Episode 31 Kick Pannels 1973 TVR 2500M
In this episode I make new what I am calling kick panels on my 1973 TVR 2500M. I made new front dash panels because they were press board (Masonite) from the factory. I wanted something a little more durable and the originals had a decent bow to them. The original rear panels didn’t fit due to my actions with the rear parcel/package tray. In this episode you will also see me mount the new foot well courtesy lamps and dash illumination dimmer. Thanks for watching.

In this episode I use a tool I only recently discovered to help me tune the carbs on my 1973 TVR 2500M. The Colortune is made by Gunson and it consists of a sparkplug with a clear window in it. One at a time I replaced the middle spark plugs 2 & 5 and observed the combustion color. I then leaned the mixture from the yellow fuel rich starting condition until I achieved the correct blue color. I ...

I like the 70's aspect of keeping it but didn't want to glue the lid shut. I am sure others are experiencing the same thing with their 50-year-old ashtray springs so here is what I did.

Cool to see all these videos and get a good look at this car. My dad imported a special order TVR to the USA around this year and I always wonder where it is now.
That turned out really clean! Nice work Red Team!
Thank you John. Hopefully it works as designed.
Really cool car. I have a 2500 GT6 in the UK. We share lots of components including the ignition switch. I like your wheels and the dash! Great car. Hope the project goes well
Thank you Bernard. It was really nice of you to comment.
A very useful video which is going to guide me through my own repair. If I might make one suggestion: go ahead and show each step of the repair rather than say what you're going to do and then do it. You're working in a visual medium, one in which the mantra is "show don't tell". You don't need the play by play, we'll figure it out by ourselves. There are a ton of videos on line that you can use as examples.
@@richardcostello8662 Thanks for the comment and compliment. As far as the style of the video goes there were a few things. First, I only decided to shoot this video after I had started and completed some of the work. Secondly I’m an avid UA-cam watcher and love the how too stuff but I am not comfortable in front of the camera and never expect to be. 😊. Lastly my style is definitely not the best as you point out showing the details but it is a trade off in my eyes to shoot this way to aid in the editing process which can take quite a while if you haven’t dabbled in it before. 👍🏻 My channel will never be monetized or be my job as a lot of the channels I watch are so… I wonder if one of my new TVR videos shows more of the details as you mention or if they are still lacking in your opinion. Consider watching one of those and letting me know if it’s any different. Thanks
Looking very tidy, nice work!
Thanks Pete. I'll be happy when this project is done. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Interesting, those panels are plywood on my 3000M not fibreglass. But then I suspect the factory used whatever they had to hand. Looking very smart though with your efforts. But do remember that you can't get much luggage in the back of an M series so they don't need to be very strong. There is also limited height when the glass is back. in.
Pete, if you mean those two rear trim boards either side that don't fit and I have to remake, they are fiberglass. Yea pretty tight back there.
@DEMOGarage I meant the horizontal 'floor' is ply on mine. The side panels are ply too but fit pretty well.
Nice clean installation.
Thanks. Not sure if I needed it but it was fun to build.
Happy New Year! Wow, 6 months already! You’ve done a lot of work in that time to improve it. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you David. I am enjoying the new TR3 content from your channel.
Happy New Year to you too. Making sure good progress there Stephen. It'll all be worth it in the end. Hopefully 2025 will give you more miles behind the wheel too.
Thank you Pete.
Nice work as always Steve. Good to see you shifting with the 'correct' hand 😁😁🙃!!
LOL! I've driven in England, Japan, and New Zealand. The shifting isn't the hard part, its the damn turn signal and wiper motor swap from side to side that will get you. The WWII Tank I restored was also right hand drive. Check some of my early UA-cam videos.
@DEMOGarage it certainly spices up the drive! My daily driver (BMW) has indicators on the left stalk and my 3000M has then on the right. I'll check out your tank videos!
I always referred to it as a tank but it was a 1944 MKII Bren.
Much better. Nice work.
Thanks David. Small detail but it was bothering me.
Nice job with the tank straps and filter pieces! Way better than TVR ever did. Wishing I'd forked out on a new tank this summer but then I might get a bespoke one made to give a bigger capacity in a few months time.
@@The_Cotswold_Engineer thank you.
The original straps were just "glassed" onto the bottom of the tank well.
@@williamkennedy3110 that makes sense. Thanks for sharing.
