  • Short video with some of the powerful words about diversity spoken during the flag-raising ceremony at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.
Fort Sumter was the location of the first battle of the American Civil War on April 12 1861. The Confederate bombardment during the Battle of Fort Sumter lasted for 34 hours. The first casualty of the war was Daniel Hough, who died during the flag-lowering ceremony after the Battle of Fort Sumter. Approximately 750,000 Americans died in the Civil War that raged for the next four years.
The US flag, also known as Old Glory or the Stars and Stripes, was next raised at Fort Sumter on February 18 1865.
Maj-Gen Robert Anderson, who surrendered the fort, raised the flag during a ceremony to mark the end of the war on 14 April 1865. That event is rarely discussed because President Lincoln was assassinated on the same day.
Fort Sumter National Monument is a remarkable place to visit. The historic site is in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.
These words, spoken during the flag raising ceremony at Fort Sumter struck me as powerful. They are about diversity, tolerance and what it means to be American.
