Kitesurfing basics - How to jump
After teaching a decade of this sport, the swing theory concept started to form in my head, and I applied it in my teaching when teaching students for kitesurfing jumps, it was working better than anything. Here it is. I am sharing my tips with you; that is how I teach kitesurfing jumps in my lessons, and all my folks do this in the epic gust kitecoaching schools.
I taught this with the most significant success for those who never jumped. Many riders build the wrong muscle memory for a very long time, so they struggle to switch this around, but when someone had a clean slate, they picked it up quickly, and we went from no jumps to 2-3 m jumps within a week of deliberate practice.
This is not a magic trick that you will watch and be able to do bigger jumps. The swing theory might be something you will remember - so I will reach my goal - I found this as a key element in the lessons. Eventually, the real deal and faster progression can be achieved when you take a coach, who will be able to pinpoint your strong and weak links, and you can put deliberate effort to practice exactly what you need.
Big thanks to Luke and Paul for helping me in the shots, to Ventum Kiteboarding and its owner, Sebastian, and the Lieuwe family. Without them i would not able to show this to you!

    I always love seeing the huge wake behind myself. (I also like seeing the water drip off the tips of the kite after relaunching it out of the water. But that’s usually just a sign that o messed up somehow and dropped the kite… but I love to see the stream of water out of the kite) 🤙

      @ i had a chance to try the backpak. Not even remotely close to this system unfortunately- the backpack is very wobbly. This one can be tighten well and stays stiffand still shakes a bit but offers the best result in such sport. When you see the thing itself it could be remade under 20 eur but inguess the idea anb being the only one allows them to charge.

      @ i think it is probably cos this is a special use case. That backpack thing is great walking around like hiking and get great footage - and itnhas all kind of storage inside so you can keep some stuff in it- cos of this the materials are not great for water either. I reckon running would be also a problem with it. They aim on a wide user range so compromise is normal at specificity. I dont know much about other products they release. I have a line mount for the 360 too- thats also a wake-kite specific thing- also great.

    Very interesting. But what is the kite position when you take off to maximize the swing effect? Just a bit before 12, right at 12 or a little after 12 ? And what is the kite movement during the jump ? Thanks a lot and keep going with your great work!!!!!

    • @EpicGust
      @EpicGust 2 дні тому

      it all depends. Internet is a good place for average answers but not to give exact answers - in my opinion. I can say x and it might hinder your progress cos if I had seen your jump, i would have say something completely different. I hope you get my point. To max your progress get a buddy or a proper coach who can give you a good overlook and set you on the right track. Otherwise it takes so much more time with trial and error. But i dont want to leave you without an answer - yet it might be not the one you need to hear - if you take off with the kite precisely at 12, your riding momentum will get the kite slightly behind you anyway. that is why i suggest NOT to send the kite straight behind. if you want to make a kiteloop it is better to take off slightly before 12. if it is a transition jump it is different agian. the kite movement is in the video i believe. kite goes to 12. stays there till the peak. kite moves back forward for landing - is this not clear from the video? cos then i need to refine it :) i am working on a way to evaluate this and give precise things to people through a video analysis, would you be interested in this? If you have a video of your own jumps i can evaluate it for you!

    Thank you for touching on small details that matters 🤗 If possible, could you maybe make one more video about another small detail - which is typically not highlighted enough ( I watched at least 50+ different kitesurfing tutorial videos and haven't seen enough attention to it ). You mentioned it briefly in this video, but I think the detail deserves its own video. I wasted nearly 8 hours in 3 consecutive days in water when I was trying to learn how to go upwind. (I had nice kite control + snowboarding / wakeboarding experience) And the mistake I was making - was to lean (sit) lower and push more on to the back feet way too early - so before I've got enough speed I was killing the power in kite and I was slowly stopping and sinking. And at some point I got tired from trying to learn going upwind and decided to simply have a bit of fun in last hours. So I went a bit downwind, which obviously gave me a bit more speed / power and then after 200 meters I decided to slow down. But this time instead of breaking I actually started to go upwind. 😁 And during all of those wasted 8 hours the only thing I was missing was a bit more speed to catch the balance between kite drag and resistance provided by the board. 🤦 Update: Actually found your upwind tutorial. You seem to touch it there. 😁 ua-cam.com/video/K6ftabVNfhs/v-deo.html

      Hey! I feel your pain - in fact my upwind video covers this i belive - have you seen it? If so , let me know! To be fair this is not your fault, those small things vary from person to person. yet if your instructor is a great guy, fun to hang with (like most of us) yet they dont have the ability to pinpoint these things you will wast money and time. The specifics to person to person are endless. I wish you good progress in the future. Some things just need the right coach to make it click.

    That is great content ! Could you continue with the timing of the jump : - when to send the kite and pop (at the same time, one before the other....) - when to pop : when the kite is at 12, a little bit before or after - when to pull the bar : when you leave the water or before - the position of the kite : right at 12 above your head or a little bit in front of you (in the wind windows). Thanks a lot and keep going with your great work!!!

      @@Baptiste_L all my questions in this comment. My takeoffs are okay, I was able to get sent to 7-8 meters with my 9 on the famous 30 kts winds of Maui (yes I felt overpowered lol) however I had to jump with a kicker wave, I think I need to carve upwind more. However when overpowered the kite pulls so much is hard so sit lower in the harness rly quickly

      @@gillesbkf4315 So you just explained the most common mistake. I jump around the same height on my 7 in 20 knots! Learning how to get that peak power with progressive edging and bar sheeting out, and creating that power instead just pulling the bar is key. a lot on my mind. more videos are coming!

    Kiting is far from a new sport. FlexiFoil has been making super high quality power kites to surf with since the 1970s.
