Rockin' Reindeer Christmas - VHS Review and Channel Update
24:05 - Channel Update (TL;DW - Fewer videos next year, but weirder and more thorough ones)
For the past five years, I've used Christmas to look at things that inadvertently had some kind of Christmasy meaning to me. This time, I'm, uh...not doing that.
Instead, let's look at some harmless, dumb fun and try to take our minds off of everything. Join me this month to celebrate a cheap, silly, threadbare cash-in of a Christmas special produced by Good Housekeeping (yes, that one) featuring a statistically significant portion of both Timmy The Tooth's AND Pee-Wee's Playhouse's creative teams: 1990's Rockin' Reindeer Christmas.

Mr. Henry's Wild & Wacky World | VHS Review
Переглядів 5602 місяці тому
This is a disaster. I've reviewed a lot of thin/nonexistent shows in my time on Too Many Tapes, but they all at least felt like there was SOME effort involved. This thing, though... This is one of the most cynical vanity projects I've ever encountered - a totally misguided mess that fails to deliver on any one of its goals. It's not fun, it's not funny, it's not engaging, and it doesn't do its ...

CW: brief mention of self-harm Presented in Glitch-O-Vision™ (out of necessity) Phantom of the Paradise turns 50 this year. It doesn't feel it. In fact, it feels timeless and relevant simultaneously - most classics do. This collaboration between a young Brian De Palma and singer/songwriter/actor Paul Williams is one of the most stylish and fascinating musicals of the seventies, even if it was a...
Corny 3: Even Cornier - Tall Tales and Lost Loot | VHS Review

Whatever you do - DON'T ask what's in the mystery chili. The Capstone Entertainment Corny videos are a bit of a mixed bag, but Tall Tales & Lost Loot, which sees the return of original Corny actor Richard Steven Horvitz (Invader ZIM, Angry Beavers, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy) and original director Sean McNamara (Spare Parts, Even Stevens, Reagan), is surprisingly good, and features ...
Baby Huey's Great Easter Adventure - VHS Review - Too Many Tapes

Watch the film on my second channel: ua-cam.com/video/MH8y_6AT9Y4/v-deo.html Baby Huey is a nightmare in Harvey Comic and animated form, but somehow even worse as a live-action character. This slapdash feature-length monstrosity from director/actor Stephen Furst is... a little bit more, though. When you push beyond the surface-level aesthetic unpleasantness of it, you notice its cast is stacked...

#UHF #weirdalyankovic #weirdal ALERT: I do, in fact, consume a Twinkie Weiner Sandwich on-camera in this one. Make of that what you will. UHF turns 35 this year. I do too. Though Weird Al's cinematic aspirations were met with a resounding thud in 1989, his classic entry into the Slobs Vs. Snobs genre of the 80s manages to live on and thrive. So on this episode of Too Many Tapes, grab your spatu...

#madameweb #hewasintheamazonwithmymomwhenshewasresearchingspidersrightbeforeshedied Sure, the beginning of the year is usually a dump zone for things the studios want us to forget as quickly as humanly possible, but Madame Web - Sony's latest foray into their Spider-Man-less live-action SpiderVerse, will always be remembered as one of the worst - and most compellingly awful - films of all time....
Colby's Missing Memory (VHS Review)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.7 місяців тому
Colby 2: Colby's Missing Memory was an odd waystation in a long line of attempts to make Colby The Computer a Christian Kid's Media phenomenon. It used the Psalty model (write simple musicals a church can produce on the cheap) and tried to reverse engineer everything that worked (?) about the Rettinos' wacky, haunting blue menace. This feels like a calling card, though - a desperate plea for so...
Going off on Tangents with 'Time Chasers' Director David Giancola
Переглядів 6978 місяців тому
A few years ago, I made a video about one of my favorite B-Movies that Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever covered - Time Chasers. Made in the early 90s for $150,000 by a 19-year-old first-time filmmaker, the movie is a joyous, earnestly silly, and shockingly effective experience that uses its limited budget and enormous ambition to create something that has captured the imagination of cult-movie...

Big Trouble: The Last 90s Movie

Big Trouble came out on April 5, 2002, but it marks the hard end of the 1990s. Delayed because of the September 11th attacks, this silly little comedy about a plane hijacking and a nuclear suitcase bomb was basically scrubbed from the public consciousness. It's not streaming. It's not on blu-ray (anymore), and it's basically forgotten, even though it's filled with stars like Tim Allen, Rene Rus...

