazon will work & control the NEX 7 video like the remote is doing to your Sony camera?
As long as the NEX-7 supports IR remote it should work. Look in the menus for the option to turn it on or off. I don’t have an older camera like that to try on but Sony has been known to to change the light frequencies between generations.
@@MalcolmWalkerOk thanks I do have one more question does the delete button work to delete a video ?
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I can easily push it to 6400 now.
Glad it helped
Hey! Thank you very much for this video! Do you think the FX30 would manage to get to an hour straight of shooting at 4K 50p?
@@barisaydin3769 yeah it has never overheated on me. Just make sure you have the fan on
@@MalcolmWalker Thank you very much for the response! 👍🏼
Thanks for your video. This is my second watching over several weeks. I was musing that if 1.9K people have viewed your video and only 36 have given you a like, does it suggest that most have a good ol' 24-105 f/4, and you've stirred some cognitive dissonance? 😁 Check out Mark Galer's travel video: "India", shot primarily with the 20-70, on an A7RV. It's enough to make one want to buy the 20-70; I did. Having 61mp at one's disposal makes the 24-105 f/4 somewhat limited and, with its weight, somewhat redundant. Furthermore, the 20-70 size is better for the A7C variants. I have an A7RV and recently purchased an A7CR for my bicycle handlebar bag, where space and weight are significant considerations. I have an atavistic attachment for the 24-105; however, longer isn't always better when bicycle touring.
I own the 20-70, the 24-70 gm ii and the 24-105. I agree with you that 20mm is beguiling, especially as a travel lens. I also have a 20mm 1.8 prime, but if you want to travel with one lens... With choice, comes suffering.
whats your favorite?
@@DeeNow Of the zooms, the 20-70 because of the 20mm focal length. The 20mm prime is a great lens, but for bike travel, I need greater versatility than a single prime. The 20-70 is smaller and lighter than the 24-105, which is a consideration on a bike.
Thanks for this informative video! The background music was a bit loud and distracting for me, but that might just be me...
@@Rutger5498 thank you for the feedback, I think in that video the mix was off and I didn’t catch it, it’s weird how in the edit it sounds good but then I upload it and it sounds completely different.
@@MalcolmWalker Great video nonetheless, thanks again 🙏
I actually use the small rig Half cage and can slide my camera out and off to the left because it Does not have the battery door protector and makes it much fast to go from Gimbal to handheld. I just got an FX30 and was thinking about getting the Tilta or Smallrig full cage but do not want to have to take my camera off my RSC2 pushing forward. The Newer Title cages let you turn the full cage into a half cage and small rig does not, Hope they would change that in the future.
The battery access is defiantly an issue. I recently started using a larger external power supply and it works very well. Good info on the cage options too.
Thank you, this worked for updating to v4 too
thanks
Can you record music from the mic input?
I would imagine so, however I do not know if the recorder will record in full frequency. It seems to handle vocal sound very nicely as it should, but probably better buying a Zoom Recorder for that.
I love my mark 2! I have the A7riv also but will never sell the Mark 2! Still use it also
I still use my mk2 too, its been awhile since I have been on UA-cam regularly, but I still shoot with it.
Ah, the Monahans Sandhills. I have access to some lovely dunes north of there and further from the lights of town if you ever want to do some more night photography in that setting.
Really cool studio spot, great color selections 😎🎞🎥💎
You recommend for photos of wedding ?
I think in the right hands it will work amazingly well. but the A7III has a much better focusing ability and much better battery, with a price point these days that is about comparable with the A7Rii. That being said, the A7Rii is a better camera then the A7III IMO.
Totally agree….
I'm looking to get a full frame camera. It does surprise me though that two people now have said that 3200 is good and 6400 is their limit. That's only one stop more than my limits on M43. I would use 6400 with something like dxo though. So I was expecting a bit more. But it looks a great camera. Just the right size and price used. I'm looking for a high megapixel camera and this seems a good option for me.
I don't think you will be disappointed by the camera. I have recently found anew liking to the higher ISO that I usually stayed away from using Luminar. The noise reduction in the right situation is good. If you want a high megapixel camera for a great price. This would be it. However lately I have been recommending the A7III to more people because it too has come way down in price and has a-lot more modern features that make it a great camera too.
When they say base iso does this mean using 800 iso works well in sunlight? I mean I know I can up my arpeture to darken but I don’t wanna lose my 1.4 look. In that case should I deviate from the dual base iso at that point?
It means to shoot log footage you have to be at 800 iso for base iso. It can go lower or higher from that but what you would want is an ND filter to help darken the image without changing your depth of field look.
