The Raid
Based loosely on the various skirmishes that occurred during the winter of 1775-1776 outside of Boston, "The Raid" aims to portray period skirmishing tactics to the high level of skill British units were able to operate at during this time. While no documented skirmish follows the exact timeline of this video, numerous smaller engagements are recorded from this period, such as the Skirmish at Phipps Farm (Nov 9, 1775), Skirmish at Lechmere Point (Nov 9, 1775), the Burning of Falmouth (Nov 18, 1775), the Raid on Charlestown (Jan 8, 1776), the Skirmish at Dorchester (Feb 14, 1776), and the Skirmish at Nook's Hill (Mar 8, 1776), along with more throughout the siege, including many that did not take place during the "winter months" we're attempting to portray in this video. These examples, and moreso those during The Forage War in New Jersey a year later, lend validity to practicing and executing small unit tactics as demonstrated here, allowing us to properly "reenact" engagements at the appropriate scale. Enjoy!
His Majesty's Tenth Regiment of Foot in America is a historically re-created infantry unit formed to portray the service of the British Army during the American War for Independence.
Composed of three types of soldier, Grenadiers-typically larger men who are used as shock troops, a company of Light infantry, generally smaller, more agile men--capable of maneuvering in the dense wilderness to skirmish or flank the enemy, and a battalion company--a company of regular soldiers, capable of mass volleys and were the heart of the army and are trained in both Grenadier and Light Infantry tactics. We also have a company of Music, who provide music and commands to the army. Last but certainly not least, a Corps of Civilian Volunteers--who provide food to the regiment during encampments and accurately portray civilian and camp life of the 18th century. Each is open for recruitment. The members of the Tenth are accurately uniformed, equipped, and trained in 18th-century military drill and life so that we appear in public as members of the British Army would have in 1775. A revolutionary war uniform video with ww2 era soundscape from the planes. It does blend interestingly as our opposing sides here fought that one as Allies. Despite everything we found our way way back to each other this time as independent countries. Just a thought that came to my mind. [Brit here]

    Very well done. On;y negative comment I have is that the soldiers were giving distances in meters, which was not developed as a unit of measure until the 1790's, a number of years after this presentation takes place.

    The metric system was not created until after the French Revolution. Distances should be stated in miles not kilometers.

    • @HM10thFoot
      @HM10thFoot 5 днів тому

      Hi Charlie, this is a good point that has been brought to our attention! Our response to the other comments: This was an editing oversight on our part. Historically, the British would have used the imperial system during this time (feet, yards, etc.). The metric system wasn’t adopted in the British Army until the 20th century. In contrast, the modern U.S. military uses the metric system, and several members at this event, including the one who led it, are in the military. This led to the incorrect use of the metric system in a slip. We hope you enjoyed the video otherwise, and thanks for watching!

    • @HM10thFoot
      @HM10thFoot 5 днів тому

      Hi there, great question! Yes, ‘squad’ is a historically documented term referring to a group of 6-8 soldiers. It represents the smallest formally designated unit! This is from a period text that describes training outside Boston: “The Regiments to Exersise every fine day; | and to be frequently practised in firing ball, singly, by | squads, and platoons (particularly the young soldiers) in | all directions.” Hope this answers your question! Thanks for watching!

  • @MrYfrank14
    @MrYfrank14 6 днів тому

    This appears to be modern military tactics. I do not claim to be an expert in this time period but I do believe they would have approced the house like that and hugged the wall. They would have formed a line and marched up to the house. I have never tried it, but I would guess the rifles are too long to hug the wall while you go around a corner.

    • @HM10thFoot
      @HM10thFoot 5 днів тому

      Hi there, this is a good point. British soldiers were taught to “cover themselves with trees, large stones, broken enclosures, *old houses* or any strong feature that presents itself upon the face of a country” -George Townsend, 1772. While we don’t have exact tactics on how they would have maneuvered around a house, British Soldiers were highly intelligent and would not subject themselves to unnecessary danger. This is our interpretation, however there is no way to know exactly how they would have moved in a fluid dynamic environment such as this. Hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching!

  • @MrYfrank14
    @MrYfrank14 6 днів тому

    There is no one to shoot at or advance on , but they fire and advance. They fixed bayonets just to run with them to the next postion? Was this common in the British Army at this time? I thought all countries used bayonets for stabbing people.

    • @HM10thFoot
      @HM10thFoot 5 днів тому

      Hi there, Great question! First, there was an opposing force-you can briefly see him when we break the treeline, as well as firing from behind cover as we advance toward the barn. Historically, battles were fought with bayonets fixed from start to finish, as soldiers couldn’t afford to waste precious time fixing them in the midst of combat. For the sake of the video, we fixed them at the very beginning of the battle, which is still more accurate than fixing them just before a final assault. Hope this helps clarify, and thanks for watching!

They may have lost the revolutionary war in America but it was after a century of investing money and might developing America until they taxed a little too much. They did stand strong protecting North of the American line sacrificing British Soldiers lives to protect what we now know as Canada. Three cheers for the Brits. To bad they were not here to protect us from the Marxist Trudeau and his Liberal cabal that systematically destroyed Canada. Hi James, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Believe it or not, reenactors don’t use fake British accents because we actually don’t know how soldiers sounded back then. The earliest recordings of Victorian English dialect are so different from modern English that some argue it’s actually closer to American dialect. Because of this, we avoid guessing and simply speak in our normal voices. I hope this clears things up, and thanks again for watching!
