Oooh! The tension was palpable.😮 You took a gamble and fortunately it paid off. Leaving early was the right decision despite the lack of a full English breakfast. Those lockies performed really well. You would have struggled without them. But hey! You made it and I bet the vino was flowing that night. Well done Sue. You're my hero. 🎉❤
Our clutch cable broke halfway down Wigan in pouring rain. We improvised and returned to the top lock then dripped our way to the Kirkless Hall and had steak and chips. Isn't boating wonderful! But it's fun overcoming potential disasters. :)
Wowzers! That sounds very similar to what happened to us on the way down in the episode when Sue bashed her head!! Luckily, depending on how you looked at it we were at the bottom of the flight so we could really only go one way, but had only like 3 or 4 locks to go! You did well to get back up the flight an regroup! Steak and chips…trying not to drool 🤣
what a nightmare, you both done really well getting through all those problems and hope you had a glass or two of wine after that, well done as great video.
Hey managed to watch your video. Wow that was torrential down pour at the lock and then low water 😮 You seen rocks now thats the last thing you want to see. In Summer that lock flight would run dry unless everyone was coming down! But water gotta come from somewhere eh. You always find weed yo push along on the bow eh. Glad you got yourselves up the flight and your angel Sue is a blooming diamond too. See you next time Kev the brinklow kayaker😊😊😊😊
Was there ever any doubt you troupers would make it through, well done 🙂 Now, what about all the other stoppages!! Hope you're staying warm in the current icy blast.
Hey Kevin - thanks for that! It wasn’t the greatest of boating days but hey…we made it!! Thanks on the well wishes - my words it’s nippy at the minute 😱
SO glad you Mae it through the Wigan locks. I remember them will from 3 different passages. Large heavy gates, stiff mechanisms, We had rain as well on one of our trips. Fortunately we ha no issues in mooring in the Wigan area. Found a good laundrette too.
Thanks John. As you know it’s not something you look forward to. Glad your mooring experiences were good. We moored between 77 and 78 I think it was for an evening and we had no issue but SO many people have different experiences. Time of year seems to play a big part. It’s a shame because how much better would it be to split the locks into 2 if not 3 parts because on a sunny day it could be very nice indeed…
Have you been down the Hatten flight on the GU, or the Caen flight on the K&Avon? Another two heavy ones. Its so much better if one can pair up with another boat.
@johnland5042 we’ve done the majority of the GU but not the Hatton Flight yet. The K&A is on the list because, being a Bristol Boy by birth it would be great to go back and be amongst my own people 🤣🤣 Sharing the locks makes such a difference doesn’t it?!! We’ve done hundreds and hundreds of locks and only 1 has ever beaten us collectively and needed outside assistance, and that was on the Wigan Flight. I just couldn’t move it and needed to get a runner to come help me. This was a year or so ago. It hadn’t happened before and hasn’t happened since but it just can’t be right it needs more man power to move it than it did.
Well done guys getting through those locks. That’s an amazing amount of water needed to climb the flight, a bit worrying really. Is it just lock 73 that needs a major overhaul? Not a good time with the CRT losing government funding, it would be a disaster if things like this couldn’t be fixed for a prolonged time because of lack of funds. The lock volunteers were great, how hard would that of been without them 👍 hope you had a good rest after all that as you’ve got your work cut out battling that weed island, take care and thanks for the vlog
Thanks Paul. 73 is the real problem. As you can see in the vlog the leaking from the cill is excessive and needs a major fix but several of the locks on the flight need some sort of repair to fix leaking. The issue is, as you rightly say money, so whilst the flight is closed it would be an ideal time to do some preventative maintenance and fix locks and areas that WILL need work fairly soon but haven’t reached a certificate fix BUT that won’t happen because 1) the CRT don’t have funds left to do that work (lots of suggestions that’s because they cream from the top and aren’t effective and efficient - if you want to see it that way) and 2) that doesn’t seem to be the mentality. We’ve seen situations where an operative finds an extra easy fix job whilst doing another repair and says he isn’t allowed to fix it until it’s been assessed, H&S approved and been allocated a job number. The problem with Wigan is that it is a major gateway off the Pennines to the southern portion of the network so when Wigan goes/breaks it creates havoc! Ohhhhh, the weed, the weed, the wonderful weed 🤣 👍
I sympathize with the boat with no reverse gear because last week I moved the boat for the second time and I made the classic rookie mistake of pushing the boat out off my mooring and then starting the engine only to find I had no propeller thrust and ending up having a lovely couple in a widebeam help pull me back into my mooring spot and found I had a gear box leek so I had no gears 😂😂
Beginners mistake that one Nathan 🤣 As you now know never let your boat go without knowing the engine will start etc 😬🤣 It’s all part of the learning process though 👍 Ps how is your woofer coping with boat life? Is it still chasing boats down the canal? 🤣
@@NarrowEscape1 oh I had the engine going I just forgot to test it in forward and reverse before I set off 😂😂😂 and leelo and Luna are fine thank you and leelo has stopped chasing evil canal boats and started growling instead 😂😂😂 plus I'm day 2 of being frozen in on the K&A but I'm in an ideal spot and still love it
Hello from Kansas! Well considering you made it up the locks, I'd call the weed a slight bump in the road! Annoying for sure, but better than getting stuck at the bottom of the locks! Sunny 10F degrees here today, -7 when I got up. I'm glad I have plenty of firewood! Thanks!
Just watching impossible engineering this episode is on the Falkirk wheel and they're inside the middle spindle while it's moving showing stuff even you guys wouldn't see if you went over on Josh😢 Will watch you guys next I have my priorities all wrong tonight 😅😅😅😅 Chat soon Kev
@NarrowEscape1 it's an absolute engineers dream to design something of that scale the tonnage to each gondola 300 ton with water and up to 2 boats that's each gondola soo 600 ton. The programme was quite interesting 🤔 very modern engineering 😀 But all comes from old designs from centuries ago dotted all over the world. Amazing stuff on the rivers and canals love your world 🌎 ❤️ Kev
makes you wonder a hundred and fifty years or so ago when there were far far more boats around carrying goods the locks will have been in daily constant use they must have been able to supply the water then to operate the locks why can't we now ...
Now then - that’s a VERY interesting point. Wonder if it relates to how important the canals were back then and keeping them going was an absolute priority and water was prioritised for them? Either way a good observation!!
Sad to hear you had to move because of all the dog crap and then to see that guy letting his dog do a crap on the tow path and not pick it up about says it all. Good luck with the Pennywort.
Isn't there a law in the UK to pick up after your dog? It's rather disgusting to hear how many boaters complain about dog poop. I know Fran and Rich are quite angry about it since they pick up after their two dogs.
There is indeed Jane and to be fair, from what we see anyway, 90+ % of people do pick up. Having said that you do sometimes see bigger dogs being allowed to run up the towpath off their leash. How would an owner see exactly what their dog has done in this case? It’s become so relatively rare here to have an issue with dog doo doos that you really notice when you have an issue! Yeah, we had to turn away when Rich got the bag out…it’s not a spectator sport after all 🤣🤣🤣
@NarrowEscape1 since iv been on the cut iv had to clear up other people's dog crap they left right next to my boat because otherwise people will think it's from my dogs not others it's so infuriating