Wait a minute, this doesn't look like the Gerbert we all know and love (?). It's actually the pilot episode that launched Gerbert's stratospheric rise to the tip-top of Christian children's media in the late 80s, and it's maybe a bit rough around the edges. Yes, before the strange oblong pumpkin-chicken-nugget look, Gerb was just your average bright-orange muppet-looking thing, and even in this...

My eyes opened wide when I saw Flying Tiger planes in the trailers. It was in my eyes like a war movie set in a Metropolis from another dimension. It was a mixed metaphor wish list of the way things could be on screen for certain imaginative "nerds" that feel trapped in our own dimension. Another person wrote "nerds" here before me and I get their point. I understood what the different elements in the film were alluding to. It came out of left field and for that reason I highly respected it. True creativity rarely has mass appeal and it does not have to be "complex". Too bad. I loved the movie. That said I don't agree with some of your "film studies" analysis. I don't think you should apologize for it either. Some of the reasons I enjoyed the movie is because I read a lot about WW II when I was in Elementary. This movie has a fun "intellectual" appeal to people who know why the director added certain elements and put them together. It makes sense if you know what to look at and focus your imagination on, so you may almost enter the Sky Captain universe. It's the most intellectual anti-intellectual thing I've ever seen. I never knew it was groundbreaking in terms of technology etc. I'm glad I know it now. Thanks for the video.

I haven't subscribed for even a year yet but I remember about 6 months ago finding and binging all your content and just enjoying everything you've made. I know I'm not the only one who understands when you need to take a break. This is something you started because it was a passion of yours, one of the reasons I was so drawn to your content to begin with, and being forced to make content and having deadlines, even ones that are self imposed, can cause that passion to dwindle. So take.your time, and when you find you're ready we'll be here.

You said that Don and Herb from Beakman's World gave you Statler and Waldorf vibes. But there is one very important difference. Don and Herb actually like Beakman's World, and they say it's their favorite show. Statler and Waldorf are classic hecklers and often state that it's like a torture to watch the show.

I'm so torn on this film. So many elements are exceptional, and so many are awful. The editing of the film betrays the early 2000s origin -- it's manic, cutting from one image to the next before they have a moment to settle, and it completely clashes with the classic serial atmosphere they're going for. Every shot looks fake, and not in a good or old fashioned way. The digital effects and bloom make everything look smudgy and reminds you more of mid-2000s commercials or music videos than film serials. I say this as somebody who loves pulp and old serials -- the film is both charming and tiring to watch. BUT. Underneath all those ugly effects and bloom is spectacular lighting and strong shot compositions. The actors all do well with a script that hits the pedestrian lows and grand highs of the stories that inspired it. The soundtrack is exactly what was necessary -- sounding like a classic hero's march while also being new. Beyond that, it's a daring film -- what it did was simultaneously nostalgic and deeply bold. The director makes choices that many today imitate, and the film has such a unique design flair that even twenty years later, there's no other film like it. It's a film that would be a prime candidate for a remake with a slightly steadier editing hand, now that technology has improved so much. It's a diamond in the rough, and despite all my reservations I wish there were more of it and they'd gotten more tries at the concept.

They should not have got rid of Rosario Dawson. That was a HORRIBLE decision. It puts a giant shadow on Clerks 2. I wish that Randall had more compassion that Elias communicated to him at the hospital (without him needing to be told it). That would've been an a better ending to show their bond before passing without it being last minute. However, the movie helped me deal with grief and potentially losing my father so i liked that aspect.

I'm one of the names on that patreon list. I joined a couple months ago, I think around October, but I've been watching since January of last year after watching The Dudley dumpling episode. You've been a peek Into a childhood that Dodged me completely. I think I've mentioned this a few times but I grew up jewish, and our art and even children's media tends to look very different than a lot of the Christian ones you cover. Watching you has been like an archaeologist uncovering a past that I never knew existed for so many children out there. And you helped me find stuff like the glitch art scene and everything is terrible, the latter of which has become one of my favorite kooky little art collectives. I'm looking forward to next year. Slower output, yes, but what you've described as ambitious and interesting. And it certainly makes me want to pick up a puppet and a camera and do some weird stuff about old childhood tapes that I have in my garage somewhere. PS: do you have a PO box? If so there's something I want to send you at some point. Totally understand if you don't want to receive packages from subscribers though.

