Zhangjiajie Forest National Park is in Hunan province, China. It features the beautiful landscape that inspired scenery in the movie Avatar.
The mountainous national park is in Hunan's Wulingyuan Scenic Area, approximately 30 kilometres (18.5 miles ) from the city of Zhangjiajie. Driving there typically takes between 30 and 40 minutes. However, no private vehicles are permitted inside of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.Instead, buses transfer visitors to points of interest.
The area is designated as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a UNESCO Global Geo Park. Quartz-sandstone forms pillars as high as skyscrapers. The region is often shrouded in mist, which adds to the mystique of the landscape.
The Bailong Elevator, the world's longest outdoor elevator, transports people from the valley floor to its top. Footpaths and scenic viewing areas along the ridge enable visitors to look out onto the stone pillars that inspired Avatar.
The park has food and drink stalls as well as restaurants, meaning that it's not a problem if you don't bring a picnic or your own snacks.
The Tianzi Mountain Cable Car and Yangjiajie Cable Car are ways of ascending into or descending out of the remarkable national park.
