hi danny! can you imagine to carve a yellowbass or walleye or pike? these are my favorite fishes. i dont know wheter they as popular as here in europe🤷🏼♂️ anyways.. even if not. always good videos, hope youre fine. greetings marvin🍻
Hi Marvin, I’m doing good thanks for asking. I’ve already carved a walleye a while back and I have a video series on it here. It was pretty much a practice run but I plan on doing another at some point. I’m not sure what you are referring to for yellow bass. The yellow bass we have here in the states are small only growing less than a pound (.4kg ) and are considered trash fish. So I don’t think many people would be interested in a carving of one. If I carve a pike it will be further down the road. There’s still a lot of popular local fish that I have on my “to do list” first and in the south here pike are not as popular as they are in the northern states.
May be a stupid question, but Im assuming you are carving tupelo wood, where do you purchase your blanks?
Yes it’s Tueplo. I carve the blanks my self here’s the video showing that process ua-cam.com/video/l9LphVQmXpU/v-deo.htmlsi=yQsTryH6Aoj5ToWX
@@Danny_Harris-Arts sorry I meant the blocks of tupelo wood.

Hi Danny love your work Iam in Nova Scotia Canada and wondering if you would ship to here

I'm glad it's an option to make your own eyes. You can't find pickerel eyes anywhere online. They're very integral to the whole fishes personality
I have a more in depth video of the process.
This is by far the best paint schedule teaching of a brown trout well done Danny nicely explained and very in-depth

Good I hope to see you there! You definitely have plenty of time to get a couple done. Be sure and join our new FB group Fishcarving Inspiration and post progress photos.
Love catching those Ky spots we have a lot of them here in Ohio river creeks, aggressive too! Can't wait to see this build.
Yeah they are definitely scrappers. I hope to get some done on it tomorrow
Hi Danny. Gene here from Iowa , We have talked a few times I might be interested in this. I missed the Iowa city show this year, maybe next time. Thanks for the Info - Question Do I need a invite to this facebook group?
Hi Gene. No invite needed but you can invite other friends or just give the name, just do a search for “Fishcarving Inspiration” and click the join. I need to put a link in the description but i forgot to do it. 😖 There are two brief questions and there should be a box to check to acknowledge the rules and you’re in.

Thank you for the kind words and happy to hear from you. If you are a Facebook user by chance, several other of my fish carving friends and I have started a Facebook group dedicated to fish carving. We love for you to join if you do Facebook that is. But we’d love to see your work and you can post photos of it and ask any questions you may have. I hope the nichrome wire works for you let me know how it goes.
Did I miss the part on the process to harden the tips?
Yeah i think you did. Once you get the tips made and burning even and clean scale impressions turn the burner all the way up so that the tip will glow red for a few seconds then turn it off and let it cool on it’s on. You may also take a small butane torch and heat just the tip until it glows red.
AWESOME video! I'm getting ready to burn a snake and this info will be invaluable!!! Thanks so much.
Depending on the snake species you’re carving some have keeled scales and others are smooth. Razortip has a decent selection of snake scale tips with some that make keeled scales. Have you ever watched Mike Stinnett of Stinnett Sticks?
I would love to know where you get that tupelo if you are willing to let your secret out ofc, been looking for tupelo that meets the sizes I need but it as been extremely hard!
Send me an email and I’ll give you the contact info
👍👍👍👍👍
where do you get your patters and wood? looking for basswood.
I draw a lot of my own patterns but I have some that were given to me. Send me a email and let me know what you’re looking for. I may have a digital version that you can print. I don’t know if the guy I get mine from carries basswood. I can text him and see. Send me an email and I’ll let you know asap.
Danny ! ton excellant travail me pattionne. Grand bonjour de la France!
Bonjour! that’s all the French I know😜. Thanks you and thanks for watching. It’s always nice to hear from people from other countries!
Congratulations Danny! Now I’m glad I didn’t enter on the novice cause I would have been the only one and that’s no competition lol. Thanks for all you do and I can’t tell enough how much your experience has helped me really plan out what I want to accomplish. You’re the man! And I hope to see you at the next one!
