From some guys in the groups and google searches showed that pre emergents will inhibit spreading in kbg because it stops cell division. Since October, I’ve been fertilizing every 2 weeks with Scott’s Winterguard that I have had sitting in the garage for probably 3 years! 😂 This past weekend was my last app. It hasn’t rained in the NE for the longest time, nor have I watered, but because of the huge temp swings, the dew or dampness has been dissolving the fert. The rain storm coming tomorrow and Friday, UGH I can’t wait!!! My grass is gonna be BANGING!!! My grass right now is just simply AMAZINGLY THICK and LUSH, while everyone else is in limp mode 😂 I probably can say my grass is better than anyone is a 2 mile radius! 😂💪🏻 Ppl in my neighborhood who walk their dogs pass my house are constantly complimenting me, I feel so appreciated. Thanks to you and the other DIYers who aren’t trying to sell something has helped thru out the years! BTW, that spreader probably 99% of the ppl can’t afford it, it is amazing tho. I wanted to buy one, but when I saw the price, I said to myself, I better come back down to earth. That is the Rolls Royce of spreaders! 😍 I have an Earthworks and my pocket was hurting! lol Thank you once again for another great video and BEAUTIFUL grassies 😊 I just wanted to say, the camera does your grass no justice. Just imagine it 5 shades darker in person. Just wanted to throw that out there for the ppl 😊

    What's your thoughts on Urea evaporating to Ammonia as the ground get's colder and not being as effective? I'm learning about fertilizers and have read and watched a few things on this. You seem to be very educated in fertilizers so wanted your opinion since this fertilizer seemed to be heavy on Urea as the nitrogen source. Great video as always.

    • @Primetime_Fescue
      @Primetime_Fescue 8 днів тому

      So this is called volatilization. What needs to happen is if urea is applied it needs to be watered in quickly to get into the soil. Urea will also volatilize in warmer soil temps 60 and above so it is best when used in cooler temps. My thoughts on this fertilizer is it’s good but needs to be used in cooler temps. In warmer soil temps I’m looking more at a slow release something like Methylene urea or Urea triazone. AMS is available immediately as soon as it gets in the soil but I do not like to apply that in warmer just because of the quick lush growth. Urea has to convert to a usable nitrogen Ammonium before it can be used that’s why it needs watering in quickly so it doesn’t volatilize. Hope this helps!!

    • @Primetime_Fescue
      @Primetime_Fescue 8 днів тому

      Let me add this also when the temps get lower and lower AMS is a better option or Nitrate.

    • @MikeVinKC
      @MikeVinKC 7 днів тому

      @@Primetime_Fescue That does. The other video I watched was saying the volatilization was highest in the cold, so that had me confused. But I believe he was in more in the Northern Midwest, so maybe he was referring to less than 50 degree soil temps. I found a handy chart from NC State that shows the correlation between soil temperature and what your grass is doing during that period. For cool season grasses, it shows this: 60-75F Optimum temperature for shoot growth. 50-65F Optimum temperature for root growth. 40F Shoot growth ceases. 33F Root growth ceases. 20F Low temperature kill possible if temperature subsequently drops rapidly below 20F So based off this, I'm assuming late fall applications when the soil temperatures are below 60, fertilizers are for pushing root growth and for the plant to store sugar over the winter so they can come out of hibernation in the spring easier. I think of it like a bear storing carbs for the winter. What ground temperatures are you thinking about when to switch to AMS from Urea for a synthetic nitrogen source?

