This is very similar to the model I have, but mine is white. It was my primary portable "laptop" for years (i blew all my money on a desktop back in the day). My mom gave it to me after she won it at her work. It was towards the end of XP support but still worked okay at the time. I wound up overclocking the Atom which led to some heat issues so i installed a manual fan controller, which didnt help battery life but I always kept the ac adapter with me at all time anyway. I havent fired it up in years, the battery took a shit a long time ago but I still have it. Ive been watching videos like this of firing up their old netbooks and it makes me want to pull it out and see if it still works. Now that XP will literally explode if you try to go on the internet, I might finally follow through on what i wanted to do years ago and install some form of Linux on it.

Hey, nice video. I just got an identical one recently. I re capped mine to try to fix a similar screen issue but no luck. Oddly though if the 1F super capacitor that is used for the CMOS is removed, the screen looks better. Kind of need that cap though! I had a very leaky cap on the daughter board inside it (adjacent to the cpu heat sink). The super cap was also leaking and had corroded the pads. The floppy drive had a leaky cap too. I recommend recapping if you plan to keep it long term (as well as remove the NiCd batteries from the battery holder). Anyways I have a slight request! Mine came without the trackball or the cover that hold the ball in place. Is it possible for you to measure the trackball diameter and maybe provide some of the dimensions for the cover? I plan to 3D print a replacement!

Many of the XP 1700s could run at 2400 MHz with good cooling. Check the numbers on it and look it up. The XP was short for experience and they could keep up with the Intel CPUs at a lower clock speed for a fraction of the cost. I built a lot of them back in the day.

I have one of these too. Acer Aspire One AOA150/ZG5. Mine came with 1Gb ram pre-installed from the factory and 160gb mechanical disk i think it had. Been running Linux on it which works great but.. really can't find any purpose of this netbook who I have been laying on the shelf for like 15 years or something. Since it came out when ever it was

Watching this at the end of 2024 on an M11x R2. Installed Windows 11 24H2 on it a few days ago just to see if it would work. It's surprisingly usable. Nobody would ever mistake it for being fast, but considering the age gap between the hardware and the OS, I'm pleasantly surprised with how well it's running.

I tried to resurrect one today. It was no longer booting to XP. I finally decided to pull the drive out and replace it. I figured put some more RAM while I was at it. But machine is now totally dead. 😢 No post. Even after reverting to the original RAM config. Nothing worse than disassembling a machine completely for it to die like that. Seems that such things happen to old hardware. I am reading the drive I pulled out using a USB to SATA adaptor. At least will get the original owner's data back for them. Which is more important than this old Netbook. I was hoping to expirement with it. RIP little Acer. I wish you didn't make getting hard drive removed so painful. Wish you could have stayed around.

It's a really nice build and I know I'm late to the party but, I want to express my concern for the choice of power supply, as I saw no one in the comments mention it at all. With Socket A/462, you have to make sure your PSU supports a high load on the 5V rail, because these CPUs draw most of their power through the 5V rail. It's pretty specific to that generation of Athlons since 486/early Pentium era. Most PSUs back in the days could support load of 250-300W (and even more) on the 5V rail, while most newer PSUs usually top at 120-ish watts. Other than that, that's a really neat retro rig 👌 Great video ! :)

Seeing this video really reminds me of my past.. Even though I didn't own the exact same netbook, it's one of my most important memories of my childhood because it's the very first windows gadget I owned, my dad gave it to me xD it's an acer model though, with intel atom and a GMA gpu (forgot the details). I used to play a lot of trial games included in the laptop, like Jewel Quest, and packs of modern (at that time) mini-games by Gamehouse. I also recorded NFSMW 2005 on it, and I still wonder how can I survive the crazy fps drops xD ua-cam.com/video/bToGWxlsP4k/v-deo.html

I just fixed one of these that my sis used back in middle school. Its an 07 modle of the aspire one net book. The best thing acer did was take this model, and make it easier to repair. To get to almost everything, besides the ram stick i believe, i just undo a screw and pop the cover off. I have one running a different version of windows that wasnt half as good as the one in the video though. I hated it even as a kid. It was so slow. But its going to get modded and turned into a retro gaming station. Just wanted to give a little update after 2 weeks of using my xp aspireone. It is extremely capable compared to what i remember my windows 7 (starter) aspire one. I have a few games installed, most of which are low strain, but i have managed to make morrowind work and have played it a bit. Its running a solid 40fps on the little guy, with low graphics granted. I'll be adding and using this thing more in the future. Now im on to my windows 7 dumpster fire of a laptop.

Ethernet with a Xircom PE3?! 🙀640K RAM upgrade?! 🙀 Internal modem to use as a terminal communications port?! 🙀 External CF-IDE with something like XT-IDE using the expansion snap on?! 🙀 or using the LPT ZIP 100 Drive as an external storage drive?! 🙀. then having one card or disk with Win 2.11, another with Windows 3.0, and another another with ELKS Linux for 8088?! 🙀 And using modern Linux over Ethernet to do something cool?! (SSH still a work in progress) 🙀 Backlit-LCD upgrade?! 🙀 Anyway there are a lot of cool expansions you can do still, and would love to see how Windows 3.0 works without the 8087, and with this particular monitor… especially with the GUI versions of Word and Works and other productivity programs from that area.
