Bike Touring the Pine Creek Rail Trail
The Pine Creek Rail Trail
I drove up to Jersey Shore on Thursday October 10th and biked the trail from the south terminus in Jersey Shore to Wellsboro PA. Biked to Blackwell and camped Thursday night. Friday I biked up to the north terminus in Wellsboro and back down to mile 37 and camped around the Tomb Flats area. Saturday I biked the rest of the way back to Jersey Shore.
The Pine Creek Rail Trail is the only rail trail in the Appalachian Mountains of north-central Pennsylvania. The trail begins just north of Wellsboro, runs south through Pine Creek Gorge and ends at Jersey Shore.
The new handlebars I'm referring to are REDSHIFT TOP shelf with a 70mm rise and "redshift cruise control handles"
*drone notice* any and all drone flight footage with permit and/or flight path take off and end on private property and/or with permission.

Bike Touring the Elk River Rail Trail This was an impromptu trip to WV to bike the Elk River rail trail. The trail is still a work in progress but the 45 miles of trail that's open is pretty nice! Bike Touring The Ohio To Erie Trail!
Awesome as usual video. Now I got to do this one. It looked beautiful! I have a question. What do you snack on throughout the day and how often? Just curious, you ride like we do.
@@ericcopass7483 usually various cereal bars, a lot of mixed nuts.
@@ericcopass7483 oh yea, here’s my Strava data for this one strava.app.link/2JbrAqln6Nb
Just found you on Facebook and decided to like and subscribe here. Love your adventures, doing what I wish I could do but I am TERRIFIED to go alone. Be safe!
@@WVJeeper1968 thanks for following along! Ya might try easing your way in, doing shorter routes or camping next to your car and biking from there! Feel free to ask questions if any comes up!
Monongahela: mon on guh HAY la
Great video once again James, hats off to your effort and dedication. I have been following you ever since you road the NETT Trail in Texas which I ride all the time. I live in Texas but grew up in Central PA and went to college in Mansfied which is a stone throw away from the PA Grand Canyon. I still go back to PA once a year and ride the rails to trails. I suggest you try the Clarion River Trail from Ridgway to Brockway and also the West Creek Trail from Saint Marys to Emporium and also the Mount Jewett trail from Kane to the Kinzua Bridge. These trails are shorter but the scenery is just as beautiful as the Pine Creek Trail and you could hit all three of them on one of your 3 day off work weekends.
@@9INTEXAS I really appreciate you watching and commenting. I’ll definitely add these to my list and check them out! I’ll eventually knock all of them off the list!
dude, you nailed that footage on da pine creek trail. what a show!! thanks for sharing!!
@@princepage632 thanks! I really appreciate it. It’s hard trying to capture what it really looks like
hey bane, got any suggestions on drones . i have never fooled with drones or any kind of video eqt before. i don't anything about them at all. could you give me some advice on them if you could. thanks!!
@@princepage632 I don’t know a lot about them, other than what I have. I’ve got a dji mavic air two. You really can’t go wrong with them. What you gotta check is how good the camera quality is. This one shoots in 4k at 60 fps.
is it eagles or ospreys your seeing?
@@princepage632 I’m pretty certain they’re bald eagles. Half of them had the white feathers and they was all within 3 miles of each other. I could be wrong obviously, but young bald eagles don’t have white feathers…I think lol
dat pine creek looks good now!!
@@princepage632 it’s definitely gorgeous. Really gotta try to go out and experience it in person!
Love your videos. Did you know that, USA today rated the Pine Creek Rail Trail one of the top ten rail trails in the world, It was used to transport tember from the forest to the Jersey shore. If you could include some history of the trails you ride, and the purpose of the railway, when it operated and when it was converted into a trail, I think people such as myself would really like that. I watch all your videos and enjoy the drone footage as well as the care you take in filming. Keep up the good work!
@@RobertSelby-qx1jp thanks for the feedback! I’ll try to start tossing in more info on the trails!
I’m a little unclear on the trail’s surface. Is it possible to do the entire trail with a 700x28c road tire? Thanks.
@@davidschmude I did it on 44s, mainly cause that’s what’s on my bike. I don’t recall even hitting any rough spots, I bet you could do it on road tires
yeah you beat around the bush about how you afford to take trips. dude, it cost money and i know it does, because i do it too. i just did a trip and the floods came and i had to book it home. it ruined my trip basically. i have been biking a long time!! you mentioned something about kids!! how many kids you got and how old are you. i say your about 50!! i quit my job 15 years ago and started traveling and working in da parks around the country. i don't do that anymore . I am retired now, but money is tight!! i have to save up to do trips!! i still have not made it up to the gap and C&0 but i will make it up there!! i will also do the pine creek trail!! i still have not done all of the katy trail either. and a small part of the greenbrair trail. and sections of the katy trail.
@@princepage632 my boys are 19 & 23, so they’re grown. I work, I have a job. As far as the trip expenses, I spent $20 on the trail. Less than a $100 on gas. I don’t really count the food I take cause it’s either the same stuff I’d eat at home and usually cheaper.