    • @Primetime_Fescue
      @Primetime_Fescue 7 днів тому

      @MikeVinKC I typically don’t apply straight AMS. Obviously most of the fertilizer I use has some in it. Only time I apply something with the majority of it being AMS or Nitrate is either very early spring which for me would be when soil temps are getting around 45 to 50 degrees or the fall which is getting very close now. I just don’t advise DIY folks to apply it especially a sprayable AMS. One because most DIY folks spray at a very low volume and 2 most aren’t dialed in with their calibration. With that said if your totally dialed in and spraying at a higher water volume and know how to figure the amounts then I’m ok. I typically don’t spray anymore than .10 to .15 pounds of N with anything simple because I feel like smaller more frequent amounts are easier to control growth rates and such. You can always add it but you can’t take it away. My best advice is to apply a slow release while soil temps are still 60s in the fall and then when it starts to cool down you can start adding in more of a fast release. Quick release fertilizer doesn’t last but typically 4 to 6 weeks a good slow release can last 3 months. As you mentioned the plant takes up and stores it over winter. Obviously you want get the response from a slow release as you would with a quick release this is why folks want the quick release but it also comes with a lot of lush fast growth in warmer temps which leads to problems. I run some quick release coming out of winter and then later in the fall like mid to late October and now but all the liquid applications I do in the spring are with a 50% slow release liquid. I still get a response but it also helps hold on some until the next app. I spray .10 pounds of N every 2 weeks basically from my first application until overseed. First 2 apps are quick then once soil temps come up mid 50s and up I start the 50% slow. That’s what I have been doing and just reverse those temps come fall once soil temps start dropping to 60 and below I start the quick release. This is why you can’t do lawn care exactly based on a calendar date! You have to make applications based off of your weather and as you know weather can be all over the place!

    • @MikeVinKC
      @MikeVinKC 7 днів тому

      @@Primetime_Fescue Thank you for the explanation. This is the first year I'm really getting into the do it yourself mode of lawn care. I am starting to weed out the good information and the BS information. That's why I like your channel. You put out great information that is relatable to my area. I grew up in Eastern NC and other than the late winter temperatures, the climate is similar there as it is where I am now. Plus I'm growling fescue. The weather here was very dry and hot late into the fall, so overseeding was challenge this year. After I got the initial germination and second mow, I started putting down about .10 lbs of Urea nitrogen every week or two and watered it in. Ground temps were still running in the mid to upper 60s all the way until the first week of November. I was using DEF, since I have an unlimited supply through work for free. Did this for a while then put down a Sta Green 29-0-5 which is about 25 percent quick release when the soil temps dropped to the upper 50s around November 4th. We are getting into the 40 degree soil temps and wanted to get a little more Nitrogen down before we started to freeze. I am shooting for around 3 lbs in the Fall and 1 lbs come next Spring. What kind of fertilizer do you think would be best to use now? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

      @rubenharris9241 you don’t have to go to the extreme I did lol. I was just trying to make a point for a video lol. I do feel mailing an extra pass over it helps instead of just doing one swath over it.

    That KBG looks like it’s 🔥 I have 50%midnight and 50% after midnight they look insanely good and I live in Illinois where it thrives in cold weather good job you won’t regret ever seeding with KBG.

      So this is even amounts of Midnight, After midnight, and Acoustic. It’s definitely getting better. Not completely impressed with the color but it’s still very young yet.

    I love KBG! I have learned though, it really loves its N and needs more of it, more often than my Fescue for sure to keep it happy. Especially when you are cutting it short. I look forward to the renaming of your channel to Primetime KBG! One of the best things about KBG, you never have to overseed it. I had a crazy amount of die off this summer and it's almost completely filled in and recovered without putting any seed down.

      🤣🤣 Primetime kbg will never happen lol. I love my fescue and I don’t have the patience to grow 30,000 sqft of kbg. I totally agree about the nitrogen. Most grasses that spread are more nitrogen hungry by nature.

    It's a nice looking turf for sure, but in my case I prefef TTTF simply because of less maintenance. .625 inch is a lot of dedication, time, and money regardless of the season. I can't imagine during drought.

      I will be completely honest as of now it’s the easiest grass I’ve ever grown besides Bermuda lol. It’s a nightmare to get going but for me it’s been way less maintenance than fescue. Seems less disease prone so far and it was planted dead heat of the summer. I want keep it at .625” in the summer probably be 1 to 1.5”

    KBG looks good! I mixed STARR KBG in my TTTF. Hit that area with a Nitrogen app to keep the clover from coming up.
