On December 7, 1941, the Japanese caught America by surprise at Pearl Harbor. As ships burned and bombs fell, a lone American seaplane took off at the hands of a newly commissioned Naval officer, Ensign Wes Ruth, and turned north on a flight that nearly changed the history of World War II. In recent weeks, Ukraine has started using HARM missiles to take down Russian air defenses. Yet with only older Soviet-made aircraft in its air force, that shouldn’t be possible - the electronics are incompatible and to reengineer Western kit onto their planes would take years of work. So how was it done? Well, it turns out you can blame it on Top Gun - not Tom Cruise, but the real thing. PLEAS...

The tale of when Lt. Bruce W. Carr, USAAF, supposedly was shot down and stole a German Fw 190A fighter plane to fly back to his base is a popular one. It even inspired the recent Hollywood film "Top Gun: Maverick".... Too bad it's an urban myth. The real story, however, is funny and, well, let’s just say that “boys will be boys” - even in wartime. It wasn't exactly Lt. Carr's finest hour.... NO...

    Western european countries will never take the russian threat seriously because they think they are safe by distance and they never been under russian controll so they can't understand. SO the european countries that have a border with Russia need to make their own alliance and mass produce their own weapons including nukes. if underdeveloped countries North Korea and South Africa made their own nukes decades ago, without having any prior civilian nuclear experience, how fast can japan, South Korea, and european countries that have had civilian nuclear power reactors for 50+ years, especially now that russian tv all day every day threatens EU with nuclear strikes

      We often talk about the breakout time from current status to nuclear weapons armed -- for Iran, that's measured in weeks. For countries like Japan, South Korea, and other European nations, it is probably measured in months.

    You will see many comments here and elsewhere that the Marviken (R4) facility was a failure and therefore never started. The truth is that it was an entirely political decision. The politicians blamed the technology, to take the focus off the fact that they themselves wasted billions unnecessarily. Also, don't forget that the US kept wanting us to build more fighter jets, instead of reinventing the wheel…

    I stopped watching after 7 minutes. This video is full of missinformation, conspiracy theories and made up material. Sweden never had a singular nuclear bomb. There was a program, and there was a test with massive amounts of conventional explosives as a case study of how to see how blast vaves works. That is it. The Viggen was not designed to cary a nuclear bomb. The SAAB 36 Vargen was however a bomber that was supposed to deliver Swedish nuclear bombs, but it never left the idea stage. sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_36

    • @HistoricWings
      @HistoricWings Місяць тому

      Arguably, the world is safer with fewer nuclear-capable countries -- it isn't a desire to flex nuclear muscle on the part of the UK, French, USA, or Israel, it is the desire to ensure that all adversaries fully understand and appreciate that there is no victory in a war against them. One could argue, for instance, that Israel has avoided repetitions of the "wars of national survival" that had come before it had nuclear weapons. Once their program had proved the technology, none of the surrounding Arab states was willing to start a major war.

    • @simtexa
      @simtexa 29 днів тому

      @@HistoricWings If they want to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons they should get rid of their own. It's the equivalent of a big scary guy with four different automatic guns, eight pistols and a literal grenade launcher telling you you really shouldn't own a pistol, while he is holding a fully loaded AR with the safety off. Then he says you can "compromise", and in exchange for throwing away one of his 3 Glocks, you must swear to never own any weapons whatsoever. Sure, maybe it's arguable better if fewer people had weapons either way, but it's still extremely hypocritical for any nuclear armed country to argue against nuclear weapons without getting rid of their own.

      Yes, the Tunnan shares some similarities with Kurt Tank's designs.

      Yes, that's a point I've heard. As I wrote in reply to another comment, I believe that Putin would still have attacked Ukraine even if it had retained its nuclear weapons arsenal.

    Swedes are arrogant people who have in the past tried to invade Russia. They have always shown contempt toward the Russians and looking down upon them. Since the inception of Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine, Sweden has actively been involved by supporting the corrupt government of Ukraine and supporting Ukrainan Nazis.

      Very few realize it, but the Swedish fighter planes are named after BIRDS! What is this bird called in your language? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tufted_duck

      Swedes really object when Americans mispronounce the name of the aircraft as Vig (rhymes with "big") Unn.

    Bull "worlds 4th largest nuclear nation." ?? By virtue of becoming the 4th nation to possess nuclear arms? "the effort rivaled the Manhattan Project in its scale(!!), sophistication and engineering." Nonsense. this is just wild speculation far removed from reality.

      Per capita, in terms of manpower and budget. Think it through.

    Thank you so much for the background on this famous poem. My father used to keep this poem posted on his wall in his office. It was one of his favorites. I plan on reading it in his memorial service in a few weeks.

      On a per capita basis, certainly it did. On a per capita budgetary basis too. Massive project for a country that had a population at the time of around 5 million.

    ... It sounds to me the whole thing was real but was a massive BLUFF. ... The research and development could have been real but never enough to actually make a device; it was rather a “technological monitoring“ operation to keep the country ready in case the need would become more pressing. There could also easily have been stores of dummy warheads and all sorts of facilities set to look like they could be linked to produce or service real weapons. And I guess there could be organised “leaks” aimed at warning the Soviet that there could be the real thing ready to fire.

      @HistoricWings 29 днів тому

      They were not bluffing. It was a large-scale government project with a unified goal.

      Tiny compared to the USA, Russia, or China. I should have made myself clear. Given the number of comments received on the phrase "tiny", I believe I have found an overly sensitive spot in the Swedish psyche with this.
