Hey - Hollywood here! This channel began after my journey thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, 2,193 miles from Georgia to Maine. I was thrilled to share and build excitement for the docu-series “Pack & Soul” I created that chronicled my thru-hike. (Available to view here on UA-cam and on Documentary+, a free streaming application available on most smart-TVs and sticks).
I’ve since begun creating informational videos that include backpacking information, my mistakes, gear reviews and camping & thru-hiking tips. In preparing for my first thru-hike, I watched hours of content to learn and get ready for the journey ahead - I hope that my content helps you feel more prepared for an upcoming long-distance hike or gives you the push to get out and get going. Happy Trails and remember... if you can’t carry it in your pack or in your soul, you don’t need it!

Nemo Disco 15 Degree Sleeping Bag REVIEW
2024 NOBO I was $7500 into my budget of $10,000 by NJ. Big reason I got off trail. Walking too far (WTF)
Yeah those expenses add up quickly!! Did you stay in town a good amount? Hopefully you can get back on trail one day if you’re so included
How did you wash?
Very infrequently lol. When I went into town for a hostel stay every week or two I washed there. In the interim I jumped in lakes etc. Probably could’ve been more hygienic
Finally, I have looking for a video of someone giving an idea of what is the cost. My plan is next year and really wanted to get an idea of the cost.
Heck yeah! Hope this helped a bit
Almost 20$ a day for food....on a trail.....in the wilderness..... Seriously WTF were you eating out there, Lobster tail?
If I have extra space in my canister, like on a simple overnight trip, I use it to carry my sleeping bag with my food. Sure some of the food might rub off onto it like cheese and salami but I figure I can was the bag later😉
Great idea to carry other things in the bar bag!
You said you re-supplied every 3-4 days- was it that easy to get off the trail to do that? So, you also weren't bringing more than 3-4 days of food at a time?
Fortunately, or unfortunately, you’re pretty close to town almost all of the trail. Even if it’s like a little convenience type store. I rarely had more than four days of food with me at one time.
Anyone else used the disco as a quilt ... Just curious
I’ve definitely used it as a quilt, but wasn’t nearly as warm as using as a bag obviously. Thanks for sharing the info about your experience trying it out!
What is total gear cost?
It’s honestly hard to tell since I got it over several years. Maybe around a thousand dollars. Maybe a bit more
Can you post the item list somewhere? Of course I don't want or need your credit card statement, just a list of everything you spent money on. Even though it's only been 2 years since you posted this, I am wondering what the price increase would be considering the cost of everything keeps rising so I am guessing it would cost a little more today than it did 2 years ago. I live in Maine. I hope to do the hike someday if I get better. I have been sick for a long time and still have no diagnosis but I keep hope I will get better and be able to do this hike. I think it's awesome you did it! Would you do the hike again if you could? I am new here so if I ask anything you answer in other hideos, I apologize, I plan to thumb through your video catalog after I watch this.
Thanks for watching! I hope you’re able to get out there one day, would be incredible to watch your journey. It’s been 4 years since my thru, so I honestly don’t have that list anymore. But yeah, I’d say things would be more expensive now, even just groceries. Totally worth it though. I’d love to hike again one day, but would probably do other thru-hikes first I think.
Any bigger person use this ... I'm 52" chest ...just wondered
Curious to know if they have too. They have bigger versions you can get, and probably worth it to go to an rei and lie down in one. Interested to know how it feels for you
@PackAndSoul I'll let you know next few days ... I'll try one out n post my stats n how it feels
@@PackAndSoulok so I tried it... I'm 5'11" 250lb 52" chest. Whilst my disco 15 has more room than usual bags... But ultimately it still pushes my body against the down wall .. as we all know this isn't a great thing... So I am not that confident in using it as a sleeping bag... But I have been kinda using it a bit like a quilt ... That seems to work but obviously it's a bit clunky ... So I may be searching for a 15f quilt
What was your total weight?
35 lbs including full resupply of food, water, and all my camera gear
A wool base layer can be wet but still feels warm.
Great tip!
What I never seem to hear anyone mention, That I Carry on any multi-day trip, ( both backpacking & bike-packing) is a Good Multi-Vitamin to help the body cope with the not so great diet on trail❗️A Good Multivitamin doesn’t need to be taken daily but can be taken every other or every 3 days to benefit the pounding and neglectful diet while pursuing the goal of finishing in a decent state.