It's all coming together. That'll be a dream once it's all finished, nowhere for the electrical gremlins to hide! Make sure you do your tank before you put the glass back in. Much easier that way! I've been out for an epic adventure in my 3000M today and the alternator light glowed all day as the harness is so shot.... it'll be in the garage soon for a chair refresh and new harness and I shall use your videos for inspiration 😀
Thanks Pete. This rewire job isn't for the faint of heart. I am current bumping up against a problem. Although the wiring diagram from the website has a hazard indicator the harness that was delivered doesn’t have one. The seller of the harness says that style of flasher isn’t available any longer. He said he would give it some thought.
@DEMOGarage I don't suppose it is. Plus I hate electrics, I go by the rule that so long as the smoke stays inside the wires you're all good, as soon as it starts escaping, that's when your problems start! Interesting how you've gone with laying the harness in place to make it rather than replicating the old one on the bench then put it in the car.
I changed the routing a lot and the fuse panel is in a different location.
Very informative! You have thought it through wire by wire as I would expect. Can you post a link to the shrink tubing that you used?
@@BillCooper-ly8ps thanks Bill for the complement and comment. The shrink tube is working good. I am taking the extra time to set it with a heat guy rather than the flame from a lighter. a.co/d/gLfB9cL
Did TVR specific schematics come with the kit or did you draw the ones that had your name and TVR in the title block (one at 7:06)?
@@williamkennedy3110 I drew/updated/modified the one you are asking about. It is still in development but almost there. I have been modifying the Advanced Auto Wire diagram for a ‘73 TR6 so can’t take any credit for the design.
@@DEMOGarage I did extensive modification of the wiring in my 2500M when I restored it but used the existing wires for the most part. I made multiple hand drawn sketches to keep track of what I did but now I want to properly document that. Did you use a software package for the drawings?
@@williamkennedy3110while I am pretty good at a couple cad software packages for this I am just using snagit to change the Advanced diagram.
Thank you for sharing your journey. I have a 77 2500 so will have to make this same journey myself - probably next year. Did you find a wiring diagram for the 2500 and was it anything like what you found in the car?
@@balanair8826 Sorry man I never found a schematic I felt I could trust. I had small issues I just couldn’t make heads or tails. I didn’t cut anything but I don’t think I have it in me to unwrap and draw it up. Mine had lots of mods that won’t make it easy. Thanks for the comment and compliment.
Interesting. At the moment I'm planning to make my own harness if I can get a harness from a more modern car so get all the wire from it. But I might consider using a pre made kit car harness though there would be considerable modifications needed. Interesting how you've picked the TR6 harness to start from.
@@The_Cotswold_Engineer yea I picked the TR6 harness as that is the engine/trans/ headlight/taillights my car has. Not to mention the other lights and steering column are triumph. Seems like the wire colors match up if that is important to you which I kind of like.
Very interesting product, I like it! I've always practiced reading the plugs to verify fuel mixture. Thanks for the detailed explanation!
I'm planning on reading the plugs now that I should be closer with the colortune lead carb adjustment.
A nice biscuit brown colour is what you should be getting for the sparkplug colour. But not glassy looking as then it's too lean. Though the colour of yours isn't too bad. Might be worth getting a gas analyser to check the setting, more accurate than a colour tune, though a colour tune will get you very close. That and sparkplug reading.
I think you are right. The color tune should get me close. That spark plug was before the carb adjustments confirming what the colortune was showing. Looking forward to seeing those plugs again soon but unfortunately the car left me stranded again and I decided to install a new wiring harness. Should be a month before I get her going again.
@DEMOGarage ah yes, old wire and a fibreglass car.... I have that problem too. I have to be selective about which circuits I have on at the and time or I run out of electricity! Was parked up all weekend at the NEC Classic Car Show with the battery disconnected. When I reconnected it, the dash was like a Christmas tree with random flashing lights!
@ This Friday will be part 1 of the wiring.
@DEMOGarage have you bought a harness or are you making it yourself?
@@The_Cotswold_Engineer Its the Advanced Auto Wire harness for a TR6 that I am modifying. I ordered it about four months ago.
Thank you !!
You are welcome normangee. I hope it helps.
That was very satisfying.
Thanks Bro. Do you know what a Nash Metropolitan is?
Well done! It's always so much better when work the way they were intended! Cheers.
Thank you, Kevin.
I held up really well for the drive to Coronado and back! Great job!!
