I'm making stuff outta trees over here!
I'm in my mid-40's and after several years working towards it, I'm fortunate to have a little bit of woodland to go have some fun on. I've done some basic home renos in the past and I've put together a small log storage shelter but nothing on the scale of the cabin I'm building here!
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!

My final trip to my cozy log cabin in the woods! Thanks everyone for joining me, take care!
After two years, the cabin is finished, or as finished as I'll be able to get it, at least.
A few things that have happened since the last episode:
- The roof is finished and shingled. This trip I add extra caulking around the skylights as well.
- New stairway and loft. I built this in the middle of summer and it was a pretty warm trip. My eldest came down a few weeks ago and we painted the ceiling white to bounce the sunlight a bit. On this trip I finish off a bit of a landing area at the top of the stairs.
- No more tarps or plastic sheeting ANYWHERE! Oh, except those dangly flaps for the wood bin. They're supposed to be there.
- The hearth and chimney have been rebuilt and now includes a grill/oven. This was a big job, I demolished the entire top of the hearth and rebuilt it because it just wasn't drawing air properly. I learned a lot building this the first and second times!
This is my last video for the channel, unfortunately I can't keep my land. What a fun project this cabin has been! I'm very sad to see it go, but I really hope whoever buys the property intends to keep it and use it.
Thanks very much for joining me for this, take care!

Hanging out with my puppy at my log cabin in the woods. Chopping firewood and cleaning up a creek.

Now that the worst of the winter weather is done, Mocha and I head down for a camping weekend at the cabin. I'm completely out of firewood, and it's time to start getting some proper wood piles built. Previously, I cleaned up the moss on the front, but I still need to do 3 more walls of the cabin. It's actually not a project I like doing at all, so I'm spreading it out over a few trips! Getting...
Working on a bridge, kitchen drain, roof supports and I make a holiday wreath. Cozy log cabin build!

The second half of what ended up being a very busy weekend. I add some extra support beams for the roof in case there's a heavy snow fall. This is about half of the supports I'm going to put in, but I have to leave some screw driving for another trip! I install a kitchen drain! This is a test with a piece of hose to see if it works in concept. I will be replacing the sink with a nicer one and p...

In this episode I finish the wall surrounding the hearth, but the weather is too cold to do more mortar work. The last gap between the hearth and the log wall will need to wait until spring. The hearth itself also needs more work done. It leaks smoke in a few spots and the front opening is too tall. Smoke pours out the front and fills the cabin. I'm going to get that fixed next time, or I won't...
Working on a stone hearth with hot water tank and stovetop. Building a cozy log cabin in the woods!

Mocha and I spend a very rainy weekend indoors working on the hearth at our cozy log cabin in the woods. It's complete, but I ran out of supplies before I could build out the wall above and around it. If I don't get another visit with good weather I'll have to think of a temporary fix until the spring. The hearth has a stove top, a hot water tank with a spigot, a drain at the back in case rain ...
Building a hearth/fireplace, finishing the roof and installing skylights. My cozy log cabin build.

Hello! On this trip I got my roof construction finished and installed the skylights. I have to put shingles on, but that can be done during the winter. I also get started on my hearth. First step was to get rid of that very lousy and very temporary wall from behind the wood stove! If the weather can cooperate for another visit or two I'll be able to stay warm this year with a nice toasty fire. ...

The roof has taken ages! During these last two trips down I finally got the front and back walls built as high as they are going and trimmed to shape for the roofline. The triangle gaps at the top will be screened off for bugs but left open for airflow in the summer. I'll probably put some insulation in them during the winter though! I installed all of the planks I had available and framed in t...
Starting to fill in the roof using wood planks. Beautiful day building a cozy log cabin in the woods

Mocha and I are back to camp after we skipped out on the hottest/buggiest part of the summer! A buddy had a big stack of pallets I was able to break down and I'm using them to fill in the roof. I'm glad I don't have to go looking for 300 branches to fill it in! The boards are already a great length, over an inch thick, very solid wood! I ended up drilling pilot holes to make sure I got a good a...
Starting an outhouse and adding more roof structure. Building a cozy log cabin along with my puppy!

Gorgeous weather this time as Mocha and I get started building a proper outhouse. I still have to build walls, a little floor, a roof. You know all the luxurious parts. A door. But it's getting there, and it's something I've never done before. There's always so much to learn! I get the final 2 main beams in for the barn roof. Next time down I'm hoping to put in all of the various supporting pie...

I work on the front and back walls which make up the second story/loft of the cabin. I get to the point where I can put in the last two long roof beams before I run out of daylight, chainsaw power, and momentum! This cozy log cabin in the woods is really taking shape. I'm almost at a point where I can stop nailing logs into place. That's going to be good for morale! Thanks for watching, I hope ...

