Donnie Darko EXPLAINED
A video essay (with spoilers) about the dark deeper meaning of 'Donnie Darko' (2001), directed by Richard Kelly and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Seth Rogen and more. In this video I get into its deeper themes and symbolism. I look at Roberta Sparrow's book 'The Philosophy of Time Travel' and tangent universes, predestination, eschatology and Donnie as a Christ figure.

THE BATMAN's Hidden Religious Themes Will Shock You
Life must be real good in the 70s, if a part time magician can buy 2 houses
I had the directors cut on blu-ray, I watched it so many times. I love this film. I had never seen some of the things you show, thats amazing. Especially that impalment scene. I agree with the director, that may have been too far.
Second Peter, or Second Epistle of Peter, not Two Peter.
Its such an under rated movie
19:41 oh you mean Donal Trump..
Him too. Evil, like Jim Cunningham
Mr Reed must be a redditor
I think it would be cool if in the next film, they kill off Bloodworth, and while going through his effects they find his research into these types of incidents. Linking many well known disasters into deaths design, it would be a nice way to honor Tony Todd and breathe new life into the franchise.
"It imbues everyday life with a sense of cosmic significance" brought a tear to my eye 🥲
Very well-told, thorough, anology / symbolism analysis. Keep-up-the good work(s.)
This is the best explanation of this movie and more , thank you
More of a fun thought than a theory.. what if, like the jet engine, Donnie literally went back in time, and the past Donnie is still out sleeping on the golf course or wherever he was in the beginning..
An important detail that often gets overlooked is when they go to the movies. The sign has the movie The Last Temptation of Christ playing in the theatre. In that film Jesus gets off the cross and lives his life only to realize it was a trick by the Devil so that Jesus would not save the world through his sacrifice. However, as Jesus realizes his mistake he suddenly appears back on the cross and starts laughing because he was now given a second chance to make his sacrifice. Donnie has a similar revelation where he realizes that he must die to save everyone else and laughs in the face of death. I'm glad that someone else has made that connection!
If you read the film makers meaning of the film it’s utter nonsense 😂 whatever you thought it meant was better than their version
I think a big part of the movie is also the fact that Donnie is somewhat being shown the good and bad that he does after his death. He falls in Love l, he exposes a pedo along with a number of other good and bad things. He is however understanding that if he had lived the girl he loved has to die so there is the causation aspect to the theme of the movie as well.
There's not too many movies that can be described as hauntingly wonderful and poignant. It's almost a perfect film, the only mistake was changing the Echo and The Bunnymen song to the INXS song, didn't really make any sense thematically, everything else - every song, every frame, every edit, every word - zen. I grew up right in that time in a parochial school system just like that. Right on the money.
An ex showed me this movie... words do not describe
“finn’s arm is mint” is one if THE BEST call backs in cinema
And it STILL doesn't make sense!
Sparkle Motion lives on in all of us....
i dont think it is a depiction of the self-destructing nature of “evil”. evil does not exist, only the consequences of tragedy, trauma, lack of support & help exist. this movie shows that, what made arthur fleck the joker, is the same that made the “psychopath” at the end of the film who kills him. this is mirrored at the very beginning of the film with the animation. people are having mixed reactions to the film, for the same reasons people were having mixed reactions to arthur’s surrender, & admission, that the joker was simply a fantasy, an escape, for him, & now thousands of others in gotham, & now millions of people in the real world. people are uncomfortable with tragedy, & the recognition that arthur has when he admits to himself, & the audience, that his made up grandiose persona, was only a means for protection, & deflection from reality. for the real life audience, for lee, for joker fans in gotham & the real world, they are instinctively uncomfortable with this bc it is a confrontation of their own thoughts, feelings, fantasy, grandiosity & escapism. bc they share they these things with a character like the joker. people often mirror the joker & arthur fleck in their own life, have the same traumas, thoughts, & fantasies. so when arthur fleck has the recognition of what his joker is, & what his actions are, they are uncomfortable, & angry (hence why u see so many people saying they hate this film, & why lee leaves & “psychopath” kills him) bc they feel his change or realization is unjust, & ultimately feel as though that means their escapism, grandiosity & anger (all as a result from their own tragedy, trauma, lack of support, & help) are not justified. so no it is not about or bc of “evil”, i think u need a rewatch
just seen the movie, shi crazy
My take is that the movie is a metaphor for the last days, the control that is yet to come. Clues are in The Revelation. The scripture that is key to Heretic is Rev 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. Those that believe Jesus will accept death, those that disbelieve will be controlled. Both doors lead to the same basement room, but it is unknown how things would have played out if they had chosen the other door.
I think we DO know what corrupted the timeline and created the tangent universe. Paraphrased, I'm sure: "Donnie Darko? That sounds like a superhero." "What makes you think I'm not?" Donnie was being playfully sarcastic. But, he actually IS! Though, he is not CONSCIOUSLY aware of the fact. He can see into the future. It's the basis of the entire film. He subconsciously removed himself from the bed, before the plane engine crashed down onto him and killed him. THE ENTIRE FILM NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED. It was in his head. A dream perhaps. However, upon realizing what was happening, Donnie CHOSE to remain in bed, and allow himself to be killed, spraying those he loved from creating to exist, when the tangent universe collapsed. Donnie Darko WAS a superhero. It's also possible that Donnie has the ability to time travel. But, I really don't think this is the case. Donnie perhaps thought his visions were real, and that he was in the future. But I think THAT was the true delusion. Everything that happened was actually just a very intense and realistic vision, and never happened. They were what WOULD happen, if Donnie didn't die from the plane engine falling on him. He was SEEING the future/tangent universe, but not actually there.
