SEA SICKNESS THE BIG CHALLENGE EP 22
SEA SICKNESS
Managing the Challenge in the Greek Aegean
@Sailing Adventures with Grandad
A year after taking my partner Isabel on our planned shakedown cruise in Mallorca that became “The Shakedown Cruise from Hell” in Ep3 , we departed for Athens and Pueto Heli in Greece for our second attempt at a romantic cruise aboard Vayu.
Ive learned that Sea Sickness is something to take seriously and be managed with care. Its not hard but for a sailor who will sail in any weather its important to STOP take great care should to help those who suffer from sea sickness so they too can enjoy the beauty of cruising. That is all this episode is all about. Enjoy!
This channel of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle. After the mentioned shakedown, I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and have been in the Aegean for this whole season of 2023.
SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD are my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht Vayu. The people I travel with, the places we go, the times we have and my reflections on living this adventure.
Thanks for allowing this amateur storyteller the opportunity to share these little stories that require an imense effort. Your appreciation means a lot to me.
A lifetime sailor, practicing yogi, father of 4, grandad of 6, amateur chef, and thankful man. I live between Palma de Mallorca, Vayu my sailboat and Los Cabos Mexico. I share my life now with my beautiful partner Isabel who joins me sailing in this episode as we take on the challenge of Sea Sickness that can turn to Veritgo.
Thanks for coming along. Sailing like life… its all in the journey!
Thank you;
Michael

@@sailingadventureswithgrandad hi!
Beautiful! I found your channel through doing some research for a story I'm writing about sailing the Ionian sea. This is dreamily magical. Also, your storytelling is so entertaining! Thank you for sharing with us.
+@uma4492 Thanks Uma, very sweet of you to write.
In life you take the rough with the smooth and must be the smoothest grandad lol congratulations a valuable lesson to us all.
+@bodywood 😂😂I appreciate your insight…. Yes it was good work 👍
Hola Granddad😁 I hope you not going to stop making videos. Really enjoyable and makes me dreaming. Btw she is beautiful! (Vayu)😁
+@zoltantajti2128 😂😂 hola and thanks so much. Un abrazo fuerte!
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and gorgeous images. I find myself questioning time and time again whether to go to Greece and appreciate your suggestion to sail outside of the peak months of July and August but where do you leave your boat in the middle of high season? Any recommendations for that? Fair Winds! Eelco
+@eelcostoffels Hello Eelco! This year as last I use Porto Heli Marina as a base and do sail in the high season but not the so much the islands , due to the Meltemi and heat. I stay more along the coast of the Penepolese. The heat is a challenge and I’m not at all sure about next season. Good sailing and thanks for your interest 🙏
Great video, thx Michael! Best footage i have seen of the Corinth Canal on any sailing channel!
+@jacooosthuizen1886 Thanks Jaco! Cheers 🍻

+@alvaromunarriz3648 hahaha 👍🙏
Which weather app do you use Michael? ....and specifically in terms of Meltemi forecasts?
+@jacooosthuizen1886 Hello Jaco! Good to meet you. I use predict wind which is by subscription and my main go to. Then I also peruse others just to check like Meteo Blue. The local Greek forecasts I hear are also very good and free but I haven’t used them.

Ahoy Captain beautiful boat. What year and model is she?🫡🫡🫡
+@MrCiupol Ahoy, she is an X-442 , built in 2002, they are very well built yachts and I bought her in 2016 and could not be happier. She sails beautifully.
Ahoy capitan ! What's your plan this year ?
+@iluvthassos1971 Hahaha… Porto Heli to Dodecanese with my 11 year old kiwi grandson Saxon and my sailing mate Javi from Mallorca. Then the coast of Turkey before a return to Mallorca for next winter. 🙏👍
@@sailingadventureswithgrandad I can't wait.

Hi Michael ! This year If you are still in Greece you can try Sithonia, Chalkidi. Many places to visit. Stay safe !
+@iluvthassos1971 Hello! I’ll make sure to check them out 🙏
Marina fees can be insane eg 100 euros a night in Hvar Croatia. Do they come alongside in a little boat and offer food water and diesel like they do in Turkey??. That way you dont need Marina so often...
+@Kevin-zz9nc Greece has few of these overly expensive marinas. Enjoy.. fair winds 🙏
Totally agree with everything. Pleasant travels ahead !
+@iluvthassos1971 Thank you 🙏 appreciate you following along. 👏
Thank you ,look forward to more . Did you sail the Ionian islands ? Lee
+@leepluke8556 Thanks Lee, of the Ionians only the west coast of Kefalonia and then on to the bay & town of Lepanto or today Nafpaktos, and on to the gulf of Corinth and the canal.
Lovely work granddad your grandsons are proud 🎉
Thanks champ! I need lessons from a great cinematographer like you 👍🙏

Construction began: 1881 Date of first use: 25 July 1893 Not exactly ANCIENT GREECE
Yes you are correct about the canal itself, but the origins of Corinth, the overland route before the canal go back millenniums as it was an overland trading passage & Corinth a major trading center for the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
Hola Michael! Gracias por tus vídeos. Por favor, ¿podrías indicarme cual es la posición de las islas que aparecen en el segundo 0:14? Muchas gracias y ojalá nos encontremos en alguna bahía por Grecia. Saludos

+@demetrisdemetrious8702 Hi Demetri, thanks for responding and sharing 🙏
It had to be the meltemi I was a charter skipper there for a few years. I met the melted many times, for cruisers I always.s say start in the North of Greece, and sail south over the summer,
+@davidwarnes5158 Yes the meltemi can drive you nuts. Hahahaha
Happy New Year Mr. Domecq! May you have the best year ever! Thanks for taking us along!
+@maryohara1604 🤣Happy New Year 🙏😘
Agree totally. The Meltemi drove me nuts . Reaching to Mykonos with 47 knots on the instruments. 12 days straight with no respite even at night . I appreciate the Ionian much more now.

Hello Michael, Thanks for taking me on the journey. I'm really enjoying the vlog, so keep them coming, please.. I'm a sailor from Australia, I'm now retired, and it's always been a bucket list dream to sail the Mediterranean. How do you find solo sailing? I'm looking at purchasing a yacht in Greece, in May, we'll looking when I get there. How do you find solitary life on the sea. Do you meet alot of other solo sailors on your adventures, and how do you navigate the Schengen rules do you bounce around the EU? Kind regards. Fair winds and following Seas ⛵️
Hi Magzie… thanks for following… I don’t live aboard full time… solo sailing is beautiful but I have concluded that I enjoy sharing and company … I’m Spanish and my boat is registered and vat paid in Europe so no issues…. Great idea to buy in Greece… just a fantastic and quite easy place to sail. Just need to dodge the Meltemi winds but there are so many bays you can always find cover. Welcome aboard and good luck with your project… definitely do it 👍
@sailingadventureswithgrandad Cheers, thanks mate. Look forward to the next episode.