After taking care of a few small jobs around the campsite, I remove the tarps and temporary floating roof. Now that winter's done (and it was 25C) I can start installing a barn style roof with a loft area for the kids to sleep. Mocha and I ended up sleeping under the stars, it was such a beautiful weekend. Thanks for watching, I hope you'll check out the previous episodes in the build!
Building an Owl House!

I made an owl house I'm going to install near the log cabin I'm building in the woods. It's made out of a few old planks I had in the garage that are 10" and 12". Before I hang it I'm going to add some blobs of caulking behind the bark sheets. I'm a little concerned about the wind blowing them off and I want to add a bit more support. I'm also planning to add a branch inside to help owlets reac...

Hello! Mocha and I enjoyed some beautiful weather at the cabin in the woods. Now that there's a door and a lock on the cabin, I moved everything out of the small storage shelter I've been using this past year. It did the job better than a tent, but it's nice to have room to stand up in the new cabin! Mocha and I went for a hike and then she let me add a stove top to the kitchen. It's hooked up ...

Even though it's still a bit cold, Mocha joins me for a weekend at the cozy log cabin in the woods! I install the wood stove I built from a party store helium tank. I've never worked with metal before but I can't wait to try something else, now! It was such a fun project. Building a DIY wood stove from a helium/propane tank. No welding! Great for a log cabin or tiny home

Hi! I made a wood stove for the log cabin I'm building in the woods. It's made out of a helium tank which is just a little smaller than a regular BBQ propane tank. This is my first time working with metal and I had a lot of fun with this project! I don't have the tools or experience to weld, so the whole thing had to be done with nuts and bolts! The trickiest spot was the chimney, the hole had ...