Thank you I appreciate that I’m glad they’re helping. Im not 100% sure but I think in the case of only one entry they would have moved you to intermediate. We are working on a plan that I will outline in the next few video projects that will help raise awareness for the fish carving side of the competition. The fish carving organizers, judges and a few of us competitors have formed a new Facebook group called “Fish Carving Inspiration” that we hope will raise awareness for the Fish Carving division of the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship. So if you do Facebook come join us. We’re still in the growing and formatting stage but it will definitely formatted strictly for fish wood carving. So hopefully current fish wood carvers or those that have started or thinking about carving fish will join and hopefully we can encourage them to come and enter the 2026 World. Hope to see you there. (In the group AND the next World competition)
Brilliant job
Thanks
You making fish or birds? The sawdust sure was flying 😁 can't wait to see the whole process. Very cool.
🤣😂Two large mouth bass.
Hey Danny I have been learning the hobby form my neighbor but I have a tip I thought you might like. Instead of having to tape the pattern back on you do what you did originally and draw it on butttt when using the band say you draw two lines on the top part of the fish more in the middle so it should leave a 2 to inch spot where you do not cut it. So you do the top like normal but if you go from the nose you stop at the middle same for the other side and for the tail. That way it doesn’t fall off then you cut the actual fish pattern off and when your done all you do is just cut the two spots you didn’t right through and it pops off. Sorry that was super confusing if you need more just reply.
No it makes sense, that’s a good tip. I’ve also seen other guys use hot glue to temporarily glue the pieces back together and it works really well. I’ve done it before. I just got the idea to tape it because I forgot to bring out my hot glue gun one time and I had a roll of painters tape handy and it worked well. My band saw is a cheap piece of crap so when I get on a cutting roll i just go to the end. Because of the cheap saw blade guides it’s hard to back out of the cut. One of these days I plan on buying a nice Pegasus bandsaw that uses a scroll type blade and it allows you to make some very intricate cuts
Such a precious little fellow. Your paint colors are what makes it come alive. Thanks for sharing. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽
This was my first attempt. I’ll probably be doing another one later this fall hopefully. Should be even better.
Awesome job! I have one that is almost ready for paint. Could you post a list of colors used? it would be very helpful.
I would if I could remember 🤪but I’ll try to recall and get close. Part 4 should have the colors I used. I don’t follow a set paint schedule like a lot of taxidermist or other fish carvers do. I used a silver base and started with cadmium yellow on the back down to the pink stripe. and then I started layering olive greens in progressively darker shades until I got the hue and darkness I was looking for. The pink stripe is true red sprayed very lightly over the silver so that it got to the pink hue I was looking for. I also sprayed a tiny line of a hint of blue under the pink strip about a third of the way back. I used duo blue Perl X powders to give it a slight blueish purple iridescence from the pink stripe down to where the belly turned white. I finished with several thin bronze washes on the back to match the trout I caught in the middle of the project. In part 4 it had a more olive green hue along the back and a silver that faded to Perl white on the belly. But after the trout fishing trip I added a faint pale gold bellow the pink line at faded to the Perl white. The thin bronze washes were made with gold mixed with burnt sienna if I remember correctly. I used That to glaze over the olive green back. Rainbow vary greatly in color and the number of spots and spot pattern depending on the region. Some are more green with fewer spots some like ones here in Arkansas in the white river have the bronzy/ green back with a pale gold sides below the pink stripe and are heavily spotted. Hope this helps some.
Awesome job on both the carving and the painting!
Thanks. It was my first one. I need to do a couple more. I feel like I can do better
awesome work man!!! love the song choice too 🔥🔥
Thanks, I thought it fit😜
Hi Danny Was there any other entires then what your video showed? Just cuious if there was a 100 entries or 1000. Congrats, on winning.