Apologies to comment again but I'm just reaching the end. Rest assured my bell will reman on. We both understand the strange wonder of VHS and the totally unique brand of fear their contents can engender. While I love the sleazy christian kids tapes, I'm sure you've found many tapes that contain dark, infinitely more terrifying things. Artifacts, crudely chained against ribbons of decaying tape, like the last crestfallen ghosts of a time long passed. The depths of VHS are murky and unknowable but I hope you can find inspiration in viewing and sharing tapes more of this nature. It actually sounds like that might be more in tune with your original vision. I'll be around but I feel like I must say thanks for all your hard work so far!

Also: this was put under my last comment. I took it out and slapped it here, by itself, since the tone is very different. Hope you read it…. Thanks for being genuine. I wish I would have found your channel years ago. You’re a great host, just perfect levels of fun, sarcasm, absurdity and seriousness, when each tone is appropriate. I’m glad you have a job that you deserve. I feel bad about not donating a thing so far. No problem here doing things I enjoy for work (except not often enough right now), and I finally have one credit card that I can actually use. Unlike you, I spent far too much time, in my 50 years, f’cking off, stuck in my own world of birds, butterflies and pretty flowers. Once again, I jumped off the ride, and vow to act maturely; not sure how much on track I’ll stay this time around. I have no clue why I just wrote all this to you. As stupid as this sounds, I got a little bummed out as soon as I read the title/ description of your video in my feed. Had two (things) this month that jolted me back to reality, and such, so moody I am. I’ll stop being selfish here. Do what you think is right. It all makes perfect sense. Put out some more great content when you’re ready. I look forward to it. In the meantime, please don’t do anything irrational…like deleting any videos, especially ‘Nathaniel the Grublet’. I love it, probably my favorite video on the channel. The future continues to grow more uncertain. If I can’t fall back to a little grublin’ to brighten the day, things would truly suck.

Thank you for watching. This project is a world of birds, butterflies and flowers in a way. There are other more productive and societally useful things I could probably be doing with my time, but I love the opportunity to examine this particularly cursed wedge of media and history, and I’m glad anybody gets any enjoyment out of it. Never feel bad for not donating. I don’t make it for the money - I make it for the community. I’ll never delete any videos, btw. They represent a journey, a timeline that documents my maturation and I kind of love that about it. The early stuff is raw and shows its influences on its sleeve. The newer stuff (hopefully) shows my growth and confidence in my own voice and point of view. If I was ever going to delete anything, it’d be that Christopher Guest video nobody likes, but I stubbornly stand behind it. Going forward the project itself remains mostly the same - it’s not a pivot so much as an expansion with more comfortable timetables.

Wait, it was produced by Good Housekeeping? I hope this special is up to the same high standards, and ‘seal of approval’ as the colorful, full-page paintings featured in their magazine during World War Two. This is a tall order for a mere Christmas production, especially compared to the delightful ‘True Towel Tales: #1’ artwork featured in the August 1943 edition. Check it out online. Its full of American pride. For my gay brethren, nothing less than pure delight. It does exclude crocodiles, which, I guess I’m ok with.

That Tang ad at the end of that tape reminds me of how some of the FHE releases of the classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials have animated ads for Glade candles before and after the feature. I also have a DVD copy of Rudolph that plays a random Pillsbury sugar cookie commercial with the Doighboy right before the special. I can’t think of those specials without being reminded of poor quality scented candles and those cutout cookie dough logs with the cute pictures on them. Anyway, thank you so much for all of the wonderful and thoughtful videos you have released over the years, Corey. How interesting. Ive had a dream in 2017, around my birthday, approximately one year before i died, where i watched a movie of my life, beginning to end, and as people appeared in the "movie" they walked into the theatre, and as they left the film for good, they left the theatre too. The only one who stayed in there, for the entire film of my life, was the woman i love, who i never got to be with. We are friends, however we have never dated. That part of this video, where they were in the theatre, hit me in a piece of my heart i forgot was there.
