Bikepacking Ancient Northumberland

A (failed) visit to see some 7000 year old footprints inspired this year's History of Northumberland bikepacking trip - looking at all the visible (or not) stuff remaining from the period between the end of the Ice Age and the Roman invasion. Two great things about living on Tyneside: lots of gravel tracks and lots of public art. Much of the art is on those gravel tracks, so I put together a 100km route to show off my favourites and plenty more in passing! Strava file: www.strava.com/activities/10400067046

Did a fantastic 4 day bikepacking tour of the Cairngorms in Scotland, wild camping 3 nights. Tough going with beautiful scenery and largely benign weather - it's Scotland so there had to be one bad (half) day. Where can I ride my gravel bike?
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
This video is a rumination on the whys and wherefores of the rules in relation to rights of way for cyclists in England and Wales. It's much more complex than I thought - and sometimes downright contradictory. It is certainly not helped by some landowners feeling they can dictate to people exercising their right of way. Please note that this is my interpretation of the rules rather than a defin...
Northumberland Coalfields Gravel Ride

A wet New Year's Eve 70ish mile gravel ride out along the waggonways and farm tracks of SE Northumberland, taking in some industrial heritage from the days of coal including the biggest bucket I've ever seen. BTW: in the cold, I misspoke - one of the two Stobswood draglines, Big Geordie, was scrapped, the Ace of Spades was dismantled and shipped to the US where it operates under a new identity,...

