  • The Great Beguinage of Leuven, alternatively known as the Groot Begijnhof Leuven, was established in the early 13th century. It was the home to a community of pious women known as beguines.
Essentially home to a lay sisterhood, the community grew to around 360 members after the middle of the mid-17th century.
The béguinage, known as a begijnhof in the Flemish language, is one of 13 historic sites in Flemish Flanders that form part of the Flemish Béguinages UNESCO World Heritage Site. They count among the key cultural and historic landmarks in Belgium.
Owned by the KU Leuven, the university formed in 1425, the site provides accommodation to visiting professors, KE Leuven university staff and some Leuven University students.
The historic site is free to visit and covers an area of around three hectares. This video provides an overview of the historic site. If you enjoy heritage and are looking for alternatives to famous landmarks in Belgium, such as Leuven city hall and the Library Tower of Leuven, it's well worth visiting the Grand Beguinage, which is less than two kilometres south-west of the heart of the city.