Yes, but I’m not exactly sure how many all together. I was always in the showroom at the wrong time. There were only 7-8 already set up when I got there, they made us leave as soon as we set up and we couldn’t go back in until after the judging so im not sure how many came after me. By the time I went in to see how I placed some guys had already picked up theirs up to head home. so I don’t know exactly how many entries there were in my division. I know there were no entries for the novice this year. But im guessing the intermediate had a dozen or so maybe? And I’m not sure how many were in the open. Probably a few more than intermediate. Several of the guys stayed for the round table discussion at the end and one of the things we discussed was starting a FB group for all the contestants past and present called “Fish Carving Inspiration” and hopefully get the attention of a lot of new members that are fish carvers and hopefully encourage them to consider entering in 2026 to help build the competition back to where it was pre Covid days when there were dozens of entries in each division. 2022 was the first one I entered and it was also the first one after Covid. There were a lot more entries in 2022 than there was this time for sure I do know that. I was in the novice then and there were probably two dozen in the novice alone and probably close to 100 with all 4 levels, youth, novice, intermediate and the Open. The Taxidermy side had a record turn out this year, So hopefully with this new FB group we can get the participation up for the Fish carving division in 2026. I’ll be talking more about this with future project videos and I’ll start with my next project if my wood ever arrives!! 😖
Congrats Danny pretty soon you'll be making the Masters sweat it out. Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks Ron, I’ve got two years to prepare and practice. Good thing is they are willing to give good pointers and advice in their critiques that will improve my work. I’m going to give it my best shot!
congratulations danny! 🏅 good work and a new other interesting type of video. cheers 🍻
Thanks man, I won’t do many videos like this one. This competition is only held every two years. It was a great experience this time as well as two years ago. I may have a similar one coming in January that I’m thinking about doing but I’m going to keep it a surprise.
@@Danny_Harris-Arts yes, I know the art is the maintheme at your youtubechannel but I also like the videos from you fishingtrips 👍👍 by the way : I caught a nice pike 2 days ago.. 85cm ( 33,5inch ) In the Main by Frankfurt I'll send you a picture
@@MURPHISH I’m sure I’ll be doing more fishing videos in the future. After all it is what drives my inspiration to carve fish.
Very nice job, congrats on the first place
Thank you. I had a blast
Danny have you tried Payne's Gray
A little bit mixed with cadmium yellow or cadmium lemon makes for some useful greens. I found that out by accident
Yes I use it quite a bit. I use it to make greens, I use a speck or two in white with a tiny touch of burnt umber so my whites aren’t so stark white. Mixed with a tiny bit of light yellow (almost white) then covered with several layers of a little white mixed with clear gloss medium to make a nearly transparent white and painted between fin spines makes a good color to fake translucent fins.
Yep
How do you seal the final piece, I’ve watched a few videos and I didn’t see a final seal of some sort?
I use minwax polyurethane satin and spray 3-4 thin coats letting each coat dry. It dries fast especially out in the sun or with a hairdryer.
@@Danny_Harris-Arts hey thank you for the reply, i watched a few more of your videos and saw that you used that spray can at the end, you were holding it in your hand and i saw just the letters mi and i figured it was minwax, keep on rockin'!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
So when it came to the inside of the mouth how did you make the gills flow in to the top of the mouth?
It was tough and had me pulling my hair at times. But I got them close by cutting wire bent in a gill shape and positioned them in their place as sort of a template. I did this for each gill. I then carved each gill and made the attachment point on each end a little longer so i could trim them a little at a time until they fit like I wanted. I then superglued them in place and used apoxie sculpt to blend the attachment points. I part way into making the gill and the fit and finish I questioned myself as to why i decided to do through the gill open mouth but I was the ONLY competitor that had an open mouthed fish in 2022 in the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship and it won me a best of show and first place in the novice division.
@@Danny_Harris-Arts hey hard work pays off, thats why you don't see many people do so much detail in the mouth, and I would say you knocked it out of the park with the detail, Im in the process of making a bass piece as we speak, it looking like its trying to eat a crawfish, been trying to think if I should do the open mouth thing or something similar to what you did with your latest bass
@@leviwatson9508 it’s got a small bluegill in its mouth. I think there’s a shot of it in the latest video I posted from my trip to the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship. If you do Facebook I post in between progress shots of each project and I have several photos of all the show pieces there. It’s called Wild Impressions Wood Carving By Danny Harris. I’ll be starting another bass project shortly as soon as my wood arrives. I’ll actually be doing two at one time. They are commission pieces. One will be eyeing down a crawfish and the other will be hot on the trail of a few shad
Good luck on the competition with the bass eating the bluegill
The bass got third and the bluegill got best in show and a 1st place ribbon😜
Danny very excellent job on that Bass I bought an airbrush but I think I'm going to hand paint it like you did with dry brush techniques and washes I'm going to start a chain pickerel this week. It should be interesting to say the least with all those markings on the flanks
Just take your time and build transparent color layers gradually. Wouldn’t hurt to use a satin clear coat through color layers.
