Fishing for Redfish With a Lizard from the Oldtown Sportsman 120 PDL on Estero Bay, Florida

I had a stoyaway tag along on this trip to Estero Bay. I also had some pesky birds trying to steal my bait, making it impossible to fish one of my favorite spots. We still managed to get a red to cooperate and had a nice run from a decent shark as well. Want to help support the channel? Birds of every kind were diving everywhere and bait was busting on the shorelines, so things looked promising. Hello Jake ! cam across your video when i searched for Dr Dineen at Moffitt. Hooe you are doing well and disease free would you today still recommend the surgeon ? .
Awesome video man! recently bought a kayak and caught my first keeper red, which was delicious. Caught her in the same type of mangroves. Cool to see you use a jerk shad, maybe i'll buy some. Fish on!🎣
Awesome bro! I had to undergo another surgery and haven't fished in quite some time, but do hope to get back out there again eventually. I am in SE Georgia now where the reds get up in the marsh grass.
I don't know why people complain so much about catching jacks. They're awesome animals so much power. On light tackle they are so much fun and it keeps the day going. Add some variety to your fishing day.
Exactly bro, such a fun fish to catch.
I live very close to where this was filmed. Have a dock right on Henderson Creek for my center console boat. Beautiful area.
Yes it it. Such an amazing fishery.
Hello Jake, my name is Ramon, looking for interesting content from Estero Bay, I found your channel. I live far south in Cutler Bay, Miami, and I would like to take a trip to Estero Bay, but I don't know anything about that area. I don't intend to give me your spots, far from it. But if you could help me by recommending an area to explore and especially a boat ramp that I can use, because as I told you, I don't know anything about that area of Estero Bay. If you could give me some help, I would appreciate it, thank you.
Sorry for the late reply. I have moved to Georgia and do hope to get back to filming and fishing again eventually. The lover's key boat ramp will put you close to good water. Just fish the mangrove islands in the bay when the current is moving and you can't go wrong. Closer to the Gulf is good Spring, summer and fall, and back on the eastern edge of the bay/creek mouths holds more fish in the winter. Have fun!
Live bait or gulp and jig?
That day was gulp jerk shad rigged on a 4/0 owner weedless 1/8oz hook.
where have you been? like the vids.
Thanks man. I have been recovering from another surgery. I lost 15 feet of my intestines to cancer this time around and it letting my body adapt is a slow process. I hope I can get back out there again soon.
It took me a year to get strong enough to get back out in my Kayak after treatment for LC but I'm back out there now. I pray you are OK.
Glad to hear you got back out there. I have been recovering from another cancer surgery. I lost 15 feet of my intestine this time around and letting my body adapt has been a slow process. I hope I can get back out soon.
Man you really changed how I look at fishing from a kayak
I'm curious. In what way?
It’s been a while, you good man?
Thanks for checking in. I had to have another cancer surgery a few months back and I ended up losing most of my intestines, so it has been a challenge to get out on the water. My priorities have shifted to spending time with family and trying to grow my cabinet refinishing business so my family will be ok when I am gone. I may have still have some fishing in my future though, so stay posted. A 40" snook sure would be nice...
I’m a Naples local. Window cleaner by trade. Let me know if I can help in anyway!
Heading down to Port Charlotte area with 2 friends next week for golf/fishing trip. My friend suggested we spend one night camping at Cayo Costa Island. Any tips?
I am pretty sure it is still closed due to hurricane Ian damage. Let me know how the fishing goes. I haven't been up that way for quite some time, but I miss those waters. They are the best grass flats within an hour drive for me. I am down in Naples, but haven't been able to fish for almost a year since cancer came back. Have a great trip👍
Ever tried launching outside naples from the beach for kings, tunas or macks? Was wondering if they are around less than 4miles out..
I have not done that. I really want to do it over on the east coast from Dania beach one of these days.
Hey Jake. Beauty of a Snook and beauty of a Red. Thanks for the general information. Should start cooling off soon. Hope you are feeling well.
Thanks for watching bro. It may be time you use this strategy again by the time I finish recovering from surgery and am able to get back out there.
I'm not sure what kind of award you deserve for that but there's got to be one out there. I always enjoy your vids. Check to see what's going on now and then. Stay safe. Hoping the heat lets up a little soon.
