- The Brendan-aissance begins! Also, right at the top, I know I mispronounced Brendan Fraser's name like 15 times in this video. Sorry about that.
George of the Jungle is a breezy delightful little family rom-com of the variety that simply does not get produced anymore. It's lovely, and works largely on the back of its fleet-footed script and the sheer, white-hot charisma of its young star - Brendan Fraser.
It made over $100 million dollars, but has seemingly been largely forgotten, lost to the streaming content hole that is Disney+ and locked behind the weird, confusing Disney Movie Club for physical media.
On this month's Too Many Tapes, let's take a look at this 1997 cult classic and appreciate the star-making turn of one of America's finest and (until now) least-celebrated movie stars.

Yep, I got Brendan Fraser's last name wrong a billion times in this video. Feel free to drag me under this comment.
Fray-Zer!!! 😂
'Hey baby, I hear the blues a calling...'
Brendan Fraser plays his characters exactly how they need to be played, and you can't help but enjoy his performance. Even in more dramatic movies, dude is such a joy to see
I'm also so glad you brought up George's kind nature. George is in my opinion, probably the most wholesome of all Disney characters to date. His life is so whimsical to a point that it's honestly cute. Like, this is supposed to be the badass and potentially feared jungle man, and he's honestly just a sweetheart, especially given how he handles most animal situations. Not to say he's never picked a fight, but it's a rarity. Even the crocodile tooth he wears has such a wholesome story. The fact that George didn't even fight the croc but pulled it out as a favor cus the croc had a toothache is so damn adorable. It's such a huge part of his character, that it's even in his title, "The defender of the innocent, protector of the weak, and ALL-AROUND GOOD GUY, George of the Jungle." And this movie made it a point to prove how much of an all-around good guy he was.
One of the og himbos
You totally nailed you assessment of Dela as the best romantic needle drop. That song and scene has stayed in my head since I was 8.
I used to look after this younger boy in grade school who had Down syndrome, he LOVED this movie. It was his absolute favourite, he’d ALWAYS be singing the theme at recess.
"OOH OOH, EE EE, TUKI TUKI" lives rent-free in my head.
Honestly, we don't give enough credit to how good three of the four Jay Ward adaptations are. George, the Boris and Natasha TV movie that was almost Pink Panther-y and the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie are genuinely fun times and hold up on their own as amazing tributes to a man whose legacy is ignored in the modern era compared to Walt Disney and Chuck Jones.
This was absolutely my favorite movie from like 2-7 range and it absolutely holds up, glad to see it and Brendan getting some love
I think that Jay Ward productions are, in general very underrated.
I really love this movie. It’s goofy and sincere. It’s nice to have a very friendly family comedy that’s very funny. Cast is all great and I quite enjoy the narrator as well.
In early 1998 I turned 12 and got this movie on VHS as a present. Three weeks later a huge tornado went through my town and we spent a couple months living out of the one room that had the generator hooked up to it. I'd come home from a half day of school (because grade school and high school had to share a building after one was destroyed) and I'd watch this movie every single day.
Just a couple weeks ago my partner and I went back and watched it for the first time since I was a kid. I can't believe how well it holds up in so many ways, and how easy it is to fall in love with this movie. Can I just say, the animatronic puppet face on Ape is astounding! It blows even modern face tracking CGI out of the water.
I was in my late teens when this came out and was positively obsessed. I saw it by myself in the theater and then went back to the theater and watched it four more times while bringing and paying for a friend each time. Later in life, my vhs player wouldn’t spit it out, so it became my George of the Jungle machine and I wasn’t even bothered.
You really got on all the points that made it great, especially about its positive message for boys about romance.
Thanks for putting together this video. I’m glad it’s gotten so many views!
I definitely recommend his movie Airheads, it's got a great cast and is hilarious.
Ugh! FINE, I’ll rewatch George of the Jungle!
The chemistry between George and Ursula was legit, Leslie Mann even admitted to having a huge crush on Brendan during filming
I don't blame her he's cute as hell in this movie 😍👍🏻
@@DeanTomboy1995 I wouldn’t blame either one of them if I was in the other’s shoes 🤣 they were both cute
Wonderful review, Cory! I’ve never seen this movie, but I saw the trailer for George of the Jungle so many times in the preview sections of Disney vhs tapes as a kid that I have the standout line “Go…find…George” engraved in my mind. This is going right at the top of my Disney+ watchlist.
Brendan Fraser was my dream casting for Shazam! for a long time. It's too bad they didn't make a version with him in the 90s
Yeah this movie introduced me to Brendan Fraser. He’s definitely a great actor and he got that well deserved Oscar for The Whale. I’m glad he’s back and in a good place than he was. George of the Jungle was a good movie I loved to watch as a kid and I look back on that movie often mainly because of that catchy intro song I can’t get out of my head.
I used to own this movie on VHS, my godmother gave it to me as a present, but for whatever reason it had a teli tubbies case? At some point, my mom threw it away along with the VHS player, and last year my ex gave me another one, this time in its original case. I absolutely adored this wacky film and every once in a while I rewatch it on Disney plus
this is my most fave brendan fraser movie ever
03:09; Judd Apatow put a stop to the mutual crush between the leads by stopping by the set a lot more often.
Oh Thank You for making a video for Brendan Fraser To the T!!!!
Tiny correction. The jungle, according to the movie, was not in Uganda. It was in Bujumbura, the then-capital of Burundi.
Can you do the sequel as well by any chance ? I think its way overlooked so I’d love to see George of the Jungle 2!!❤
What about the Canadian George of the jungle show? It’s got two wildly different seasons.
Disney was so stupid to fail to make a great sequel of this movie. I looked forward so much to seeing George, Ursula and their son and seeing a movie that, this time shows George protecting his jungle animal friends, the human friends he has made since the last movie and his family.
Yeah, I would have loved to see the sequel set entirely in the jungle and just have George and Jr. standing up to Mean Lion. As well as some jungle girl action from Ursula. But nooo...
Instead we get a movie that is just a retread of the first
Yes, we all loved Brendan Fraser… Especially the moms! L O L ❤❤❤
Can you do the sequel plz??
Brendan fraser peformance gets better if you ever watch the 67 series with most 90s babys probably didn't but he really does a great impression of bill scots voice jungle and dim voice and he speaks in third person
you should do a reaction to watching this movie and the second one
The original cartoon nobody gives a crap about anymore was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better (and sadly, incredibly hard to find no thanks to Jay Ward's Estate)
Also, what was up with Brendan Fraser in live action movies based on Jay Ward Cartoons, am I right?!
He was in George of the Jungle, Dudley Do-Right, I'm amazed they didn't bring him in for the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie...
@@AutisticJoker88 I mean, the George film was better than the source material, which was just Jay Ward and Bill Scott doing a pretty lifeless Tarzan spoof cut between segments that weren't as charming as the extra segments from Rocky and His Friends.
@@daniexists6 Your mom was doing a lifeless Tarzan...
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU GOT F'D IN THE A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@AutisticJoker88 Your Mother jokes will get you nowhere in life.
@@daniexists6 Haven’t you seen the Canadian George of the jungle show lately? Its two seasons are wildly different as hell.
I'm so glad he's finally getting the recognition now!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻💖💖
