  • A look at Sir Alan Parker's 1980 drama about the lives of students at Manhattan's High School of Performing Arts, which spawned a popular spin-off television show, a reality series, a musical, and a remake, and inspired numerous other television shows and films about teens striving for their big break in show business

I'm seventeen years old, Gen z, and when I watched this film last year it became my favorite film because it was the most realistic, relatable movie I've ever seen. Most teem films involve lots of "crudity" I'd say, and this one was weirdly much more innocent while also acknowledging the social issues and everyday issues teens deal with.

I really enjoyed your review of the movie. Although I did watch the series from time to time, I’ve always remained a fan of the movie. It’s something about grit of NY during that time that added so much to the movies of the 70’s & 80’s.

Never saw any of the Fame franchise but heard the song on the radio as a kid. I think I'll check it out. I am excited about Clue; one of my all time favorites.

I am loving your reviews, especially since I'm a Gen X'er! I loved this film, but saw it later since I was still pretty young when it came out. I actually wanted to go to the high school of performing arts, but my parents wouldn't let me because it was too rough. Keep up the great content!

I remember the TV series more than anything.

I thought it was a great touch to give Doris the Rocky Horror experience; years and years later we'd see Emma Watson's character also enter that world in The Perils Of Being A Wallflower. Thanks for the look back, Morgan -- already looking forward to next week!

Yes!! I was hoping you'd do this one. I was a dance kid back in the day (still am, I guess, just got a little grey in the ballet bun these days) so I love everything Fame related!
    Well done, Morgan!

Thank you, Terri! I can't dance, but Fame was crucial to my childhood.

I remember this movie feeling like it had no gloss or lyricism about it. It just felt choppy and messy and grimy and gross. The previews excited but sitting in the theater I felt hugely disappointed. I would have chalked it up to realism but I couldn’t even do that because of the fantastic and wholly improbable lunchroom and street numbers.

PS I'd love to see a review of The Hunger (1983) since it's a totally Gen X inspired vampire film. I just re-watched it and the visuals are stunning, though there are a few gaping plot points. Happy new year!
