October Reading Recap and a Book Haul
That is an insane package 😮
Excellent mail haul David! I especially liked the Wenzel illustrated edition of the Hobbit! Very nice.
Wow, what a great box of goodies!
Lovely haul and it’s good to see you
Some great books there. Happy reading!
Fantastic! Just a bit jealous of some of these. 😂 -T
Not gonna show us any of it???
This was the best review of the book I saw on YT. Thanks
Thumbs for the review, sub for the GMT stuff in the background.
Congratulations on the review and the channel! If I may, I would like to make a recommendation. My wife is a translator and recently translated a renowned book of Brazilian classic gothic literature called "Night at the Tavern" by Álvares de Azevedo (one of Brazil's great artists, who never saw his work published as he died very young, at the age of 20). If you would like to read it, it is available on Kindle Unlimited and has strong influences from Lord Byron. Thank you!
Had to watch him at 1.75 speed.
Oof, I’m 12 days behind on this video. But my recommendation for your top 100 vids is to make an 11th video about the “forgotten books” or the books that should’ve been on the list, but you couldn’t put them there for whatever reason. You might see something similar to that from me in a couple months once they get that far in the series. -T
I found this anthology underwhelming. The follow up was somewhat better. Purple wage seemed like word salad to me.
Great list 👏 I can’t imagine hating The Silmarillion but props to you for revisiting it. I’m so happy to see someone who clearly engages with Tolkien in a way I can relate to. I truly believe that you cannot have that relationship with Tolkiens work without having a an appreciation of classic literature, and having an appreciation for Tolkien is a gateway to appreciating classic literature.
Nice box set! I need to get a copy of the Riverside. Good luck with your projects!
I'm too late for your vacation, but I have to comment anyway. You need to run, not walk, to your nearest bookstore and get some more Heinlein. If you can find a copy of *Expanded Universe* grab it and don't let anyone see it--I can't find one anywhere! If you're not hooked by then, well, hang it up. I can't save you. And I just found you, so this may be redundant, but get some Asimov. The last Foundation book he wrote (I'm wracking my brain for the title, but can't come up with it; it's about the start of the Foundation) has a list of what order to read his books in. If you haven't read them, you'll thank me. And if you want a book that seems silly at first, but is the best book on leadership I've ever read, grab *Phule's Company* by Robert Asprin. Again I've just found you, so maybe you've read these already, but if you haven't, consider these for your TBR list.
Great cover on the bloodstone book. Best wishes and happy reading.
'Bloodstone'!!! Can't go wrong there! Glad you liked it David!
Good to hear you enjoyed your books and your vacation!
Bloodstone! What a great beach read!
It really is!
howdy big dog. I'd recommend you pick up a Norton edition of the Complete Works of Shakespeare. The introductory essays offer a great deal of insight and there are so many useful footnotes.
That sounds like a perfectly reasonable challenge for you. Me, I’d probably need 3 years for Tolkien, with nothing else. 🤣 -T
Wow! These are some serious challenges!
The History of Middle Earth. Wow that looks daunting! How does this series compare to the Silmarillion? I look forward to your review of those three volumes!
Wow that’s a great box set about Middle Earth!! Looking forward to hearing your progress on that. A complete deep dive on Shakespeare is ambitious too!! Nice video David. I’m also rereading the Faffhd and Gray Mouser stories and loving them.
Laudably ambitious, David. Good luck!
Yes- Shakey!
Read Emily Wilson’s translations for The Iliad and Odyssey!!! So goood
I've only read Frankenstein, which is an excellent pick. I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos!
Interesting what people choose. Got Middlemarch on my tbr list. Best wishes. Happy reading to you!
Snow Crash, Middlemarch, some of my favorites on here! Am looking forward to following along.
There are a few books here I need to get to. I can’t wait to see the rest of this list.
David, one other note ~ We're doing a top-10 Movie list again this Friday. Historical Dramas. Please feel free to join in. And apologies if I already relayed this message. I'm losing track of who all I've contacted!
Now I must know more about the criterion! Is there a Voxer group/chat?
Yes! Another person doing this. -T
Great call on the Illiad! I need to try and re-attempt Snow Crash. I started it decades ago and wound up stopping...not sure exactly why! And Amber in the top 100!!! Good video David.
Great list! I'm especially fond of The City and the City and, also, Snow Crash. I'm looking forward to the next installments in this series.
11:44 I just have bought this book, The History of the Hobbit, and is the thickest so far, lol, I peak at the intro, and this book is deeeep into the influences of the Hobbit, ... I'm reading the Return of the Shadow yet.
I choose Heinlein & Burroughs. 2 of my all time favorites. If you like Burroughs, I strongly recommend Outlaw of Torn.
Bloodstone, by the batrachian Rillyti of Kranor-Rill!
Florida. Flying fish, yes. Humming birds, yes, Mosquitoes, no. Alligators, no.
I'm hoping we miss all sightings of those last two items. With you 100% there.
Amen! He’s returned and with a Tolkien video nonetheless. Indeed, a good collection several that I don’t yet have, and many that I haven’t read. But I intend to someday. -T
I think I've read all except the History of Middle-earth series at least once, which means I definitely need to climb that 12-volume mountain sooner rather than later.
Have a great time in Florida mate. I really enjoyed Camouflage when I read it. I'm on a mission to read more Haldeman too before the year's end. Looking forward to your thoughts on these books.
I need a whole lot more Haldeman on my shelf. I'm hoping to find a good set of the Marsbound trilogy at some point to give that series a shot!
Bloodstone!
I was pretty certain about where your vote would fall!
I vote for the Heinlein and the Haldeman!
I bet that would make for a great pairing by two outstanding authors!
All sound like excellent selections. I would choose Methuselah's Children and Nightwings. I hope you enjoy your vacation! Save travels!
Thank you my friend! Hope you are doing well!
Bloodstone!!! (and I'd love to hear your thoughts on Methuselah's Children)
The Haldeman and Silverberg. How can you go wrong?
I pick "Bloodstone" and the great "Nightwings"! And I feel obliged to point out that you can bring 10,000 alternates if you packed a fully-stocked Kindle ...
That Kindle will surely be coming as well, but I figured this as a good excuse to chip away at a few paperbacks on my shelf as well!
Plenty in your library to keep you out f mischief there. Best wishes with what you choose to read. I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently reading the Count of Monte Cristo. I might be some time! Happy reading to you.
It has been awhile, good to see you back David! And thank you for the shout out! (That's one heck of Tolkien collection! I have that first copy of the Silmarillion. That's a good one)
It feels good to be back!