@@MalcolmWalker Roger that kinda figured that would be the case just cracked this baby open definitely different than the A6500 I used many years ago
can you show the gimbal settings for each motor I'm struggling to balance the exact same setup
Probably what ever is default, I have never had to mess with the motor settings. You may know this but make sure the balance is centered so no matter which way you move the camera it holds that position. When I was a noob to gimbals I balanced them incorrectly by making it balance level. I had difficult times getting it to work correctly.
Thank you Malcolm for the very helpful comparison video! God bless and good luck!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Very late to this video, but I appreciate the insight and I loved seeing your photo examples especially of the Milky Way. Ever since around 2019 I pretty much dreamed of getting my hands on an A7rII or III, but I had to put it on the backburner. Now I've been selling off some other camera gear to go towards one and I have my eyes set on the II. Even though this video in itself is old, I have no major issues with the older Sony screens/etc. The bodies themselves and lenses far outweigh that for me. Just watching this and hearing you talk about the IBIS has got me psyched up. As someone who is naturally very 'shaky' I've had lower success rates in the past with hitting focus on APS-C bodies that didn't have any stabilization. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these monsters. Great video!
I am glad you enjoyed the video! Yes it is old, and also my most popular video by far, but I still use this camera as my main photography camera. I just cant justify the replacement yet. That and I really made a big push to video equipment. You cant go wrong with either one. You will enjoy it!
Cheaper cost Sdcard is bonus.
Yes, SD cards a cheaper for this camera. You can buy more or bigger size cards for the cost of the new ones the newer cameras need to get the speed they shoot.
caseoh dad
Thanks for the video! I just want to get in the game and have been researching for days..I've been looking for a good hybrid setup for 1000-1500 and have been really in between getting a used A7 iii or new a6600 or Nikon Z5 which are both 1000 new(Nikon is on sale..but i know in future i prefer sony system for lens options etc) A6400 is the only good used deal i see for around 600 these days. I saw Stuart Rodwell do some videos here on 6700 with sigma 56mm 1.4 and it's epic but i feel the price is over my budget for now Also saw the A7rii video - perfect photo camera, pity it's only good for photos
Im late to reply but hope you are happy with your decision if you made one. I don't think you will go wrong with any one of the cameras you listed. Even the Nikon has a bright future, Sony just got the big jump start on them. I found as I get older that you are better off buying what you really want and not settle. Even if it means being a bit patient. That said, you have to start somewhere and it will only grow with you. I have so much gear and cameras now I loose track of what I have. It has taken some of the fun out of it for me. I have new gear I haven't even touched yet....but I have been taken it really easy this summer to and took a break from making videos for youtube, but Ill be back soon. I have a lot to cover... Thanks for watching and that you found both videos. Glad they helped!
Thank you broo really thank youu ❤️
Glad you found it helpful, thats what it is there for. Sony can be a handful with all the lines and legacy equipment. I need to do another one of these to update further now too.
You got 500+ comments for your professional Knowledge of what you talking about and Down to the Earth great personality MS/Malcolm thank you for sharing bet late but late better than never 👌🏿😎
Thank you!, I appreciate the kind comment.
Hello. I offer professional video services primarily in the field of music videos and short video commercials. I have a Sony a7sIII, Sigma DG DN Art 24-70, DG DN Art 50mm 1.4, and Sigma DG DN Art 24mm 1.4. Since I've been receiving more event orders lately where they want both video and photo, I want to get a budget body on which to teach my wife. Since I always use the 24-70 on the a7sIII at events, I can let her use the 50mm on the a7rII. Do you think the a7rII is a suitable body for her to learn on, but still justifies the level to get paid for photo services?
Sorry I am late to reply, but I would get an A7iii for you wife and for yourself as a second body. It does a great job for video and works very easily as a photo body with a far better auto focus system.
Sure, here's the translation: --- Hello. I offer professional video services primarily in the field of music videos and short video commercials. Sorry for the late reply, been kicking back this summer from UA-cam, but Ill be back soon. If you made a decision on the A7Rii I'm sure you found it is a great choice for your situation. The only other camera I would recommend for you if you havn't pulled the trigger yet is the A7III. Its more modern auto focus will help your wife in the learning curve, but the A7rII will teach a lot too.
You say it's not made for video but you don't explain why.
At the time of making this video I was un happy with the video features of this camera compared to other models available.
Thanks! Having to replace a Sony ZV E-10 due to overheating in the Florida shade.
This or the sigma 18-50?
This lens gives you much more reach then the sigma, It will really come down to your needs, If you don't need the reach, the sigma would be a great choice.
So, how do we use the music features in it? I have the same thing as that, but I'm still confused and can't load mp3 music on it.
Can you help me and make a tutorial as well as possible?😊
Unfortunately I do not use this recorder anymore. So I can not elaborate on anything further with it.