Thanks Harry. Yeah, what a day!!
Peter and Andrew were absolute superstars and made a MASSIVE difference!!
Sue says “you’re welcome 👍 “ 🤣
As thick as the weeds were I almost expected to see Humphrey Bogart and the African Queen going the other direction!😂

😍
Hello there hope you made it to your destination lot more to it then people think thanks for the video take care x😊
Thanks David.
Yeah, on a nice summer’s day and/or if you are going down it can be easier to do but yeah, what a day we had!!
what a nightmare, you both done really well getting through all those problems and hope you had a glass or two of wine after that, well done as great video.
Thanks Lee. A well deserved glass or two we thought. What a day!
Hope you had a relaxing evening after that day!
We did thanks Carol. What a day!
Well done getting through that lot! Wigan sounds like a nightmare!
Thanks Adam. Wigan has…it’s challenges. Unfortunately when the locks break here it wreaks havoc with your plans!!
Cheers 👍

@johnland5042 We quite like the challenging sections of canal (well, one of us does anyway!). I’ll be able to speak local too so that should help? 🤣

Thanks Lesley! Much appreciated.
Hi guys, wow what a day feel for you. Luckily you got through the locks and the weed😅
Thanks Mic - not the best boating day 😩 but at least we made it through!!!
👍
@NarrowEscape1 yeah I would have given up and taken long route when it was dry if there is one🤣🤣🤣
It was an option we did you with Mic but would have involved going up the Rochdale Canal and that would have been a whole heap of different problems 🤣

-7 eek, bit chilly that! Get the fire on 😎👍
@@NarrowEscape1 Yep! I got both stoves going! I'm going through about 1-1/2 wheelbarrows a day with both stoves.
Wow - that’s a lot of barrowing!! Good work.
