Demasi’s Log Cabin
Приєднався 20 лют 2022
Hello all,
Welcome to my channel, I have recently changed my career path from my job of 11 years as a high school PE teacher, and am now following a dream I have had, building Log Cabins by hand. I am currently on my second build! My first build turned out better than I could have expected, but am hopeful the second build can meet those expectations!
Thank you for watching!

If you have the material, I'd box around the tree with a nice log bed. The same knotch you are using on cabin.idk, it's extra work, but definitely look professional.
That would be pretty sweet! Great idea
@DemasiLogCabin best of luck, my friend. You're living so many peoples dreams and getting it done.Great job.
I'm assuming you also screw these into the window frames and so on at the end of the logs ?
I did, but really if the logs are green it’s better to not screw into frames. Groove the logs and make a spline on the frame, so the green log can settle while seasoning
Your doorway footers are dangerously exposed to frost heave and very serious damage. Before backfilling and finish floor inside is the time to overcome this defect. If you could invest some time and funds now will save serious heartache I the future. How did this pass INSPECTION?
I appreciate the concern, How deep are my footers? What is the frost depth in my area? Without being an alarmist those would be my first questions for someone
Yes, filling around the base of the will kill it. You could build a retaining wall but it would be close to the house. Are you sure you want the tree that close to the house?
Thank you for the input, pretty awesome tree, be hard to get rid of
Merry Christmas, Cabin is looking great !
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Unfortunately, adding dirt up next to the tree will kill it over time. Anytime the root flair is covered, the tree suffocates and dies. Love your build!!
Thank you! And I also appreciate your input!
I ABSOLUTELY could not be more proud of you my dear Sonshine!❤️
Thank you 🙏 Mom!
That tree is a split-tree. It will look totally fine one day, and fall on your house the next. Also, for safety sake one should never have a tree within fifty feet of the home in a forest situation. One forest fire and you loose everything. My two cents, but I fought fires that took homes that a fifty foot buffer would have saved.
I appreciate your input!
Merry Christmas Ross and family! Looking forward to seeing you in the New Year! 🎄🎉
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
yes the tree will die, sorry
Thanks for the tip!
Seeing it all come together like that has to be a great feeling. Rolling with the punches too with the bit and sledge breaking haha exciting to see these walls go up. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Thank you! Really feeling good now! Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas🎉
Merry Christmas!!
This place is looking awesome. Have a Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Nice work this week Ross, did I miss how you are going to address what you are going to do when you run out of reach with the mini? I’m certain with proof in all your videos any obstacle that comes your way you always overcome. Merry Christmas to you and the family!
Thank you! You haven’t miss the reach “challenge,” I haven’t discussed it yet! I have a few ideas in mind but hesitate to discuss, I’m not sure which the best method will be! Merry Christmas to you too!
That will definitely kill That tree.
Thanks for the input!
If the OSB boards get wet, you have the first water damage before the house is even finished, why don't you protect them with special paint? Once they are soaked with water, I wouldn't want to have them installed again.
The subfloor I went with is water resistant for 200 days, payed a little extra, because I knew it would be exposed for a little while.
That pine tree is what they call codominant trees they are danger trees they grow in a split and will come down in wind and snow storms they are beautiful but do you want to get cabin built and take a chance on tree coming down a messing up your build after your done building it? Me personally I'd cut it down now before you regret not doing it in the future..
I appreciate the tip, I did take that into consideration when building the cabin, I have the cabin just out of the estimated fall radius of the one side of the tree. So if it does come down, hopefully isnt on the roof!
Putting a slightly hollow (concave) grind on the face of your sledge will make driving the rebar easier.
Might do that! Lot of rebar left to place, thanks for the tip!
By the way a split trunk is already a weak tree and prone to disease starting in that crotch. Just not a good idea.
Thanks for the tip, such a nice shade tree though, ill try to keep it alive
That tree is way too close to your cabin. It will only get bigger over time. Dumping needles on your structure and sending roots under your footings. Trees are nice but not within the area where they can reach the building now or in the future. Too close and they also represent a huge fire hazard. Wildfires and wind can be scary enough but trees are candles. Too close to the house is foolish. They also make a highway for critters to get into your house. Limbs can tear up the siding......etc. etc.
Thanks for the input, it’s a Beauty of a tree, going to try to keep it for now, and take it down later if it causes problems.
