    Can you design a treadle for this...sort of like a Rio Grande quill wheel?

  • @maggiepatterson7949
    @maggiepatterson7949 2 роки тому

    Would love for you to add a treadle to the wheel. See the Rio Grand wheel....YT videos. The treadle sits parallel to the wheel. spinner sits parallel to the wheel also. it is a spindle wheel also. the treadle is higher in the back...so you use your heel to push down.

    • @JunoUcan
      @JunoUcan Рік тому

      I know the Rio Grand! Rachel Brown was my hero. The problem is, on a wheel like this when you add a Treadle the wind on becomes a bit of a challenge. Her solution was to use “the flip”, but learning to do that causes a larger barrier to entry. If you operate it by hand the way people have always operated great wheels, you don’t have that problem. My other 2 popular wheels (the Dodec and the Porter Wheel) both face the spinner and have a treadle.

    So, the quills are interchangeable. I always assumed the narrow spindle/quill was for using as shuttle later, on a primative loom. Have also worked with a lazy kate set-up (cardboard box) when plying off my medieval removable whorl suspended spindles, but never thought of using them that way on a primative wheel. Have always wondered about the fixed whorls vs. removable whorls on hand spindles, and why some long past person would have chosen one over another.

    My husband just finished building this. Something is seriously wrong with the plans. The direction are not the clearest, and the measurements used for drilling are not common. After a week trying to get cuts correct and $200 on lumber and odd ball tools I have a non functional wheel. It will spin half way then immediately go backwards, undoing any work I had finished. Oh and the screws holding the bobbin, and wheel keep twisting loose, even with a stop bolt. At this point I could have went and bought one and been better off.

    • @JunoUcan
      @JunoUcan Рік тому

      Very sorry to hear that. I can address some of your issues. 1. I’m so sorry you have spent so much on materials. This wheel was designed to use a single 10 foot 1x4. When I made the plans in 2012 it cost $3. I’m sure it’s more now especially after the Pandemic, but I’d be surprised if it costs more than $10. I get that buying tools for this project can run up the cost, but I can’t do anything about that. As to why I make use of so many “Non standard” drill bit sizes… this project is using standard hardware (¼” axel bolt and dowel rod for the spindle) so the holes have to be precise. To big and the rotations get wobbly. To small and there is too much resistance in the rotation. 2. The fact that your wheel is not currently functioning at 100% might not be as telling as you fear. These wheels work better and better the more they are used and maintained. A lot of their function is dependent on the spindle and the axel being heavily waxed with paraffin. That’s not easy to do right off. You have to build it up with consecutive applications (like car wax or shoe polish). The good news is the wheel you’ve built might work really well after getting the proper Maintenance. I’ve done videos about this online, but I couldn’t put that all in the build instructions. I hope some of this helps and I’m sorry it’s been so frustrating.

    A square knot is what you’re showing. A granny knot is tying both knots in the same direction. That is as follows: square knot: right over left and under, then left over right and under. Granny knot: right over left and under, right over left and under. Granny knots don’t hold.

    • @JunoUcan

  • @Chaoticburn
    @Chaoticburn 4 роки тому

    My wife downloaded your PDF and instructions. To build the thing you have to have a drill, a few things to make the whole process easier and better build quality would be to ditch the brad nails. Those led to frustration and I almost abandoned the project. Instead, I drilled small pilot holes and used fine screws to hold the whole thing together. I still used wood glue for rigidity, but the screws were a lot easier to manage and it feels more solid. I've built two and both went together smoothly after this small change.