Excellent point! Thanks for pointing that out
The Vermont cheddar cheese idahoan mashed potatoes were my go to flavor a tuna or chicken pouch and sleep .but you are right you do get flavor fatigue after a while . I always had the goya sazon packets light and a bunch of flavor .and most important cheap 24 packets for about 4$ i never used the whole packet great video 👍👍
Thanks for watching! I don’t think I can have anymore Idahoan for at least another 3-5 years lol. Appreciate the comment
The cold-soak in a Talenti jar idea was first brought to my attention by your docuseries, and thanks to that, I already ate some Lemon Sorbet and the empty jar is in the dishwasher, getting ready to take the trip of a lifetime in a few months. Between now and then, I'll be testing out different recipes so there won't be any last-second guessing game while I'm out there. Thanks, as always, for sharing your experience and your perspective. I won't ever be able to stop thanking you, so just ignore me. 🤣
Could not be more pumped for you!! Hell yeah!
Could not be more pumped for you!!! Hell yeah!!
My favourite was brown dynamite
Ha love it
Awesome video . Thank you . What a story !
Amazing right!?
I'm sure he paid $100,000 for those teeth, they're so perfect I couldn't stop looking at them.
Price of braces in 2002 would prob be 100k in today’s money!
You lost me at “cold soaking.” Nothing is more comforting than a hot meal on a through hike, NOPE.
Haha I hear ya
When on some section hikes / shake down hikes spin yo much on shuttels last trip so 2025 will plane better and maby thru hike someday
Heck yeah! Hope you’re able to make it happen
I can only imagine! I eat like crazy after even hiking a handful of miles
Ha got that right! Insatiable
i love these..... and being from north of Boston, I love the dude from Quincy....I'm 60 years old and doing the AT this coming year ('25)....
Thanks so much for watching! And heck yeah! So pumped for you. Please reach out if you have any questions
Do you put your first aid kit and other smellables in the bear canister/storage aswell? I've been trained to put all smellables in the bear storage but it seams impractical when using something like a bear canister. What do you do with first aid kits and other items like toiletries?
Hey! Good question. I try to put all smellables in there, really all that turns out to be is a small tube of toothpaste. I typically don’t bring deodorant or any ointments, neosporin, or anything that would have a scent. My backpack first aid kit is an ace bandage, couple bandaids and ibuprofen. Thanks for the comment!
Excellent video! I love that you included weighted runs and the stairmaster with a ruck since these are always missing from recommendations, but I would recommend people just adopt rucking. Either buy a legit rucking backpack (GoRuck) or load up your preferred pack with 10-20lbs and just walk, just make sure you get some incline instead of just distance. Also, while yes, a treadmill is great, it just doesn't build your body the way Earth does.
Appreciate you watching! And totally agree, nothing like really getting out there - doing is the best training!
I’m 17 and I’d love to go through the trail some day and I was wondering what food you were eating throughout and where would you restock
Heck yeah, get out there and hike that thing! Here’s a vid on the food I ate, ua-cam.com/video/Rm3NnpYZg-Q/v-deo.htmlsi=XCEodebmFEpO2qwE And also the first part of my documentary series, give it a watch, it’ll give you some insight to the trail. ua-cam.com/video/WzfbgE7iMxM/v-deo.htmlsi=mCSk8qudz8hOZ6Nk
I am driving out in the later part of August with my dog Maggie and I can’t wait to hit the trail. I will be renting a car to return to Denver. I am a AT, LT , White Mountains hiker and I am looking forward to switch backs and less brutal straight up and down. I am sure it will be a challenge for sure. I am older so it’s UL all the way for me. Thanks for all of your input. How were the mountain bikers to deal with? Take care
Hey there! I hiked the AT as well before I hiked the CT. The CT is a much more manageable grade than those East Coast trails. There are definitely some huge climbs, and some rocks, but the trail is much smoother in general than the AT or LT. As far as mountain bikers, there were some busy sections where they were prevalent, like around Summit County. And I did encounter 2 or 3 rude ones who thought they owned the trail, but they were the minority. Most cyclists were incredibly cool and considerate. Good luck and happy hiking! 🤙🏼
Tennessee Joe knows what’s up!
It doesn't sound quiet at all!
lol nothings gonna be completely silent. But compared to most, this was super quiet
This is exactly in line with my estimate from watching other thru hikers. Though you did it in 4.5mo and I plan on 6mo, the monthly amounts were on point. Thank you for doing the video.
Appreciate you watching. Good luck with your adventure!
What’s your email??? Watched all your videos before I did the trail this year. You really inspired me. Just wanted to send you a note.
Hell yeah! So happy to hear that. Packandsoul@gmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you
Thanks. Maverick in Florida
Appreciate you watching
The attitude of gratitude will take you far.
Absolutely!
I have the Sawyer Cnoc setup. Works much better. Went from the Atmos AG to an Exos to save some weight. One of my teenage boys took the AG.