I saw this movie a dozen or two times when it was new because my best friend thought it was amazing. Needless to say I feel the movie is a sloppy incoherent mess and not worth even a single more or less dozen watches.
Follow the white Rabbit.
A lot of parallels between the Jokers and The King of Comedy.
Maybe he was laughing because he realized he ended his own life
Great discussion. Thanks for posting!
I watched this the day after seeing "A Private War" the biopic about Marie Colvin; worth checking it out as a bit of background to the world of photojournalism.
Is southland tales a sequel???
i thought it was a good movie, that lady gaga should be a singer she has a nice voice
Thanks for this brilliant video essay Thomas, it answered so many questions I had about this amazing movie. New sub incoming!
Ah thank you very much!
"I'm Marvel Jesus!" - Donnie Darko
And the soundtrack slaps.
Ok here is what most people missed: Mr. Reed, is God. Rewatch the movie.
Yep...religion is control and power. Regardless of what else happens in the movie or the knots in which you twist yourself...this cannot be denied.
I appreciated this movie but ultimately it didn't address belief or faith as much as it addressed religion and religious organisations.
The Book of Mormon is true. Sister missionaries would not have entered the home and LDS don't believe in reincarnation.
Beautiful.
PLEASE do the second unfriended movie video! Your channel has made me rediscover old movie stuff I think of very much deeper now as an adult
I disagree on the dream thing, which I think was the original point. When you are dreaming, while you are there - everything makes perfect sense. It isn't until you wake and you reavaluate your dream in "this world" that it doesn't comport with how things are here, and you start dismissing the dream. Still, and again - while you are dreaming, what goes on there makes perfect sense .. there. You must leave that "place" before things start to not make sense. So yeah, it is thought provoking, but I don't agree that our waking world holds any more "chance" of being real. How would we possibly quantify that? It feels real here, well, the dreamworld feels real THERE.
why is music as loud as ur voice? Kinda hurts
Why do so many of these Donnie Darko meaning videos ignore those computer scrolling scenes found in the director's cut? Is it because this is evidence of a simulated universe story and while they have no problem seeing a causation story of made up characters, they don't want to contemplate the possibility of their own non-existence? Regardless, once you view the film through a simulated universe lens the pieces fall in to place. Imagine a simulated universe performing whatever purpose a simulated universe might have when an error occurs, let's say a jet engine falls from the sky without there being a plane for it to fall from. This would ruin the purpose of the simulation necessitating a reset (end of the "world") or going back to a restore point and using existing elements to justify the error (creating the tangent universe of the story). Donnie is selected because he was going to be killed from the engine and he won't have an ongoing effect once the universe gets back on track. He would be the only one to know what actually happened but he's not going to be plagued by recollections because he will be dead. Others would just have pieces of a dream. So the program (God?) restore points the simulation creating a tangent universe just before the engine crash, saving Donnie using an avatar bunny. The bunny wasn't the real Frank simulation program (the real Frank was living his simulated life dating Donnie's sister, making masks and drinking beers) and it was simply a program guide (angel?) providing information to manipulate Donnie along the path to save the simulation. The book about time travel was not real either. (What are the odds someone writes something so fantastical that would apply to their future neighbour? It's absurd!) The book was another guide manifestation to manipulate Donnie into saving the universe. The power to see one's path ahead also is used to guide him to necessary actions or story elements ,like the gun, was granted to him. Donnie is also given other powers, ie strength to sink an axe in to a bronze statue and ultimately some sort of telekinesis to pull an engine off a plane, all of which is done off screen but obviously performed. The program (God?) manipulates Donnie throughout, nudging him along, even setting up a love interest to get Donnie to sacrifice himself for, if saving the universe itself wasn't enough. The Donnie simulation wasn't made a puppet like the other characters must have been. Donnie, though manipulated, was allowed agency so as to keep the saved simulation valid otherwise the program (God?) could just magic it all but then why have a simulation at all? This film which could appear to be about an imaginary bunny getting someone to self delete in a crazy way was quite deep and very well done. One of my favourite films.
In my Top 5. A soundtrack can help make a movie even better
The sex scene was the worst part of this film, totally not needed and uncomfortable to watch, especially when with family members. It isn't clear that a serial killer is on the loose in Venice, I don't remember that being mentioned in the film, which made his death confusing and random. Also Jesus and the bible would not approve of listening to warning from the dead, so not sure what the father in this film was meant to do in order to save his life from the dwarf. Unusual movie, I think its overrated, but worth a watch
I've watched multiple videos about this movie and you are the only to discuss the first appearance of the butterfly in Reed's house. Two things I haven't heard discussed anywhere: (1) didn't Paxton encounter Satanic iconography just before entering the cage room? And (2) did fire really interact differently with the two girls, as Reed claimed?
what a great read! loved this movie since i was a kid, always love hearing people talking about it!
its a film about purgatory..... he has this killer night to sort in his mind before he can finaly "go up stairs".... he sorts it... alls well in the end.... and so BANG... dead and on his way up/down.... thats what i see in the movie anyway
I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I work with Donnie Darkos every day (well, the 3 days per week that I work.) A few of them have such intricate convoluted grandiose delusions, that they could easily be the basis for this kind of movie. To me, Donny is a bright young man in the early stages of a descent into psychopathy. And we are witnessing the film from Donnie's increasingly psychotic point of view.
