The Power of Nature - since crossing the Ribble Link (see our two videos on this) the whole tidal river thing has piqued my interest and curiosity so in this video I go down to the banks of the River Ribble in Preston, Lancashire, and see if I can catch the tide coming in. It's supposed to be FAST so hopefully I'll be quick enough and we can capture the footage from the ground, and from the air...

To get across you need to navigate two waterways, the River Ribble, and the River Douglas. It's a tidal crossing with a circa 30 foot depth so isn't to be...

Great video .i know the whole length of this canal i grew up living by the watch house cruising club at stretford . Worked at the animal sanctuary just under the m60 further down at sale and walk dogs around lymn on the towpaths i even helped to re lay the towpaths around Timperley!!
Searched for the music you used having no luck with it can u help
The Anderton Lift to give its proper name is having considerabe work on it. Iremrmber it back in the 1980s and 90s when yhere was a campaign to save it. I think youtube has an srticle when Johnnie Morris of Animal Magic fame went up the lift. Worth seeing to see it then and now.
Have been told the river used to run where Blackpool tower now stands..how was this possible please. ❤😊
Well that’s a new one on us but Blackpool’s own tourism website suggests that was the potential case: “It’s clear that it previously flowed along a different route from its current course. And it’s possible that the old course was along the northern edge of Longridge Fell, reaching the sea near to where Blackpool Tower now stands. It’s not been conclusively proved, but finding Diamict (boulder clay or till) at depths in excess of 20 metres beneath the Tower supports the theory.” Seems weird though doesn’t it?!!
You must have gone to westmoreland on a Wednesday or Friday for lunch (i work there now as a server, lol)
I think it was a Wednesday yeah 🤣👍
You needed to moor in Skipton before the basin and between the two bridges. We were pinned by the wind in exactly the same place but going in the opposite direction.
We moored near there on the way back - was a good spot actually but didn’t regret where we ended up mooring bar some road noise and speeding boaters. 👍
Yuck what a mess 🤢🤮. It's very rare to actually see the CRT out on the canal in East Lancashire, so it's no wonder the canal gets in such a state. It even takes forever for any leaks to be repaired. I guess it's all due to lack of funds or manpower or both. The East Lancs section of the canal though has been dirty and disgusting for as long as I can remember.....and I'm now 70! You only have to look on the streets etc, to see that many parts of England have a real problem with litter louts, and the canal is another receptacle in which to dump rubbish. It's a wonder that there is any wildlife on or in the canal at all.
Can’t argue with any of that…
Hello ! Hope you both are doing ok..haven't seen you on lately...you are one of our favorite youtubers...Hope to see you soon!! ❤️
What a lovely message - thank you! We’re doing OK thanks. Working, working, working but hoping to get some time for some winter cruising soon so we might be bothering your TV screen again then 👍❤️
That's good! Will take it lol😅
Yes, we miss you as well. Wondering how you feel about the network ripping off your channel name?
Xx
Thanks Edward
I used to volunteer for the CRT in Burnley. We spent one Sunday a month clearing rubbish from the canal side, cleaning pathways, steps, removing Hymalayan Balsam, etc. We were out in all weathers, unless it was deemed unsafe. I was hoping to get to do some more interesting jobs within the remit of CRT, but that apparently wasn't offered to volunteers. We occasionally had a service boat to get the more challenging items out of the canal. It was very disheartening to go back to an area we had cleared, to find it looked the same as before. Piles of dirty nappies, drug paraphernalia, clothes, trolleys, endless empty beer cans. Sadly, it's not just Burnley that has this problem. People just see it as a way of disposing of unwanted stuff. Out of site, out of mind etc. Houses and businesses alongside the canals just throw unwanted crap over their fence, instead of disposing of it properly. Yes, the tourist areas are focused on, but the outskirts are left. It's an asset that has been neglected, like all other assets, libraries, swimming pools, sports centres, playgrounds etc. No longer seen as important with budget cuts etc. Sad, but I think it's only going to get worse. We may end up with some parts of the canal system that become un navigable because of the lack of maintenance.
I think you’ve nailed it absolutely 100% there. In some areas the canal is seen as a major asset by the locals and in others it’s the opposite - a place to dump stuff.. Burnley is sadly the latter…
You need to get your sound sorted out - apart from that I enjoyed it.
