1911 magazines: Who makes the best?
Переглядів 36 тис.2 роки тому
What are the best magazines? Who makes the best magazines? This question is almost as answerable as what is the best caliber? Needless to say I will state my opinion, and that is to stay away from any cheap magazines that are in consistently built or rather unbranded. Makers like Wilson Combat Chip McCormick and Tripp Research, Are universally excepted as some of the best 1911 magazines on...

ed brown or wilson combat mag for reliability? I know wilson uses the higher magazine design to assist the feed ramp but idk if ed brown also does that.

@@GatCat function over form. Just an observation
I find it odd that most of the 1911 manufacturers that can sell in California are mostly all the expensive brands. Suggest that maybe it’s more about money than anything else.
@@rhsking05 it’s solely about business. Companies go through the hoops to sell in CA if they see a profit. Companies like Rock island sell cheaper 1911’s but have the capital to start the expensive process. Perhaps tisas does not? Colt decided not to on the other hand. It’s a mixed bag. The blame is on CA for this.
Nice video! This is probably the 1911 I'd carry. And that's a hard thing for me to say being a lifelong revolver carry guy. Packing a Charter Arms Pitbull in .45 ACP as I type this. Lol. Love this gun and great video.
@@johnrus7661 thank you! I would like to get a revolver.
@@GatCat They are fun to shoot and own even if you do not carry it necessarily. But being able to shoot a wide variety of firearms to the level needed to defend yourself definitely helps you become a more broad and accomplished shooter. And you can see the pro's and cons of the different platforms. Which helps give a more balanced view especially as a reviewer.
Just put a tisas 1911A1 us army model on layaway and they told me it comes with 3 Wilson combat mags
Wilson
Your video still helps even 3 years later! Thank you

Colt.. Chip McCormick, Brownells, Wilson Combat, 🥃😎👌
Metalform magazines work well for me and aren’t too expensive. But, I also like Wilson and Tripp
I like Kirkpatrick holsters. But I LOVE TUCKER GUNLEATHER. GTucker makes holsters that are good looking, durable, and with amazing designs that hold the pistol securely while allowing a fast full grip and draw.
A quality, properly fit 1911 will be uber reliable with WC mags. A low quality, poorly fit 1911 won't work well with any mags. You can mess with valuation factors with a range toy. For a defensive pistol, bite the bullet and buy the best.
8:45 Those two Springfield mags look like they were made by Check-Mate. Both followers have a "skirt" in the front, that's a Check-Mate trademark. I believe they call these "bullnose" followers :) BTW, from what I heard, Ed Brown mags also are made by Check-Mate. Check-Mate makes factory OEM mags for a lot of 1911 makers, same as the Metalform. My Colt Series 80 Gov't came with two Check-Mate 7rd mags :)
@@harrycallahan9733 it’s quite possible. I imagine they have had contracts with various mag manufacturers over the years. Thanks for the info on these ones.
Ive never seen one in person.
@@johnfontenot7861 it’s not much different looking, but how it all fits together is nice. If you’ve ever handled an Ed Brown or Wilson Combat. It’s kind of like that. Just not a complete custom like those 1911’s.
Those sights are so high they look dumb, don’t allow for a proper cheek weld, and are bound to snag on things...
@@D5quared91 proper cheek weld, have you used these sights with this gun? If so, are you familiar with the 1/3rd co-witness or the inclusion of a raised cheek weld?
I think that if your gonna shoot just ball, then actual gi spec mags are the absolute best, except the only company that is producing a gi spec magazine is checkmate, as far as I know.
@@Dan-x4o3m cartridges are typically what interacts with the feed lips. The ramp of course making contact with the round. It all plays a part.
Agreed. The feed lips were designed around ball ammo.