The two front corners are laying against the roof real nice after the trip without me making any further adjustment.
Change holder or in my case, a place to hold all my loose screws Lol.
Good Idea, put some quarters in there for the meters and to hide the rust in the bottom.
Nice. What about doing a black crackle finish on the lid? Might keep it a little cooler on your arm.
Thank you, David, I kind of like the bling of the chrome. Thank you for commenting, and the content you have entertained me with over the years and answering the occasional question. Hope it isn't too cold for you now, looking forward to seeing what your winter project will be.
Thanks for that. When I restored my 2500M, I didn't put the ashtray back but the interior looked so austere all in black. So I put the ashtray back for a little 'bling'. While I was polishing it before reinstalling, I lost one of the springs but since it worked acceptably with one spring I did nothing. Now I will be buying 2 new springs.
LOL, okay, helped at least one person so it was worth making. It felt a little silly shooting the video, so I wasn't sure.
@@DEMOGarage Just ordered a pair of the springs. Will keep the one remaining old one as a spare. Thanks again.
Wow, that's a complicated project 😕. Thanks for taking the time to do a video of it. Very interesting to see how it's all put together, though struggling to see how the interior cover fits. Guess I'll have to wait for pat 2!
Thanks for the comment, Pete. I have sewn the inner part and plan to make a part 2 video. I was thinking that I might wait until I was ready to pull the glass and redo the headliner before I installed the sunroof inner though. Maybe I should rethink that thought and install it sooner and posting the video sooner. If you have a similar project coming up, reach out and I will share with you the info I have prior to posting the video.
@@DEMOGaragethanks Steve. It'll be a few months until I tackle this on my car so no worries, don't rush on my part!
I have owned my 2500M for 49 years. A 1974 bought new in 1975. Drove it for 15 years with the original sun roof at some extra-legal highway speeds. Never leaked a drop. When I restored the car in 2019, I rebuilt the sunroof recovering both interior and exterior. I have driven in some torrential rains (most recently at Our of the Woodwork 2024 in Pittsburgh). Still no leaks. One of the things that you should do, at least I did, is bed the aluminum frame rail that attaches to the body with a sealant. It is my opinion that any water that is blown under the sunroof (between the body and the sunroof itself) will be a very thin film and the aluminum frame is sufficiently thick to act as a dam for thin films of water.
Thanks William that is good to know. What isn't shown in the video is that thin foam seal on the front moving bow only lasted one closing, it immediately gets ripped off. I might try to source a better replacement. I will need to rewatch my own material, I guess I didn't cover it, on the back bow I did stuff it full of foam thick seal that got well compressed when I bolted it down. Thanks for the info and the comment.
@@DEMOGarage On the original sunroofs the seal on the bottom front of the sliding (forward) bow was under the exterior material. The seal was glued to the steel bow and the vinyl (in the original) was wrapped and glued over the seal. The rotary latch has a compound action. It pulls the fabric forward, stretching it tight and also has a cam action that pulls the forward bow downward tight against the roof, compressing that seal.
@@williamkennedy3110crap you are right. I went through my photos and I missed that. Thanks I will add that to my description. My cam action seems to work really well. The front bow even in the corners now fit very good after a few operations without me even trying to mess with the fit.
@@DEMOGarage Hope I can help. I forgot to say it but that was very, very nice work on the rebuild of the sunroof. As you have found it is a complex device. Few have to courage to undertake such a task. Fitting the interior liner to it can be difficult. It has to be the same precisely the same length as the outer fabric otherwise it will sag. I think that TVR got around this with a headliner vinyl that had slight more stretch than the outer cover and cut it just a tiny bit short so that when closed it was forced to stretch taut.
Thanks William. I know what you mean about the fit of the inner fabric. Because I sewed my own, if I didn't nail the length between the back welting that slides in the channel and the center transverse pocket I can always sew in a new tuck. Then the front just gets glued on in the right place.
Interesting video again. I need to do this during the winter on my 3000M as the frame is very rotten in places. I think a jig is a very good idea, I'll make one of those for sure!
My bonnet is perfectly functional, but I had to screw with the attachment points on the car frame. I may take a second shot at cutting and welding the tubes with a jig in the future. I will cover more of my mistakes in Part 2. The next video will be Part 1 of the sunroof.
I look forward to it. I had a bit of fun in my car over the weekend and took it to a track day. Also tried my hand at vlogging on my channel.... need to improve lots of things but it's all a learning experience!