Hello 🙋♂️. Good job 👍. I like your cabin
Thanks very much!
Eerie... Just yesterday I was thinking about you and wondering whether you abandoned the project. Glad to see it wasn't the case. Congrats on finishing the cabin!
Thanks very much for watching! This was my final trip down to my land and it's going to be my last episode. Take care!
Welcome back! Missed you, looking foreward to more!
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately this is my last upload for the channel and I have to sell my property. I wanted to have a last view of how the cabin looked at the end, though!
Great to see more progress on the build, welcome back!
Thank you brother! It's been a while since uploading but I was still making progress on the place!
Glad to see you back!!!
I'm back one last time, yup! Take care, thanks for watching!
You’re a genius I need to go to welding school 😂
Cool idea, but spend the $10 and buy an angle grinder from harbor freight. It would’ve cut the build time at least in half.
Can you describe the materials in the words ? That way I can buy them without messing up
Excellent!!
Does it matter what size the chimney diameter is?
Бедолага ни сварки ни болгарки
Heh, nope, I don't!
Cool videos, cool log cabin, cool dog. Subscribed from here in New Zealand.
👍 living in the Log Cabin off the grid. Thank you for video
Thanks very much for watching!
That book is hilarious haha! Was that far Cry 3 Vaas I spotted?
Heh, it was! Finally got the next episode posted up, as well.
Maybe fire cloth between the door strips
How much for you to make me one ?
Did in action 😂 nut good result
Just built one myself using a 19kg propane tank absolutely no welding involved and I can remove and refit the flue. Made it to use in my garden or on camping trips
Are you trying to get someone killed? Please take Propane out of the title. Helium is inert, lighter than air and will evacuate the tank. Propane is highly flammable, heavier than air & will pool at the bottom of any tank for years, and still explode with minimal ignition.
Hey buddy I got a spare old hole saw for ya and I'll even let ya use my sawzall
Cabin is looking good, are you in Ontario?
I wouldn’t have cleared a trail. The harder it is to get there the better chance people will leave you alone.
It's private property, so hopefully everyone will leave me alone regardless! I don't have the courage to stealth-build a cabin!
as someone who's making a small cabin to live in this is honestly an inspiration. thank you!
Thanks very much! I have no metalwork experience, but figured as long as I could stick to nuts and bolts instead of welding it would work out. Very approachable project for beginners like me!
Time for a new pair of gloves! 😅
Yeah, they've been through some work this year!
Hello 🤝. Good job. Nice shelter 👍🛖🌲
Thanks very much! It's going to be a much more comfortable winter than last year!
Did you just repurpose your blow up bed as a draught excluder? Where did you sleep? 🤣 Stove is working a treat!
It had a hole in it, I was using it to cover a wood pile! The stove is great, but the water tank leaks and needs a bit of patching up before I can use it. For a first go at masonry I'm really happy overall!
Talk about patience! Turned out nice though, and perfect idea for someone without a welder!
Thanks very much for checking out the video!
@@WoodlyDad don't say thanks,,,,it was a pleasure,,, thanks to YOU 👍👍👏👏😊💯
Nice work, looks awesome. Really didn’t catch the water tank function. Was that the skinny metal thing you put in standing up? How do you put water in or fill up? I take it that you drain water from it on the left from your pipe work that you showed. Thanks for sharing!
Yes the metal pan forms the side of the water tank. Unfortunately I'm missing a clip where I formed the bottom of the tank and installed the drain pipe. There's an opening on the left side where I can pour water in from the top. Next time I go down the mortar will have set and I can give it a test run. Then I can show it action!
@@WoodlyDad oh, ok, gotcha. What a clever idea. Thanks again for your efforts in sharing. ATB
That is nothing like I pictured it was going to be! It's phenomenal, so when you light the fire it not only provides warmth but heats your metal stove top and water in the tank? Can't wait to see it in use once all dried out mate.
Thanks very much! I'm looking forward to having a hot water tank. Washing your hands with cold water... yeah, I've had enough of that!
I used to love soldering copper, but it’s all PEX for me now
I haven't had a chance to work with pex, yet. It was nice to break out the old plumbing toolbag again for a little project!
Hello. A very interesting stone stove project. Good job 👍
Thanks very much, it was a great learning experience!
Wow, pretty impressive imo. Just kinda getting interested in some masonry too, for a fireplace. Any chance you could list the various materials you used in video? I’m newer than you are! Lol Subbed and interested in following along. Thanks for your efforts in sharing your videos.
Sure thing, this is my first time doing anything like this! I had a bag of cement mixed with rocks that I used on the base just to get rid of it. I'm using mortar on the rocks and filling the middle with gravel and all purpose sand. Each "row" of rocks took 1 bag of mortar and 2 bags of sand.
@@WoodlyDad Oh, thanks kindly. Unbelievable how many bags for each row! You did great. Have fun and enjoy on the rest of it. Hope you post as it goes on. ATB
❤❤❤
I was just thinking last night that I hadn't watched a video form you in a little while, and now this popped up in my list and see I've missed 3 previous videos. I guess I know what I'm doing after work tonight!
Heh, I also slowed down a little over the hottest/buggiest part of the summer, so the episodes were more spread out. But I'm hoping to get down a lot over the winter this year. Lots more to do! Thanks very much for watching!
@@WoodlyDad All caught up now, looking forward to seeing the hearth build! Loved the skylights too.
You must have maxed out forearm endurance because manually screwing in all those screws is impressive. I replaced a few door hinges the other day and my grip strength was shot after a few haha
Heh, it's better than hammering 8" spikes into logs, so I'll take it!
@@WoodlyDad can't wait to see how the fireplace fully Integrates when finished.
Hello. You are building a cozy house. The skylights are great, I also made a window in my log house
Thanks, it's nice to look up at the stars from bed! Your skylight lets in a bunch of light, eh? Awesome!
Love all aspects of your stove.. I too am cautious of fire and gases. Never in 1000 years would if thought of gravel between mesh screens!!! Bravo!
Heh, thanks. Turns out it was overkill! Most of the heat is lost to the air between the chimney and the piece of duct holding the gravel back. The rocks barely got any heat and the whole thing could have been done smaller and neater. But I learned a lot! That wall is temporary and I'm planning to take it out and start the fireplace soon. Take care!
Humm seems Mocha is not as enthusiastic about the cabin project
Okay come clean… you are Super Dad aren’t you? Fancy fry pan flipping… Ricer for pasta… skylights in cabin…
I'm doing what I do, happy to bring you folks along for the trip! Thanks for watching!
The Cabins coming along great that food look pretty damn good too 😊
I'm having a lot of fun, thanks very much for joining me!
Hello 🤝. Good building. Cool device for making spaghetti 🍝
Thanks, very much! It's a spaetzle press if you want to go looking for one. They're fun!
The land you have there is a paradise! The cabin is mighty impressive and I love the manual drill, such a good idea considering no access to power, I would have realised that too late haha
Thanks, buddy! It's getting there. I have to start on my hearth before winter, the nights are already starting to have a chill!
That’s clever! I’ve got 2 questions if that’s ok? 1. What size is the helium tank? 2. Is it safe to work on the tank, by just releasing the helium as you did? I know propane tanks need all kinds of extra precautions, eg flushing with water.
Hi, thanks for watching! It's just a little smaller than a standard bbq propane tank. Helium doesn't burn or explode like propane. Much safer to handle!
I was wandering the same thing today! That’s why I googled how to do this. I was scared to just cut into it! Lol thank you
She is coming along nicely can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the roof & build

Zo creatief. ❤️👍
I enjoy your videos, very relaxing to watch. By the way, not sure why you made that change to the door at the end.
I was looking at it and thought if it was going to sag, the board in the center wouldn't hold it up, it was in the same direction as the sag. But if I switch it around it would help support the door better.
