    I have one. The keyboard is composed of Alps white switches, which aren't particularly noisy or tactile, and all the noise they make comes from the keys bottoming out. The parallel port floppy drive is proprietary Toshiba, but I believe the printer mode is standard. Most infuriating is that there is a memory expansion card, but it is proprietary and there is no way to get it except in another T3100, so I'm stuck with 640k. I believe the hard drive is also specific to this machine; mine has a 10MB JVC hard drive that is still fortunately working. If this one quits, there's no sense in buying the same model again, the later revisions (such as the T3100/20, T3100e, etc.) are far more capable than the base T3100.

    I worked in a Computerland store when this machine was still a thing. There was a demo unit at the front of the store. I liked the orange plasma display.

      If you like Burger Time, a 100% accurate portage is available on Linux, at least Mint and Ubuntu.

    Had this exact system, it had WordPerfect, Lotus 123 and of course DOS. I got it given to me as a kid. It was a great day when I found GORILLAS.BAS and NIBBLES.BAS!

    Have 2 of them, T3100 and T3100e, T3100 is more difficult to upgrade as it uses MFM disks, and the original Coner disks are all but reliable.
    The T3100e has IDE 40 pins, that can be replaced with a CF to IDE card BUT as the BIOS supports only 2 types of disks (20 and 40MB), you need to use ontrack or another disk manager to force the CF disk, it supports natively up to 500MB cards but can also use LBA disk with a trick. The problem as larger the disk is, as slower commands requiring disk size calculation are slower (dir, NC, msd, tree, ...), 200 or 500MB are the ideal option as the system works normally except "dir" takes up to 2 seconds to display disk details, with larger disks, some software just don't start, not sure it's because of the space calculation too slow or the disk too fast.
    The DD 720 FD can also be replaced by a HD 1.44 without problem.
    Win 3.x works well in 640x200 or 640x400 , PCGEOS too.
    all in all, for its time it's a very capable machine, its only drawbacks are MFM connector on T3100 and proprietary RAM and ISA connectors, but it was the rules on the 80s.
    The best OS, is DOS 5.0, 6.2x works but has no plus value on this 286 machine.

    What a walk down memory lane! How did we ever need more than a 286 processor, it was bitchen fast compared to the 8088 I first had! Thanks for taking that gamble!

    It's a bit of a shocker this one, I know, but bear with it. Computers - even really old ones like this, aren't just for playing games on. You should look into the concept, I know it's crazy but there are so many practical uses for a lovely old machine like that, it's a whole thing, you'd be amazed.

    • @PNPRetro
      @PNPRetro  2 роки тому

      I know you're being sarcastic. And I dig it. But I'd also love to ask what your favorite uses are. Most of what I show off on this channel is admittedly gaming, but I also love deep diving on older operating systems, weird peripherals, and the like. Just not sure how big an audience there is on it.
      Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it.

      @@PNPRetro You're right, I should be less sarcastic but it's a bit frustrating sometimes - you find a retro tech channel here that doesn't ALWAYS default to gaming. And you're probably right about audience, I guess the solution to that would be finding a balance instead of leaning one way all the time? Dunno. Anyway, I'm not going to list everything I use my ever expanding collection for, we'd be here forever. Honestly a lot is just repairing, troubleshooting and getting things to work. But I am also a hobby developer, I was at Uni learning these things twenty years ago and what I did back then is very different to how things work on new tech. I also write quite a bit, and these days a very bare bones Windows 95 laptop (a Toshiba Satellite 110CT in my case) is perfect for that - no distractions, It's a use case, not a suggestion for the channel of course, but setting something up for something similar might be an idea? How to build and set up a perfect vintage era work station (or something similar). Again, I'm not a UA-cam expert, but maybe a crappy idea from me might spark a brilliant idea from you. There's also advanced networking - it's a much much bigger beast than just connecting to the interwebs! How to set up your own server for (whatever). How about doing a deep dive on how to install these older operating systems, including all the pitfalls, what works, what doesn't etc. There's just so much out there, I just wish some tech youtubers would take a look at that instead of the relentless gaming focus. BTW I'll continue watching your channel, and subscribe.

      Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it. I'm definitely working to find that balance. And I've got some retro restorations coming up that are definitely about salvaging old tech and showing what it can do. I had a lot of fun with my Windows Millenium Edition video, revisiting the software I used in the early 2000s. And going back further than that, the first time I set up a token ring network (although that was so my brother and I could play Need For Speed against each other... But I had as much fun setting up the network as I did playing the game!)
      I definitely want to do an evolution of the Windows operating system, and I've been gathering the hardware to do a demonstration on how old BBS's worked. And just a ton of other stuff. You're right, writing a list of a the awesome things you can do with old hardware would take forever!
      Anyway, thanks again for replying. Hope to see you in the comment section again soon!