That looked like fun. I wonder if I can find something similar around me.

Looking forward to receiving mine soon in Long Beach CA. We should meet soon, would love to get a mold of the bumpers. Btw, mine is coming from the East Coast like many others.
Did you ever get your TVR?
Where did you get the molds? I'm receiving my 1974 2500m in December. Your neighbor in long beach
I designed and 3D printed them at home. Do you want the STL files? Ill send the files to you if you want. Long Beach? We should get together.
Looking good and I bet it was the only TVR at the show!
You got that right Pete.
A successful and Fun trip!
You are the best John. I appreciate the company and support last weekend.
Great that you made it both ways without mishap. They are actually quite reliable, just a little preventive maintenance. I'll bet you discovered how nice it would be to have taller gearing. A Laycock overdrive that can be added on to the 4 sp. makes a tremendous difference. Lowers revs by about 20% (20mph/1000 rpm vs 25+ mph/1000 rpm). There is a fellow in San Diego that sells (or used to) conversion kits at a very reasonable price.
Thank you, William. I appreciate the nice comment. An extra gear would have been nice. I have wondered if I would take to the overdrive well or would prefer the aftermarket 5 speed kits that are out there.
@@DEMOGarage There aren't many options for the 5 speed transplant. Most are incredibly expensive. As far as I know HVDA (one of the first) not longer does it. Vitesse is sold at Moss and others. I bought a new TR6 overdrive transmission for my 2500M from my local Triumph dealer back in the late '70's shortly after I bought my 2500M and kept my old 4 speed for 30 years before buying an OD conversion kit from a rebuilder in the San Diego area. I bought the kit in April 2023 for under $1400. I sold the OD transmission for about as much as a 5 speed conversion kit. The Laycock conversion is rather easily done by someone with your skills.
Firstly, congrats on the engagement! That dash is looking sweet. I like the strip illumination but with the LEDs lined up with the switches. Nicely done ✔ 👏 👍 and well done for making it to the car show. These cars are made for driving and I hope you enjoyed the drive!
Thanks for all the kind comments Pete.
Dash is WAY BETTER! I know it was a ton of work... but looks like it was worth it!
Thanks Jas :)
Excellent solution. Very inventive. I wonder what TVR would have done back in the day if 3D printing, laser etching and ED lights were available.
Thank you, William for the nice comment.
Nice use of Dr. Evil! I approve!
"Oh, behave!"
That looks amazing! I can't wait to see it in person. Nice work.
Thank you, Michael.
I was excited to come across your videos a couple days ago. I had rewatched all the existing TVR videos many times. Then I learn you're going to a show in San Diego in early October. Ironically I'll be in SD on the same weekend (I live in Vancouver, WA). Now I plan to attend the show. I own a 74 2500m that I've been restoring for 3 years, including inboard rear disc brakes. It's nearly done. I'll show you pictures on Sunday.
Hey thanks Lewis. Nice to hear from you and I look forward to meeting you and seeing your pics.
Looks great! I love the new illumination, pops nicely! T-4 days and wakeup before the show!
Should be a lot of fun
Big improvement over the "toilet seat" version. Looking forward to the illumination video.
Thank you AsleyAustin. I'm actually editing it right now. Not sure if I will get it posted before the weekend.
Great Job! Much nicer!
Thank you, David. I just shot a bunch of clips from the car show I took the TVR to. Like your recent videos I plan to post it as well.
Looking good with out the puffiness! I think the puffiness on the cente console would be worth keeping as it's nice and padded for your arm to rest on when driving. Almost there, and it's October tomorrow so it looks like you'll may l make it to the car show!
Thank you Peter. I should make it. I’ve been driving it to work since last Thursday. So far so good. I’m planning on replacing the sunroof before next weekend.
@DEMOGarage I'll be interested to see the construction of the sun roof as mine has developed an annoying rattle in the front rail and I need to see the construction so I can work out how to get into it to find out what is rattling. It's driving me mad!
@@The_Cotswold_Engineer I started on the sunroof this evening. The outer material I got from John Morgan looks first rate. Installing it will be a lot more involved than I had initially thought. Looks like the headliner material on the inside of the sunroof will be a total PITA!
Agree with Michael, it does look great! If you want to conform with the rest of us, don't put on the front plate! LOL. Looks better without it 😂
Thank you, John. I will see if I can get away with no front plate for now.