Get yourself a two inch dia. piece of cold roll two inches long and drill a hole in the center just a little bigger than your rebar about one inch deep. Put it on the "nail rebar " it becomes a cap. Much easer to drive the "nail".😉
Not a bad idea! Thank you
I use one to drive survey pins at property corners. Saves hammer handles!😂
Merry Christmas. Can’t wait to see the progress on the next video
Thank you! Can’t wait to get back at it! Merry Christmas!
This was so super exciting!!! you are the bomb!!!! I hope the family is loving what you are doing!!
Thank you Kristin! Very high praise!! have a great weekend!
Merry Christmas! Great progress over the last two weeks it's really coming on. All I'll say about auguring through greenwood with a power drill is that it creates an awful lot of heat which weakens the shaft especially if your drill speed is high. Also get an auger bit with a long cutting screw. That will clear the hole as you cut more efficiently so reducing heat build up and cutting efficiency. Slow and steady is the name of the game. In fact I'd suggest you go back to a hand brace! It may take 4 or 5 minutes per hole, but it's cheaper than buying new bits every couple of days!
Merry Christmas to you too! If I go thru another bit or two I might be in the market for a hand auger! Thanks for the tip
Merry Christmas and have a happy holiday with your family and you crack me up every time I watch your videos You’re doing a fantastic job too.
Gotta have some fun with it right! 😆 Merry Christmas to you too!
Impressive progress!
Thank you James!
Merry Christmas great job 👍😎🏴
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Thought this might have been a good channel for a log cabin build!! My mistake, the worst I have seen ever
Ouch! Can’t make everyone happy 😃
You could always cut a 55 gallon drum put it around the base of the tree, giving it some room and put your dirt up against that as an option
Not a bad idea, thanks for the input!
@ or build a wooden box 2 feet high around the tree creating a a well almost like an egress window basement window. That way you could still raise the level of the ground between the tree in the house, but you’d leave space around the base of the tree.
Coach! I didn’t even read the whole user name when responding earlier! Hahah hope you are doing well, Merry Christmas to you and the family!
Google how to girdle a tree. All kinds of information.
Thanks for the tip
Merry Christmas Ross!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you too!
Use some of those large rocks that you’ve dug up along the way and build a retaining wall around the base of the tree. Then backfill between the house and the retaining wall.
That’s a great idea! I appreciate it!
The roots from that tree will get into the house don't risk it
through the concrete?!
@DemasiLogCabin they will eventually make cracks in the foundation
thanks for the input!
@DemasiLogCabin no good luck keep trucking on you're doing great
Thank you!
Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family 🎉❤.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
I’d recommend a ring of boulders or landscape wall block around that tree and grade from the house out against the tree ring.
Thanks for the tip! I may try that!
Looks great. Hope you have a great Christmas, God bless!
Thank you! God Bless and Merry Christmas to you too!
Good job. And Merry Christmas. Greetings from Rotterdam the Netherlands
Thank you! Merry Christmas!!
Super tough work, with the added aggravation of chasing tools, with seems to be a big part of building. It was for me building my horse farm from ground up. Merry Christmas to you and family. 🐻
Thank you! Always something! Merry Christmas!!
My first comment on your channel! I've been enjoying the build since the beginning and am glad to see the first logs being installed permanently. The answer to your tree question is - YES - if you cover the roots close to the natural ground level the tree will eventually die. May take a year or two, but it will die.
I appreciate the tip and comment! Always like hearing from new people! Thank you!
Hope you and the family have a Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 Keep on keeping on Semper Fi
Thank you Grunt! Early comment this time around! Merry Christmas!
When the hammer broke, I was like, Oh my goodness!! Another very entertaining video, Ross. Merry Christmas to you and your family and to All of your viewers! 🎄🎄
Darn tools! Saw/hammer/drill bits! All in the last couple weeks! Thanks as always Clayton! Have a Merry Christmas!
Looking real good, merry Christmas Ross and to your family as well from 🇦🇺Melbourne, going to be 30degrees Celsius Xmas day and 37 Boxing Day, enjoy your cold
Thank you!! Actually reached 60/15 here today! Of course I’m off today, weather must know my schedule! 😆keep cool and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, happy new year! My wood shop teacher used to put bar soap on drill bit to use it as a lube. See if that might work for you? Awesome progress sir!
I appreciate the tip, and Merry Christmas to you too!
Your determination awesome! Merry Christmas
Thank you! Merry Christmas!!!
I think I'll just drag it over. 😆🤣
😆🫣🫣🙄
If you cover the root ball it will rot!
Thanks for the tip!
Merry Christmas....Your getting it dialed in. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Ray, and Merry Christmas!
So happy to see logs going down. Merry Christmas
Long time coming! Merry Christmas!