Do you have any ideas to make the chains, I was thinking about some of those Q-tips and the sizes. The chains are actually a continuation of dots on the scales any advice would be appreciated
@@Danny_Harris-Arts that sounds like a good idea. I'll just build colors gradually than try and get it right the first time with too much paint. Thanks again for the tips
@@bluetsunami4005 I’ve never done a pike but I think after gessoing or priming you could paint a base layer of the local color of the spots over the whole body let it dry then Spray a thin coat or two of a mat or satin clear coat let it dry thoroughly. then use masking fluid ( it’s liquid latex) and use a small cheap paint brush or Qtip to paint the spot patten on with the masking fluid. Then paint the rest of the fish like you normally would with the greens and yellows. After you get it the color you want Then gently rub off the dried latex spots with you finger. Sometimes a pencil eraser works better at getting it started. and it’ll leave the underlaying spot color visible. Spraying the spot base color with a sealant will help avoid paint lifting off when you rub off the latex I buy several small cheap paint brushes because you can’t clean them and the latex will build up on them and they stop working well so I trash it and use a new one. The micro applicators work good for smaller areas but they quickly build up also. You can get masking fluid at any hobby store that sells artist paint and supplies. Hope this helps
Congratulations again Danny! You certainly did great. I think i am going to have to take you up on the invite/challenge to bring some of my work down to the show next year. Going to really have to step my game up from decoys over the next twelve months.
Great! They are only every two years so the next one won’t be until 2026 so you’ve got plenty of time. Be sure and keep in touch. If you do FB follow me on my wood carving page. It’s called Wild Impressions Wood Carving by Danny Harris. I post a lot of photos of progress of what ever project I’m working on between these videos here on the channel. And you can send me pics of your progress if you like. I’d like to see what you decide what to work on. I told myself I want to work on a duck or two and maybe a songbird here and there this fall.
@@Danny_Harris-Arts that will definitely give me some time to work. At one of the decoy shows I'm doing up here as a wall carving category. It's always mounted on a piece of drift wood, but this year it's 2 brook trout. The only down side is it's a purchase award, so the prize for first is $800 but they keep the piece. But I'm going to go for it and see how I do.
@@travishanson2884in the world competition for fish the judges really look at the artistry and flow of the base and how well it blends as an artistic extension of the fish as well as the Anatomical correctness of the fish, its attitude, fin motion and body language. are the eyes looking at something? They’ll even make sure scales are accurate in size and number. Especially if it’s in the open division and being considered for a world title. Sometimes a tiny detail like growth rings on the scales can make a difference. Fish an average number of scales, example a regular large mouth bass may have 55-65 scales along the lateral line from head to tail. 6-8 rows above the lateral line and 12-17 rows below Nd they’ll look at and notice detail like that. They aren’t quite as critical in the novice and their expectations for detail increase in each of the 4 levels, youth, novice, intermediate and open. I’m sure decorative and decoy details are just as important in carving them for competition as they are for fish.
It appears to me that the small saltwater fish garner the most attention. Congrats on your entries. Also, it was nice to meet you in person..
The two tiny ones Bo Wessman did certainly did well. He had actually carved them for another competition he said they had a “Champaign bottle” category. The whole carving including the base had to be small enough to fit inside a champagne bottle. Who is this? I can’t tell by your username 😜
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
You opened up a whole new world for me with these bases. Thank you!
You’re welcome, glad it helped. These are basic simple habit bases, if you ever do any carvings for competition sometimes judges usually expect something a little more ornate and graceful.
Yes
I hope ur getting health
U doing ok I hope
