Improving prehospital pediatric care: Arlette's story
On a stormy night in Iowa, 2-year-old Arlette’s mild respiratory illness became a life-threatening situation. Fortunately, two local EMS agencies had prepared to ensure they had the right protocols, equipment, knowledge, and champions in place to be “pediatric ready.”
The National Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project empowers EMS and fire-rescue agencies to improve their “pediatric readiness” or capability to care for acutely ill and injured children. A federally funded initiative of the Emergency Medical Services for Children Program -- in collaboration with 30 national organizations, federal partners, and experts -- the project provides EMS and fire-rescue agencies with free tools and resources for improvement, including an assessment opportunity open now through July.

Approximately how often would a model require replacing? Additionally, could glycerin be used instead of water for longevity? Thank you this is a great video!

Thanks for the question. We have found that given a moderately clean prep and refrigeration the models can last at least a few weeks if not a month. If done with less attention you may have mold growing after a few days. We have not tested glycerin and hope that you’ll let us know if it is a better option for longevity without the loss of likeness to human flesh. Feel free to send updates or additional questions to Anna.K.Sessa@hitchcock.org for a speedier response. Thanks for watching!
