I saw this when I was eight, and was obsessed with cemeteries for quite a while after that.

Great review...now I have to spend more time going back and watching it again. I had forgotten that JoBeth Williams was in this movie. Of course she is best know for her role in teachers. This is a fantastic movie and much like the original When a Stranger Calls it does have a great deal of since-less killing and such. Great job as always and have a fantastic weekend.

I knew her best in this film! This film terrified me at 10 years old

Such a great film, and like you I love the little bits of humor thrown in, like the dad lying in bed reading the book about Reagan (while high off his ass). It was just so early '80s suburbia!
And the "terrifying skeletal creature" at 8:02 STILL scares the crap out of me!

We had a subdivision developed near us, about 15 years ago, and the land previously had a small cemetery on it. I remember thinking, "Hope they moved the bodies!"
Fun fact: I read that they used real skeletons in the pool scene, as apparently fake ones cost more.

That is true they were quite real, exporting of human remains wasn't outlawed until a few years later matter of fact it was India's biggest export for years, skeletons for medical research purposes.

It's true! I briefly considered relating an anecdote in this video about how he and his wife came back to Spokane to talk to a bunch of us aspiring youngsters at a theater-arts workshop and how he was maybe a little bit of a dick, but I decided against it. It was over thirty years ago, and he was probably fine. I hope you're well, Alex; I was in Spokane briefly in August for the LC reunion, though I did not, in fact, make it to the damn reunion. But Spokane looked great!

I never realized JoBeth Williams was in this, The Big Chill, and The Day After (was she the mom who tried to explain sex to her daughter? for some reason that scene stuck with me) - three very big films to me personally. I have spent the last 10 minutes ruminating on how much I couldn't stand the people in The Big Chill and I realize now that was the point. Of course this along with Indiana Jones and maybe the Dark Crystal are what I think about when remembering my (glorious if awkward) pre-HS years.

Its inevitable to associate this film as inspiration for Stranger Things.