N 1! What do I think of my new Sonder Camino gravel bike?
Great video thanks Gareth. I’m lucky enough to live just a couple of miles from Birdoswald Fort so these are regular roads and tracks for me. That area beyond Spadeadam is beautifully remote and, if you take the right forest track, you can ride through to Kielder Water.
Yeah typical i start looking at a new bike in this case a sonder camino and then all of a sudden every video and article is about the sonder camino ......i guess the universe is beating me around the head to go out n buy it 😆
Deserved them fish & chips after that, well done
I've done a similar trip with my son. We camped at Budle Farm (not farm from Budle bay site) and because we cycled there Eric the owner let us camp for free.
good effort,
7:30 "Hike a bike" The idea of the route is good, the overall 'scope' of the route is good but too many of the trails used are just the wrong ones - it's almost like Marcus Stitz (the routes creator) came up with a route map and didn't either ride it or ask others to ride it before publishing. FWIW most of the crap sections are easily avoided, with local knowledge. I live in the Borders and ride MTB, gravel & road.
@@br5380 there’s a video of him riding it, on a MTB in dry conditions. I was just slithering in the mud!
@@GriffKane Agree, you did 'pick' a bad few days (which is a shame as we've had a cracking October), but there are decent all-weather alternatives plus tarmac 'avoiders' which IMO he should've used in the first place.
I'm glad Markus made these routes, but he likes a hike-a-bike more than most. However, doing his routes has meant I've visited many more places in Scotland than I would have. Thanks.
Hi Gareth I've just stumbled across your channel and I'm working my way through your back catalogue, as a fellow resident of Tyneside your routes resonate with the routes that I've done. I thought I knew my way around but there have been a couple tracks I've not recognised particularly on your river Tyne ride. Great work !!
Great video Gareth! Very informative with great facts. We need to get up to Northumberland for a video after seeing this. New sub from us.
It's great to see you back out Gareth 🚲👍
Oh I’ve been out, but there’s more than a few a few half finished videos…
@GriffKane Well I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished articles then 👍
Thanks Gareth. Love your passion for your home turf of Northumberland. Great to see these sites and gives me some inspiration to look out our local sites. I live a bit further north in the Scottish Borders where there are a few similarities.
Nice one Gareth that was great bike ride stopping off at some good places in Northumberland I recognised most of the locations atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
What size frame is that ?
@@Temporalplace Large, although I went for a shorter stem as i felt a bit stretched!
I don't see why one should be concerned with the carbon used being to make an EV, I would assume that people buy them used, and buying selling used products; is the reuse part of (reduce reuse recycle). I mean if the concern is about manufacturing pollution, then using a small old gas-powered car is the most environmentally friendly option. I wonder how many miles an ebike needs to be driven warrant its manufacturing pollution? I am glad you enjoyed the biking though :)
Thank you
How’s the build quality been long-term? I got an Electra e-bike and I love it, but it doesn’t have nearly the capacity that some beefier bikes do and I’ve hit the max weight getting groceries already. Got a bit squirrelly. Was thinking about grabbing an Orox once I had the cash to do so.
@@toastybuns5281 it’s built like a tank. The only real problem I’ve had was letting the rear tyre go a bit soft and the hitting a pothole when loaded 👉 bent derailleur. Wouldn’t happen on an Orox…
great video mate... nice work
Well Done Gareth Loved the Video
Hey Gareth, great vid, nice to see how other bikepackers do it, always come away learning something. Subbing to keep up with your adventures 👍🚵♀️
V. Informative. Thank you, for such a great review.
Very apt & interesting video Gareth ! Apt because I brought a frame set to build one up but it w they all as only when it was delivered I realised it has a full carbon fork. I have a few bikes but whether they are steel , aluminium , CF have non CF stems so as I am building it myself with limited skills I returned it. I just don't like the fact that CF steering tube is so malleable. Its a shame because the bike always gets good reviews as yours does. I will look for an alternative but I will stick with 1x as I have been using my grandsons hybrid with it fitted and I just love the convenience. If I should struggle at any time being I am old I will just get off and walk. Glad your happy with it and you now have a new Sub.
That was an excellent video - a really good idea for putting an interesting route together!
Thanks!
thanks Gareth, Bikes, camping and some history, three things I love, great stuff
This is really interesting, something I've tried to dip my toe into but got utterly confused about. My biggest gripe always falls with farmers and their bully tactics where they take land over time and claim it as their own, or like you say they put no cycling signs on a path that so obviously is allowable for cyclists. Then there's public access land....dont get me started!
Hi Gareth just subbed your channel and running through your vids ...resident of Carlisle but came from weardale ..co durham.. cracking vids ironically I dropped into blanchland yesterday with my eldest daughter on our way home ...who liked the place...atb..👍
The Cheviots are amazing, I lived in Newcastle for 6 years. Getting out to Northumberland was amazing. I thought there was something more special about the Cheviots above the Lake District. There was a real sense of isolation.
Enjoyed that and a great idea for the ride. Thanks 👍
Great video. Do you have a Komoot file for the route?
I do, but I didn't follow it religiously - the strava route may be a better guide.
Love it. A few places i didnt recognise. Good going. There is a really long piece of art along askew road, but ladt time i was passed it was well overgrown.
Thanks Gareth, liked this one very much. Would like to do the C to C sometime myself, with some better weather and warmer temperatures. Looking out for the next one.👌👍💪🏻
Nice idea for a video Gareth and you seem to have a lot of trail art around your way 👍 Cycling is great way to see things for sure.
Great for sharing, near the spoon is the shroud and not too far from there is the killingworth hippos, though they are not perhaps on a true cycle route
I thought about the shroud, but it was a bit too far off route - daylight hours were limited!
The shroud officially is known as Capella, and you were about 5 mins away from Eat For England. It's recently all been resurfaced around there too so it's a lot easier to get to now. Great idea linking these all up, a ride I'll definitely do in the future, inspired again by your rides, thanks!
Fantastic video thanks for sharing. Some very familiar locations/pieces of art and some new ones too. Coming home on the train used to be indicated by the illuminated blue star at Newcastle breweries!
Hey, what Garmin is that? Looking at investing and if that can cope on the 300, then should be good enough
Edge 530 - although I did need to plug it into to my charge pack for the last few miles.
Very interesting, thank you. I've almost finished reading Graham Robb's book The Debatable Land, and am keen to do a similar bike tour of the area.
It's great book!
Looking at your other comments about the accompanying music, i would just like to add that it's a deal breaker for me. Also 6 advert rolls in a 25 min video is excessive. Please listen to your feedback as you have excellent content and personality to grow your channel.
Sorry Andy, I have no control over the adverts.
Very inspiring in some very grim weather - many thanks for sharing!
My home ground, back garden😉👊❤️❤️👌🇬🇧fantastic to see my haunts and that you enjoyed the ride, considering the rain😢Stay safe and sound mate 😊
Very good as usual! Do you have a GPX you can make available? Also what camera do you have - you mentioned a Go Pro but you seem to have different mounts, including a handlebar and chest mount is that right?
It’s all filmed on one Go Pro - I have handlebar, chest mounts and mini tripod. The GPX route taken on Strava isn’t always what I’d planned - had to cut a chunk out of Day 2 because the going was sooo slow!
Hey Gareth, I'm keen to get an idea of the tools/resources you use to plot these routes - they look like something I would not feel confident riding down 👍🏻
I use a mixture of OS maps, Komoot, Strava, Garmin Connect and published routes - the main loop in this one was taken from Ted Liddle’s excellent book www.amazon.co.uk/Cycle-Rides-Northumberland-Beyond-2/dp/1916237657/
Another great video - really enjoy seeing the countryside in Northumberland. As a local to Wallsend i know a bit if that route, but i wouldn't date go iff road like you do 😂 Loving the videos 💪🏻
Thank you!
Love the videos and really enjoy your mini history lessons. Fab stuff. As someone else said, being wet and knackered is standard Cheviots-ness 😊
1st video I've watched of you on your travels. I have walked the Cheviots for over 20 years and know how hard it is on wet days - pretty miserable. I think you're nuts to do it on a bike 😂 but shall be subscribing and watching more of your videos 👍🏻
I can’t disagree 🥜!
Better in the rain😂😂
Your video was recommended by youtube; good stuff, keep going!
Awesome, thank you!
It's good to see you back Gareth. The Cheviot Hills is where I started my backpacking 'career' as a teenage hillwalker, and so they have a special place in my heart. I still regularly walk and cycle up there, I enjoy the peace and quiet that can be found there. Great video and I always appreciate the accompanying history lesson 😀👍
Thanks! History lesson was a bit compromised by being wet and knackered!
@@GriffKane being wet and knackered seems to come with Cheviot territory!
Great video as usual Keep them coming
Thanks! If only I could take more time off...
Great video but the music was too loud and the wrong genre
Four different tunes in there - which one didn't you like?
Very first time i have seen regular bike size comparison. Which is important for someone new to long tail cargo bikes. Are 20" wheels good enough for 20km long rides?
We've done 50km rides on them, no probs.
Nice video showcasing the route but I’d personally drop the accompanying music, I listened with the audio off
I think it would be a bit dull without!
@@GriffKane good tunes bro... keep it up
Thanks for sharing buddy. Great video. We are taking this on in just over three weeks so it's good to get an idea of the terrain we will be facing.
Great informative video well put together. Its a pity that bridleways are not kept in good passable condition.
