Welcome to my channel! As a Gen-Xer, I'm passionate about eighties films and all the pop culture of that fascinating era. Here you'll find my two series: When Gen-X Ruled the Multiplex, in which I examine the films that shaped those of us who belong to the MTV Generation, and Miami Vice Changed Everything, an episode-by-episode breakdown of the stylish, groundbreaking, and highly influential 1984-1989 NBC series.
When Gen-X Ruled the Multiplex Ep.100: The Empire Strikes Back
In the final episode of this series, I'm looking at the much-loved second film in George Lucas's initial Star Wars trilogy, which was written by Leigh Brackett & Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Irvin Kershner.

I think the scene of Murphy getting shot is still the most brutally violent scene possibly ever. Murphy gets literally crucified like Jesus. This is because Paul Verhoven was trying to make a statement as far as who the American Jesus would be. And he realized he would be an actually morally good and pure human being that ends up being crucified while just trying to do his job as a police officer. Then when he would rise from the dead just like Jesus but in tune with the whole Detroit motor city America them as a manufactured corporate product that somehow overcomes his programming remembers who he is, and regains his humanity. Clearly at the end when he says his name is Murphy and walks out. This is to show that the head of the company doesn’t just view him as a product when he says the line, “That was some nice shootin’ son what’s your name?”
Why did we all watch this movie at like 6 or 7 years old?
I’m sorry, Murphy is shot only several times? They blow his hand off and his arm off and shoot him in the chest and legs all with pump action shotguns close to 20 times. Then Red shoots Murphy in the head and breaks his foot off in his ass lol
Vice has a thing for killing off characters named Eddie..
Gen Z here. My mother absolutely loved this movie. I love her.
Some Kind of Wonderful is better than Pretty in Pink.
This movie convincing us that Jeff can dance is always hilarious
"I love the Smiths. That is not music for stripping." 😂
Come onnnn...you're just gonna gloss over Jason Patric's father is the same guy who played ibe of the main priests, in The Exorcist..?
This movie sucks. It's so stupid. The woman is killed at a traffic stop five feet away from a cop? Then it ends with a call back so obvious and forced it literally replays the same scene. The acting is so wooden and forced. It's just a bad film all around. Even the sound editing is bad.
I really liked this episode on the show's original run, possibly because it followed some clunkers, but mainly because it could have fit into season 2 seamlessly. It would be one of the final episodes to grab me back then. Honestly, I'm enjoying your analysis more than the episodes by now. It's obvious that you have a script writing background. Well done.
We still miss you Morgan💯💯💯
One of the best episodes ever for the TV series, Jack Kehoe (RIP) from "The Sting" Crockett, Castillo and Malone discussing Malone's retirement,at the end of the episode music is Jan Hammer title "Night Talk"
Up the Irons! Still around 😅 The final scene really feels tacked on. In previous seasons he would be dead
SKOW was a FAR better mobie
When can't spell tough correctly, its got to be good.
“Poison’s ‘Rock n’ Roll All Night’ “ ???
The movie is about the transition from boyhood to manhood. In order to become an adult, mommy’s egg needs to crack. It’s biblical, it’s great here.
I honestly like the song. It is a bit corny, but so isn't a TON of 80s r&b. Great episode ending.
Pepe Serna is hilarious in this episode! “More breadsticks!!”
Seen them both in the theater. SKOW was far superior in my opinion. Girlfriend always thought Duckie was a stalker. Deutch stated on multiple occasions that Keith was always Stolz so the McCarthy reference was inaccurate also Ringwald was offered Amanda Jones not Watts. Agreed on some holes in the script though. Deutch said Hughes had written SKOW complete before PIP shot.
Wow, I must have slept through everything after the introduction of Lithgow in the asylum. "Laugh while you can, monkey boy."
Top 10 of all time for sure❤
Throwing away their badges after they realized they were fighting shadows in the dark was perfect. What an end of upbeat 80s🦩🌴🚗 giving way to the bleak 90s. Thank you for all the great content Morgan. Your insights into each episode was a side by side journey for us along with watching the series.💟
This episode wasn't even included when you buy the box set of the first season. Which is criminal because this was one of the best episodes in the entire series. William Russ was fantastic.
This was my favorite TV show as a teenager.
I loved this movie. I have the Soundtrack.
The night scene where Castillo gets out of his extremely cool car with his awesome sunglasses is for me one of the ultimate cool Miami Vice moments.
The plot line is the truck drive Wilson that was killed in the beginning was his son ,,, definitely a awesome episode to watch.
I miss your videos buddy. Where’d you go? Doing something else obviously
I finally watched A Boy and His Dog. I dunno where to begin lol.
So bad and no Crockett
This episode has a lot going on. Pretty good
Thanks for this! I didn’t like free fall when it was broadcast and I don’t like it now.
Also didn't he lose all his savings in the miniature cow phony scheme to that fraudster..
Great looking episodes which i would have loved to be a two-parter. Much more to explore in this story. And Crockett and Tubbs just disappear after a while. But they get their glorious night shoot-out from behind the Testarossa. Classic Vice imagery 👌
Excellent video.
This episode was in the ballpark of Rated-R & was unnecessarily violent towards women.
This episode had such an early 90s aura around it. Vice unintentionally conveyed that the 90s had begun & these were the twilight episodes of the 80s decade of high.
That daytime Testarossa sequence in the streets of sunny Miami was amazing. Reminded me od S1 Vice.
Morgan, you rock. I hope you are doing well.
They Shoot Horses??? what. Was she 10 at the time?
And now we finally have a mediocre sequel
I quiet like her banter and persona. It was mostly Crockett that was bummed with his assignment and pretty rude to her. She was mostly getting even with him in a more playfull way.
I thought they were going for an enemies to lovers trope but at 10X speed.
This episode is so silly & bad but it funny tho🤣
This episode was ahead of it's time. Things like this haven't changed but only gotten worse. With the rise of the manosphere recently, men have actually livestreamed such violence against women for views & walked away with minimum consequences. Also glad Trudy said that art like this perpetuates violence. Agree with you rating for this episode. 🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩
Hope all is well...haven't seen a new review in two years from you.
Hey this ep predicted how the richest celebs are all about GoFundMe instead of donating. Bill Bob Proverb was weird mix of cult & influencer😅
Season 3 onwards was awful. Dick wolf killed the show and could never capture its electricity that Mann created.