Thanks man, I haven't been able to make any videos for a while for health reasons again, but hope to get back to it soon.
what kayak are you using in the video?
Thanks for watching Ron. Sorry for the late reply. I am still sidelined recovering from surgery again. That is an Ocean Kayak Malibu Pedal, which is now my extra kayak for my wife/son's. I use an Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL now.
Great video Jake. You’ve got me excited for November when I head down to Estero from Canada for the winter. Hopefully I run into you out on the water this year. You’re fishing my waters. I’ll be out on my Hobie Angler.
Thanks for watching man. I hope I can get back out there by then. My latest cancer surgery has been a tough recovery.
Love your videos! I need to get a peddle kayak to try this method out. I notice you fish Estero bay, have you ever tried hitting the bridges there (Carlos pass, new pass bridges)?
Thanks bro. I tried New Pass once with no luck back when I was still using a paddle. It was much harder to hold position there. I have been wanting to try again with the pedals. It's on my to do list, but I am recovering from another big surgery right now, thus the lack of new videos.
@@jakewkayakfishing8457 sorry to hear that man. I hope you fully recover soon and can get back out there. Thanks for the info, I may give new pass bridge a shot tonight with the full moon, or just cast from shore around some passes. Looking forward to seeing you out there!
Hey Jake, any tips for snook and reds in Estero bay?
Thanks for watching Michael. I hope to get back out and film some more as soon as I recover from my last surgery. This time of year I do best there using live palm sized pinfish, mullet from finger sized up to 8 inch, or cut ladyfish. The fish will be on points with decent current, especially points with submerged oyster bars that extend past the mangrove edge. On high tides they will also be on open grass flats with oyster bars. You can throw artificial at first light until an hour or two after sunrise.
Bro these videos are really helping me learn! Are you going to make more?
Thanks bro. I am so glad you enjoy the videos. Cancer caught up with me again so I am recovering from another big surgery. Hopefully I can get back out there in a month or two.
@@jakewkayakfishing8457 Prayers on the way. Keep on keepin' on. Your fishing is super and so are your vids! I can only think how great of a person you are.
Very nice
How do u like to work ur jigs?
Sorry for the lack of content recently, my health caught up with me again. Different retrieves work on different nights. I like a quick double twitch on most nights, but sometimes a straight retrieve is better. The key is the be near the bottom.
@@jakewkayakfishing8457 thank u for the response jake, I hope u get well soon 🤙🏻
Hey Jake, what is your preferred method for live bait? Some small weights or free lined?
Sorry for the lack of content recently. I am recovering from surgery again. I like to free line live bait if current allows. With cut bait I go with a knocker rig in heavy current, but often the weight of a ladyfish steak or half a big pinfish is sufficient.
Hey man, nice video. i was curious what rod holder is on your yak?
Sorry for the late reply. My health caught up with me again and I am recovering from a big surgery. My rod holder is a YakAttack Zooka. I think the model I have is discontinued and replaced with the Zooka 2, which uses the new lock and load base. I have that base on my camera mount and fishfinder mount and really like it, so have thought of upgrading the rod holder too.
It was amazing with kayak and the fish is big
This model is now the same as old town's salty model now.
Back visiting. This was a sad time with the Red Tide. Our area, Naples and Marco are still suffering the effects. I hope we never see anything that bad again. Beautiful sunset too. Thanks again Jake.
Sorry for the late reply. I have been recovering from surgery again, thus the lack of content. Thanks for watching bro. I hope to get back out there again at some point.
Hey Jake. Always love your vids. I can't even imagine going 15 miles. Most of my trips are under 5 miles. Great video. Thanks
why do people let there fish go and not eat them that snook was 35 inches
Kenneth, they must be between 28-33 during a certain season to harvest here on the Gulf Coast.
ua-cam.com/video/eNLVcen2cso/v-deo.html
Been debating between the Salty PDL and the Sportsman 120. I'm a big guy (240lb) fishing a small inlet with a lot of very skinny creeks but with a lot of current. I'd want to be able to stand and push through flats but cover ground against wind. Like the idea of lighter and more minimalist for quick grab/go. Any opinion?