Think if/when I get another pack, it’ll be the exos. How you feeling with it?
Hey just saw vid. I knew of john. I am a TA in Maine usually first help out in Rangeley to the end for some. Im sure you know of several ive helped. Hawk, Stella, Skittles, Kristian, ...... and Tara this year on her FKT attempt. I cannot hike but love helping. Kristian's mother gave me my trail name "No Miles"
That’s awesome! Thanks for all ya do. Love the trail name :-)
Can confirm...Osprey did not improve the hip belt pocket zipper. Still need two hands. Perhaps they should have made it Velcro instead.
C’mon, they gotta do better than that! Thanks for the update
@@PackAndSoul I agree!! It’s annoying but I guess it’s a first world problem.
@@PackAndSoul Did you ever find a solution to this, other than using both hands?
@@clark9064not really. Other than the zippers get a little looser over time to make it a bit easier. That and I guess you get more flexible in the torso to be able to make that weird turn lol.
@@PackAndSoul haha! Yeah, it will help my yoga
Platypus for water... either quick draw which is a squeeze or suck filter (like sawyer) but better filter quality. They also make a gravity system... AMAZING I use a grayl ultra press
Thanks for the comment! Will definitely look into those
@PackAndSoul thank you for your content!! Im a disabled vet who just got cleared after 10 years of limitations. Hiking wonderland trail August 2025 and hoping to start my thru hike of AT by April of 2026
@@H00v3r that's incredible! good for you man, inspiring - excited for your journey!
That's about what I thought it would cost.
Thanks for watching
I am going to move from a home to an apartment next spring. That is how the spark of an idea of the NOBO AT was started. I am so glad I am not alone.
Heck yeah! Pumped for you
Just bought a nemo...can't wait to use it. With Pjs on. 👚🩳🧦 lol. incase i need to jump out for any reason in the middle of the night. Always be prepared. 🙂
Love it!
Hiker hunger.
REAL!
Never naked, at least a warm thin base layer designed for the elements. Magic.
Agreed
hey hollywood, i’ve been obsessed with the song that has featured heavily in this series (second time watching btw great work) is it an original song? do you plan on releasing it anywhere if it is?
Thanks so much for watching! Which song are you referring to? Got a couple in there I wrote, and a few others I got royalty free. How’s the one you’re referring to go?
When using an ursack, I think it's important to pair it with the scent proof opsack plastic bag. There's endless videos of a bear tearing out the bottom of the ursack after catching the scent of food inside. But if the bear or 'mini bears' can't smell your food, then you're going to have another level of protection by them not checking out your food. The Opsack weighs very little. This has worked well for me on my hikes of the AT, PCT, Long Trail and more.
Great point, thanks for the comment
That introduction was beautiful..You have no clue how much You're helping some of Us for 2025.
Appreciate that! Reach out if you have any questions, pumped for you!
I would have questions but Your video covered each one thoroughly. Tons of help! You definitely have a subscriber
@@JoeysClones love it! thanks!
4 1/2 months?, you were hauling ass.
Wish I couldve gone slower!!
So I'm a small scale vegetable farmer and the seasons can be tough on me, can make me doubt what I am doing and why I am doing it. I have listened to this most days on my farm and it serves to remind me how lucky I am to do what I do. Wanted to say thanks.
This is such a fantastic message, thank you for sending it. Would love to know what crops you work with, I fantasize about doing the same, though I’m sure I can’t imagine how difficult it is.
@@PackAndSoul Oh I grow about 20 different crops. Try to get most of the staples. Carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, beets, all the good things. It seems like a pretty crazy thing to do in today's day and age but while it doesn't pay well it does keep me out of the painted pomp of office life. Thanks again.
@@zachwilliams805 love that! thanks for sharing :-)
Wow very inspiring…. Thankyou 🙏
Thanks so much for watching!
Awesome x 10000! So beautiful
Thanks for watching! It was marvelous
100 yards away?? First im afraid of not finding it, second im not sure why im afraid of other hikers stealing food. Does that ever happen on thru hikes??
Haha that’d be something. Haven’t heard of it yet, but sure it’s happened. To be fair, they say to put it 100 yards away, I typically get lazy and put it about 50. Thanks for the comment!
Maybe you just being honest and everyone does it... Your nickname is Honest LitterBug you should make a video of all the trash and you cleaning it up the entire trail. Pay me to do it.
People do litter a lot, it’s sad
You should invest in my small business. Where is the refurbish and repair store on or near the trail? Place to rest, reset and shower. Calling the store, Barter Town 😂 Trade what you got for what you wish you could afford.
Barter situation is a good idea