I’m 45
@@TheBane1979 well, it sure cost me a lot more than that on my trips. camping fees, and food and gas. i spend around 300 dollars per week when i take a trip biking. I think i could cut down on this a little, i party at the camp sites with beer , and i pay 20 dollars a night on the camp site. I mean i have to do better on my money. i pay a lot on my apartment and bills every month. i don't know about you , but i have lots of bills. If i did not have an apartment i could travel full time no doubt about it!! I thought about giving up the apartment but that is not a good idea for me. i am retired and living on a fixed income.
@@princepage632 you probably spent more money on bike trips than me. Most of my trips aren’t a week long, this one was basically two days. It’s rare that I’ve spent money on a camp site, I’ve gotten a room twice I think. I have bills like any one else, I just don’t spend much on trips other than gas. The bike and stuff I use to camp are expensive, but I’ve spent four years gathering the stuff up. I’d like to bike travel full time, but doing it full time isn’t something I can do currently
Hats off! Perfect frames and very smooth editing - a real treat for the eyes! 🌅🎥 Best regards from the drone group! 🚁😊
@@AnielskieChaty awesome! Thank you!
Noticing that when you go through bridges the girders are always slanted down to the right - distortion in your camera? Not noticeable in the rest of your video.
@@rickhagen433 not the camera, the bridges was off set, at least I assume that’s what you picked up.
awesome dude!! i am envy of you !! wish i was there biking!! no money !! sitting at home doing push ups and pull ups and dips!! spending all my money on my van fixing it up!! but i will get there!!
@@princepage632 I spent a long time prepping to get to this point too. I cut out about ten minutes of me blabbing talking about how I didn’t really have any hobbies till my kids was grown cause I couldn’t afford to do stuff and still provide for them. Just keep pushing towards your goal. By the way, I really want a can to travel in lol
I have carpal tunnel and noticed a big difference when I went from a suspension fork to a rigid carbon fork. You said you changed your handlebars to get a more upright position. Did you see much of a difference on your hands going from a MTB front suspension to a rigid Touring fork? Thanks for the vid. I was wondering what the folliage was doing out there right now. Looks like you were about a week early for peak leaf change. I'm going to ride it next week and it should be about perfect.
@@cheezy-rider yea, I was a little early probably. To be honest, I didn’t bike on the mtn bike enough and when I started on these trips I had the suspension locked out. On this trek 520 I had the drop bars that came on it and I switched to what’s considered a gravel bike drop bar but it has a 70mm rise so I’m setting more upright. Definitely a change in the amount of pressure my hands soak up because there’s less weight on them. I thought my butt would end up hurting more, but I’m so much more comfortable now.
@@TheBane1979 surprising how being more upright is easier on the rear end. I'm still trying to tweak my set up myself. Thanks for response. Take care.
@@cheezy-rider yea, I thought it would suck but there’s more of my butt on the seat. I’m currently tossing all of my Ohio bike tour videos I did last year into one video. I’m definitely going to do the Ohio to eerie trail again. If not sometime next month (maybe if the weather is awesome) then next year. I need to come ride in your area and drag you along with me lol
@@TheBane1979 I would keep up for a little while at least. You ride pretty hard. LOL
@@cheezy-rider nah, I’m fairly slow probably lol
Nice video. Curious about your bike set up? You look like you’re pretty up rite even with the turn down bars.
@@chiefdog1019 yea, I just got a bar set up from red shift that has a 70mm rise.
Absolutely beautiful footage of the trail. As a new rider, what type of bike, tires are best for this type of trail riding. I have a Giant street bike that I ride on the Ohio to Erie trail. Thanks again for another great video. I always look forward to your videos. Gary
@@garybolender954 first off, I’m fairly new myself. I just started last year. The trail surface of this one is really nice. Crushed stone is sometimes better than pavement even. I have 44mm tires on this trip, which was still installed after doing the C&O canal trail. I was riding on 38mm tires which would have been fine for this one.
Bane, The footage of the bald eagles was awesome. I liked how this trail followed along the river and the bridges over the river were awesome also. Have you ever seen any bald eagles on the Ohio to Erie trail when you rode on it?
@@garybolender954 I don’t recall seeing any on that trip. I’ve seen one on the greenbrier in WV, and I’ve seen some in southern Ohio just driving down the highway. I can’t recall seeing any others out on trails (off the top of my head anyways)
Bane, Any plans to ride the Katy trail ?
@@garybolender954 I actually rode the Katy Trail earlier this year! At this point I don’t have plans to ride again, but I probably will if they finish the other trail (the rock spur I think it’s called)
Wow! Absolutely gorgeous trail and great video! You had me geekin' out over the history of the gorge. Lol! I'm definitely going to read more about that. The fog over the river, the asters, the bald eagles, perfect weather...such beautiful gifts! Thank you for sharing with us. The nighttime critter sound is a screech owl. I'm happy that you had a seemingly perfect adventure with zero type 2 fun 🙂 Nice t-shirt by the way. Lol! Until next time...

@@TheBane1979 I know of some flattish roads that would take you to Belington, but not sure the rest of the way into Elkins. I have no idea how road traffic is that way anymore either, but I can say when we go to visit my wife’s parents who live outside of Clarksburg, the traffic has gotten so much worse since I moved to Tennessee in 2006.