Thanks
I spent all my childhood in Barrowford until the late 70s, and family history traces back over many generations living there. Barrowford actually consists of 3 parts, Higherford, Barrowford, and Lowerford. You only showed a smidgen in your video.....some of the better parts 😂. Population is forever increasing and is now well over 6K and probably nearer to 7K. The derilict looking building above SS Peter & Paul Church, was originally a corn mill. It's been an eyesore for about 50 years! That black box that you were trying to peer into, will be the post box for whoever now lives at the house which once was part of the tennis club. It's a public footpath all the way along the riverside, but the resident of the former tennis club house, used to try and stop people from walking past and at one point caused a lot of bother with walkers.....no idea if it's still the same person that lives there, but if you're ever in the area again, it is a lovely walk along there all the way to Roughlee.
Some great little insight there - thank you very much for the message 👍👍
Have been looking to see if you were back, so glad i checked in today. What a comeback vlog too. just loved the little tank engine sound. Amazing port too. Hope your back again soon.
Thanks Tessa for that message ❤️👍
Money the oxygen of life. Well done for completing your task. You have been missed on the channel. Hope you're both well. Safe journey travels when you get up and cruising again. Best wishes from Napton on the Hill south Oxford canal.
Thanks David and hope you are well too? Napton is so lovely - hope you’re enjoying it there? E & S
Good to see the two of you. I hope you are doing well.
We are both well thank you 👍
That seems to happen a lot they get hung up on a ledge
Such a shame though 😢
Hello Sue and Elliott! So glad to see you back. We have missed following your adventures. The video was fascinating. We were sitting here saying “open the bridge”, and it did! So cool. Looking good!
Thanks you two! Glad you enjoyed it 👍❤️
Another very interesting video. Thanks for the history lesson. You looked liked a pair of kids in the control centre! Your fun and enjoyment is infectious. Cheers.
Thanks for that message Neil - that’s very kind of you 👍👍
Hi Elliott and Sue Command control training engineers, eh... You really were called in at the right time 2 trains and two marine boats yey. @NarrowEscape1 hi Elliott and Sue, yer all well. Keeping busy no kayaking as just no time. Busy on my next hobby been into amateur radio gor years and my mate in Cornwall has persuaded me to get my ass into gear and get my licence sorted for ham radio. As well as redecorating my office to accommodate me and the wife working from home she will use mon yo thur and me in on Friday only as I work in the main office mon to thur bummer I know. Kev the brinklow kayaker
Hi again from Victoria, Canada. Nice to see you back. I really enjoyed this one. Hope to see you again soon!
Thanks for that message. We’re still knee deep in work (thankfully) but it should let up a touch in a bit 👍
So glad you are both back and busy and not just decided to stop UA-cam. Love your vlogs and the history.
Thanks for the message. Yep, we’re all good thanks and it’s fab you enjoy the videos 👍
Grand to see you both very interesting vlog tc now the oldies 👍👍🤗🤗
Thanks for the message you two ❤️❤️
Hello from Kansas! Glad to see you guys out and about! That was a cool video, and I was completely shocked when I heard the chugging of a steam locomotive! I was like "what the heck", then it pulled into view!!! You just can't beat a steam locomotive! The history of the Preston Docklands is pretty cool. I wonder what they were doing with submarines there. Refueling and replenishing I'd assume. Thanks! Richard
Thanks for the message Richard. You made us chuckle with the steam train comment. It was super cool to see the train and then for Sue to operate the actual bridge for one of the journeys - such a cool place and experience and totally unexpected so a real treat!!! Thanks again. E & S
So glad to see both of you again. Thanks for a very enjoyable and informative vlog.
Thanks for that message. We’re glad you enjoyed it 👍
Well done interesting place.
Thanks for that 👍
Missed your videos. Welcome back.
Thanks!!!
Glad your back! Who did you have to bribe to get into that place? ;^)
Thanks for that. No bribes needed 🤣 we just saw someone operating the storm gates manually and ended up in conversation. Next thing we’re invited to come and see how it all works - amazing opportunity!!
So glad to see you both back on, excellstuff. Looks like you have a bit of nice weather there, roasting here.
Thanks Ray. I bet it’s warm where you are - would be too warm for us that’s for sure!! Hope you’re well?
Wellcome Back Elliot and Sue that was interesting and nice that you got to have a Shoofti at the Control Centre , It make a lot of difference when you can see the workings of the business end of things Cheers
Thanks Ramsey. It was such a cool place to experience. Cheers E & S
Lovely to see you two again! Wow, what a privilege to go into the control centre. And to open a bridge!
Thanks for the message 👍 Yes, it was quite a privilege for sure!!
