Top 3 lures for pike - Month of May
As the Spring brings longer days and warmer temps, and the pike start to feed again after spawning and May can be one of the best times of the year for lure fishing.
Using baits such as the Westin Swim, or other shallow minnow style jerkbaits can be deadly in shallow weedy water
But also don’t discount large soft plastics such as the Westin Bullteez as the post spawn pike can be aggravated by large baits early in the month and later in May they’re often hungry and looking for a large meal

    Thanks Thom brilliant explanation of the rods and reels needed. Just purchased a westin w3 finesse 7 foot 1'' 2g-10g rod, took it out for a test drive so to speak at the weekend. I'm using a small reel with 8 pound braid then a 6 pound floracarbon leader tied to a small snap swivel so i could change between small jig and spinners. I had 2 deasent perch and a small pike on but sadly lost all three. Where am i going wrong?

    • @Thomhuntfishing
      @Thomhuntfishing 2 місяці тому

      There’s many reasons fish can come off the hook…. Bad luck being the first! Make sure your hooks are sharp and for a 10g rod they need to be fairly small and light wire. If the hook is too big or too thick wire you will struggle to set it properly on the strike. Also make sure the strike is firm, especially with pike as they have bony mouths. If you were using a steady winding retrieve for say a spinner, as the bait is moving constantly sometimes they peck a lot so hook sets are not great. If you get bites on the pause these ones usually stay on!

    • @ianhart1593
      @ianhart1593 2 місяці тому

      @Thomhuntfishing thanks Thom for the reply. I struggled with what was a bite and what was a snag. When the fish hit the lure it just felt like i was hitting some hair weed so i didn't poetically know when to strike or not. Is this just a thing ill learn as i go or just strike at everything 🤔.

    • @Thomhuntfishing
      @Thomhuntfishing Місяць тому

      @@ianhart1593 yes you’ll learn the difference to what is a bite and what isn’t the more experience you get. A lot of it comes down to understanding the lures, how they feel, how deep they go and how to control them etc. one thing I see a lot of people doing is twitching the rod constantly when lure fishing. This makes it difficult to feel what’s going on. Keep the rod steady and use the reel to wind/pause and then when you get a bite it will be more pronounced

    Never thought of hook wire thickness vs rod power. Makes sense why japanese minnow twichbait wobbers have fine wire hooks: those are cast with 7-28g rods usually. You do go light in comparison, I pikefish 50-150g baitcaster and 15-60g spinning setup, which I want to swap for baitcaster setup. Westing 16cm shadteez in Bass Orange is my goto in the brown waters of my area. I have tried 12cm now as well. ShadTeez are good lure, but they do disintegrate literally after one 70-80cm pike. Great video, im from Sweden, and here we use mostly Fluo, I would say 90% of the times, the other 10% is when fishing jerkbaits or hairdbaits without a spoon/lip, there we use Ti wires. Me myself was using Fluo for more then 10 years but have recently changed, today I fish TI 60lbs wire for my Jerkbaits (or "pure hardhats without spoon") and for everything else I use a stainless steel wire 60lbs, I only use Fluo today when I want to throw a lure that maximize my recommended casting weight on the rod. Why not Fluo for me? well after 25+ years of fishing I have changed leader materials countless of times and just as a fly line and their leaders, tapering and diameter is an important factor. Casting a 1-1,5mm Fluo leader, or even thicker if you go Mono is to stiff and thick for it being comfortable, and you don't feel the rod loading as it should, when going with a SS wire or TI wire I like the thickness and flexibility more and I can feel my rod loading better meaning better connection with my bait/lure, Fluo being thick and being able to stretch is the total opposite. Another downside with fluo is simply that if it gets damaged it starts to peel off and you need to change leaders, for me I went through a spool of 50m 1,2mm Fluo during the summer, and following summer I used a total of 3 SS wires and 1 TI wire. In the end it comes to preference, this is what I discovered after all my tears fishing, the important aspect is that you choose what you like the most, one thing to note is do not always think of what "looks better for the fish" and thing of ergonomics some times as well.

    Brilliant Thom Ty.... It's awesome to have someone like you to do almost all of the thinking for me when I'm going through various scenarios I encounter...I instantly think Thom Hunt will have covered this somewhere and to your channel I go lol. And then once I have watched the video that covers the circumstances a couple of times everything makes perfect sense and then off I go to put it into practice. You have given me many "Oh Yeah" moments whilst watching.

    what do you mean "Li ion is *very expensive* "? A 20Ah is ~200$. For the money we spend on reels, rods, lures, technology itself + the FUEL, it sounds fair.

      Made this video 4 years ago when it was very expensive, and even though prices have come down, compared to a standard SLA battery of the same spec, LiPo4 is still roughly twice as expensive so yeah given the choices on the market it’s an expensive option