Wilson elite 10 rounds-black or stainless, we all know the best thing is the same brand as the gun but if you want to improve Wilson 100%, im a small timer colt 1911 collector and some of the older ones it's nesesary to replace the spring and the original magazines, springs Wolff is top magazines Wilson
My PT1911 gov comes with a mec-gar mag and it occasionally has a feed jam. After getting the 47d Wilson combat magazine it doesn’t jam.
i understand purists wanting to gatekeep the 1911 and saying it 'has' to be 45 ACP as things i collect i believe in purism, too. were i a collector/purist i would tear the 9mm fans up, lol. my first gun will be a SA 1911 garrison 9mm, though, and i don't feel a bit bad about it any more than new corvette owners feel bad about their cars... which i don't consider real vettes, lol.
Honestly at this moment in time I would recommend your first 1911 to be the Springfield Prodigy. 9mm obviously. I have a 4.25” myself with a Holosun 507C. Regarding “purism” what is a 1911? Is it the original John Browning design of 1911? Or is it the 1911 A1, which saw the most military use? Can it have a beaver tail or long trigger? What about sights and grips? Can it be a series 80? The list goes on as every single component has been changed through the years. Personally, my deep appreciation for the handgun is what caused me to mention the sentiment regarding 45ACP. Considering all aspects and potential changes/upgrades to the 1911, 45ACP is simply rooted in its inception and pedigree. So why choose 1911 if not for the connection to the greatest American handgun of all time? Any “purist” touting the sacrilege of 45ACP most likely owns a MSH that is straight. Or upgraded sights or whatever else. So that, forgo the 45ACP and go nuts.
@@GatCat no doubt a purist would say the 1911 starts with the 1911, not the predecessors (which were 38, not 45 i believe) and maybe even claim it has to be a colt design. mostly they would probably say it has to be a 45 ACP. i get it, i say it's not a mustang if it has an electric motor. i'm sure they'd argue the A1 is a true 1911 because of that spirit and direct connection, perhaps even saying some of the changes were because of the military and not necessary improvements over a long history to remain relevant. i get gatekeeping and have no problem with it. if someone says it's not a 'real' 1911, i'm not going to argue with them because i fully understand the passion involved.
@@ryanbarker5217 well I was agreeing with you basically. Also, who cares what anyone thinks right?
@@GatCat oh, i wasn't really taking it as a debate, per se, just conversating. anyway, if i have the time tomorrow i'll run up to the gun shop near me that has the garrison i want. i appreciate the advice on the prodigy, but after all the research and having held the garrison, i have to pull the trigger on a purchase eventually. if they have a prodigy i'll definitely check it out, hold some more handguns while there just to be sure while hoping they don't mention the words 'glock 19' to me. not sure what the paperwork entails exactly, i think the waiting period is 3 or 4 work days.
@@ryanbarker5217 the garrison is a great value I think. I know that some of springfields newer 1911’s used plastic triggers and a lot of MIM parts. However, these differences will most likely not cause the gun to function any worse. If you have never fired a 1911 9mm you are in for a treat. It’s like shooting a BB gun. Very easy.
I bought this same pistol in late December of 2016. I love everything about it. The only thing I've changed on it since I bought it was the guide rod spring as I've fired a couple thousand rounds through it so far. I did replace the Pachmeyer grips with VZ grips the first year. But, I switched back to the rubber grips as they filled my hand better and just felt better. It is the favorite of my 1911's.
Wilson Combat. They also have great 1911 replacement parts. Slide stop, flat recoil springs, mag release and springs, etc. And don't forget those shock buffers for full size government models...
I agree.
I bought a 3 pack of Klonimus mags for $46, pretty decent mags for the price, no problems yet.
Weird that you own so many 1911 magazines and don't have any .45 ACP caliber snap caps. Not a criticism, but I just thing it's unusual to own a firearm and not have ANY dummy rounds for it.
That’s a very valid point. I have a G-Sight laser sight (dry fire training). After acquiring those, I never needed snap caps other than purpose of a video or to demonstrate to a new shooter. Hopefully I answered your question, certainly a valid one.
this is not even unpacking video :D but shown well enough :)
I never understood “unpacking” videos. Are people interested in the packaging being opened? The warranty card? Seriously, I have no idea why there is interest in anything other than the product itself.
@@GatCat i dont know either. I just found it funny, that you show the product without unpacking it, like its less than those unpack videos :D Usually iam interested in seeing the product itself :)
I actually watched this video after i already bought a Commander Classic and I'm just glad im not the only one that likes this particular firearm. I find it extremely accurate for a 45 ACP and very fun and safe to shoot. My mom wants one because of the safety mechanisms and because its metal and wood instead of plastic and rubber

Thanks! Ya sometimes I look at high prices of guns and opt for the base option. Then after all the after market parts it comes out more than the pricier one I initially passed on.
Thanks for reaching out on the response a couple months ago. I have a question about the rest of the 1911 CA complaint. Is springfield the only ones that have that key lock on the mainspring?
Ridiculous, F’ing communist state!
I have the idiot scratch too. I really don’t care about it. I just sand it down with some sandpaper and polish. It goes l away real quick.
Hey brother, this is a very interesting video. Would you show us how you go about making that cut?