Missed you both. Glad you're both okay. Thanks for this upload. Take care and stay safe. Hope to see you again soon. X
Thanks Yvonne. We’re well thanks. Appreciate the message. ❤️
I am so very happy you are both back on ,as I was wondering and worried if you you both where okay, since you haven't been posting for awhile, thankfully I received a reply from one of you a few days ago stating that you are both okay ,whoo hoo 👏👏👏 and forgive me for being nosey I was concerned, very happy life is good and fruitful (work) for you guys, having a bank account is always a good thing haha 😁😁 anyway, best wishes from Kevin in Michigan 👋👋 and as always "keep pushing on"💪 "
Thanks Kevin - we appreciated your message checking up on our well being. Hope all is well with you and the weather is looking after you over there? E & S
I'm 62 retired and doing very well thank you, 90' degrees and very humid today and tomorrow, then a cool down thankfully I lived buy a Great Lake Huron , take care and investigate as many RAF and British army sites as possible 👍👍👍for your other site. 👋👋✌✌
Lovely to see you again! --Dan
Thanks Dan!!
@@NarrowEscape1, I have missed you, but I have no right to impinge on your time. I know that you've been going through some... stuff. I want you to know that I am here for you, even though I am an ocean away. But as the Moody Blues once sang, "Lovely to see you again, my friends." Consider yourselves well and truly hugged, if only from 2000 miles away. --Dan
Awww, thanks Dan, that’s a lovely message to receive!! We’ve just been incredibly busy, and lucky really. The consultancy work was originally for 2 months but it didn’t take them too long to work out what a clever cookie Sue is and they realised they couldn’t do without her so they’ve extended the work and extended it and extended it again - it’s keeping us both incredibly busy but of course it’s nice to have the work! It’s Bank Holiday Monday here (08:30) and we’re off out working already. It was the same yesterday (Sunday of course) and Saturday, but when you work for yourself you just have to get the job done! Cheers for the long distance hug 💃🕺🏽
Nicely done you two. I'm back from my travels to Lechlade and will upload some pics of project boat in the next few days. Keep smiling and have a good week, K
Thanks K - great stuff - we’ll keep an eye out for the update 👍 Hope you’re keeping well?
Absolutely loved that. So pleased to see you on here again and that you are both well. Looking forward to the next one. Keep safe and well.
Thanks Nigel, that’s a really uplifting message for us to receive - you’ve put a bounce in our step this evening with that! It’s been a while, to the point where editing the video took twice as long with having to remember where everything is 🤣 It was satisfying to finish it though and get it uploaded because life has been so very manic of late this felt like a little bit of normality returning! Thanks again for the message 👍😎 E & S
@@NarrowEscape1 Thank you for for the reply. I just love your relationship and the way you bring us into it. Hope to meet you some time on the network and have a lovely time telling of ours and your times on the canals.
@@nigelblair2182 that’s lovely. We just turn the camera on and just shoot a sort of ‘fly on the wall of our day’ so it’s great when people appreciate it. It does make our vlog planning very easy because we do absolutely NONE 🤣 At one point our paths will cross and we can put the world to rights over a beer/wine/gin/whisky (or two) 👍👍
What's happened to your channels. Have you given up posting ???
Hi there - we’ve just posted up a new video 👍
17:58 .The Oder coming of that stagnant canal waterway must have been woeful. Thankfully i don't have *Smellavision* 🇮🇪🇪🇺
Hi Derek - it wasn’t pleasant that’s for sure and luckily I didn’t need to swim to the bank 🤣 It was so close though to me not being able to get off JOSH and onto the bank to pull him through (after several failed attempts)…I was NOT amused!!
Hi Elliot it's a VHF radio not a VHT radio, I would recommend a good waterproof Icom marine VHF radio.
Oh you spotted it!! We saw it ourselves but it was so late in the edit that to change that one tiny point would have been 7-8 hours of re-edit and upload time so we left it 👍
Now you know why Burnley is considered to have the lowest average IQ in the UK...including in councillors!
Probably something to do with the sort of population it now has
Where did you go?
Hi there - we’re still here - just working every hour we can whilst we have the work contract we do. We’ll be back though as soon as we can 👍❤️
Missed you both
Sorry we’ve not been around lately. The client that we mentioned back when we were in Barbridge has kept extending our contract. It’s fabulous news for the Narrow Escape coffers but is wiping us out time wise - if it’s not a 7 day working week it’s certainly a 6 day one. Things should ease off in a bit though so we’ll be annoying everyone again!! 🤣🤣 Thanks for asking after us ❤️ E & S
A massive Hi to you Elliott. How did i miss this video? I was there with uou watching waiting in anticipation for the tide to turn and wow did that come in fast its a massive woosh waves speed was masdive unlike anything i see here on the camel estuary padstow to Wadebridge... Nice video except that Tunnel Exit, poor you you must have been Stressed not being able to move and all on your own as well with no one else around. Just one thing I did find it a bit difficult to make out your words at times because the volume was a little low owing to the engine. But I did enjoy it 😋
