Hey Danny I am so happy that a guy with your talent to carve fish replicas is producing this kind of content, for years since I was 16 I have searched for videos like this because I have always wanted to learn to carve fish. If you need some brown trout reference I have recently caught a few big beautiful browns from the world class Owyhee River. Just let me know 😁

Thanks! I’ve only been carving a little over 3 years and i watched every video I could find on power carving I also thought it didn’t seem like there was much out there specifically on power carving fish. I started this channel more to document my growth but it has turned into me sharing my growth as a power carver mistakes and all.
I would love to have more brown trout reference photos. You can never have too many!
You can email them to me at:

      I really appreciate it!

Wow! That is impressive! Just a heads up, the scales on a brook trout are tiny. I know you do tiny, but just a consideration when you are looking at the size of your fish. I’m getting ready to do a Dolly Varden which is also a char, and am facing the same issue.

Yeah I probably will not burn scales on a miniature. I’ll probably make it a smoothie and just simulate scales with paint or mica powder by scale tipping. I may experiment with an imprinting a scale effect by rolling them on if I can find something with a small enough texture.
The 17 in rainbow I just finished was pushing the limit on how small I could do scales. I made a 2mm tip and that may have been a half mm too big. I think the brown will be 20 inches so that my scale tips will be more proportional.

I have a 2mm tip and I think it’s too big for the char but I’m going to try it anyway because I’m stubborn and don’t want to use a different method. You got Ed Walicki’s video on scaling methods didn’t you? I know you learned how to make tips from him.

@danreed2189 yeah I have his scales video AND his fins video. But yes I learned how to make the scale tips from his video. I mention that on the video I made when I first started making them. I’m going to attempt a 1 mm and a 1.5 mm when I get ready to do scales on the brown trout carving

The reason I mentioned that video is because he demonstrated some alternatives to to burning for a really, finely scaled fish. Might be an option for you.

@@danreed2189 yeah I remember those techniques. In The online class I took with Josh Guge on the rainbow he used knurled tool handles to imprint the scales. The only reason i didn’t do that was because his class project was only 12 inches long. I followed the classes but I made mine 17 inches. So I decided to burn them on vs rolling them on with the knurled tools. I may do that on one of the minis I have planned.

Very nice, sir! How is the base for your bluegill coming?

    • @Danny_Harris-Arts
      @Danny_Harris-Arts  11 місяців тому

I scrapped the first attempt I accidentally broke part of the bottom of the base and didn’t really like how it was turning out.
The last two weeks We’ve been in a deep freeze here with lows in single digits and highs only in the high 20s/low 30s and was covered with about 3 inches of ice and snow. It’s warmed up somewhat and the snow has melted but it’s been raining for the last 3 days😝
As you may know I have to do my carving out on my front deck because I don’t have a proper indoor workshop. I’ve got an old enclosed pole barn but it’s too drafty to keep heated.
So I haven’t gotten to work on it like I wanted.
Weather is going to have to clear up a little before I can start on it again.
I’ve got to do one for a previous crappie and a catfish project also so as soon as the weather clears up I’m going to carve all the rocks and limb components in one sitting and kinda work on 3 bases at once😳

Yeah, the weather has got the whole country pretty darn cold. How many fish are you going to enter in the World’s this year?

@@danreed2189 I shooting for at least 5-6, got two done now. The rainbow and the Bluegill. Going to start a brown next, then I hope to do a white crappie and possibly another largemouth. I’m also planning to do a couple miniatures, Probably a brook trout and haven’t decided on the 2nd one yet maybe a mini pumpkin seed. I also am kicking around doing a 40 inch flathead or alligator gar.

    It’s an option.

Yeah I may try it on a blank and see how I like it. I’ve actually have several gun cleaning rods with various sized knurled handles that may work perfectly.