I now have a sportsman 120 and definitely prefer the extra space. It just feels roomier in the "cockpit". It is substantially heavier, but with a cart it is a non-issue. Once on the water it is fast. It is also quieter when stalking the flats. The Malibu is a perfect second yak for my wife or kids though.
Really like the bed rack/ rails...I'm going to build something very similar as soon as I get my bigwater.....thanks.
Thanks man. It worked out great for me.
Is it heavy to roll around launch?
It is considerably lighter than my Predator and Sportsman 120.
Underrated channel👍🏿 You inspired me to throw flarehawks in Miami and I got a 34" this evening. Any other lures you suggest? I went to Marco last week but it was blowing and the current was ripping.
That is awesome man, congrats. The Gambler 6.5 and 8 inch GZ swimbaits are popular over here for night fishing tarpon and snook. The Sunshine Ace hardware stores here carry big 3/4 to 1.5 oz jig heads for them that I don't see on the Gambler website. I carry them in my night tackle tray, but always end up going back to my flairhawk after a few throws because it is my confidence bait.
Great trip! This is where you got me hooked on kayak fishing. Thanks bro, for introducing me to my favorite past time. Best part of video is where you come over to help Jordan with his snook and he releases it right before you get there 😂.
Yeah that was funny, lol
Watching some of your original vids for old times sake 😄. Curious if you still have that net, because between me and Jordan, we have lost at least 3 since then (well you know of one that I lost) 😳
Oh no! These old ones are terrible🤣 I still do have that net. I still look down when I pass that area where you lost yours. It must be encrusted in barnacles by now though, lol.
What a great channel. Really shocked u don't have more subs.
Thanks man, I appreciate that.
Hi Jake, I've watched many of your videos as I live in Naples and fish from a yak too! Great job! I have an old paddle kayak and I am looking to get a peddle kayak. I see you went from the predator to the sportsman. Are you happy with the switch? Why not a Hobie like it looks like your friend Mike pedals? Thanks
Thanks for watching Mike. The main reason for switching to the Sportsman 120 was length. I recently bought a Promaster Van for work and I can fit the Sportsman inside with the doors closed. I can actually get the Predator in there if I raise it up and wedge the nose between the seats, but with the sportsman it is just easier. As for Hobie vs Oldtown, I just prefer the instant hands free reverse, especially when I fish the bridges at night for big snook.
@@jakewkayakfishing8457 Thanks for the response. Yes the instant reverse is appealing to me also.
what braid/leader weight are u running?
I use 10 lb braid with 25 lb floro for throwing my favorite lure(jerk shad on 1/8 oz weedless hook). My live bait/cutbait rod has 20 lb braid and 40 lb leader because I normally throw big baits(hand sized pinfish or big chunks of ladyfish). My night bridge snook rod gets 30 lb braid and 40 lb floro).
Awesome job Sir
Thanks James👍
Do u ever use live bait?
At this location the jigs work better for snook. A chunk of blue crab is good to target the big black drum. I have tried big live ladyfish and mullet, but they usually get smoked by giant goliath grouper and sharks.
How did u make the light?
I show the light in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gRcZmmjRU8w/v-deo.html It is made from an old surf rod, a flashlight, and an plastic spice container(like they sell Italian seasoning in) that I lightly sanded to make it less clear so it really refracts the light.
Are u anchored up when u throw jigs?
No because you have to throw it into the current which would put your anchor in front of you. The fish ends up pulling you right over your anchor. Pedal drive is the best solution. I explain it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gRcZmmjRU8w/v-deo.html
Beautiful job with the camera on this. Great Snook and Great footage. Always enjoy your vids.
Thanks Steve👍
Wow what an amazing spot, greetings, one hobby friend
How cheap?
Any suggestion for fishing via flats boat this time of year? Going out to the bay this weekend for the first time.
Sounds like fun. Snook and reds tend to stack up in the furthest reaches of the bays and creeks this time of year. When you find areas with lots of mullet, the reds will be mixed in. Let us know how you do.
@@jakewkayakfishing8457 it was a tough day. Was all over the bay. Got 2 small snooks 2 spotted trout and a big jack. Still a great day.
Not bad for first trip out👍
