The videos uploaded here are a mix of all things small urban garden related. With limited growing space, we look to maximize what we can do in the space we've got. We love edible gardening, plant propagation and flowers too.
Propagating Sugarcane - Water Vs Soil Vs Potting Mix
How to propagate sugar cane
Sugarcane can be propagated in multiple ways. It can be directly sown as cuttings or canes, potted into potting mix or placed in water. It can also be cut to varying lengths from 1 node (growth point) to 3 or 4 nodes long.
Canes or cuttings of varying lengths will all shoot on the proviso they do not dry out. Water cuttings require little work but result in the smallest shoots when compared to cuttings grown for comparable amounts of time. Soil grown cuttings or those in potting mix both produce vigorous roots and shoots as they are drawing nutrients from their surrounds earlier on due to the speed they develop roots. Single node cuttings are more susceptible to failure as a single damaged shoot may result in plants with all roots and no shoots. The ideal length is seen to be be 3 nodes but if you are happy to have smaller sets of sugar cane in the first few years, using less nodes per cutting will reduce the need to propagate later on and allow you to plant in a range of areas.
Researchers in China conducted a study over a 2 year period and found that the optimal depth for sowing sugar cane is 5cm deep. This promotes root growth and cane growth in excess of 28% more than both 0cm and 10cm sowing depths.
Cane knives and long handle sharp pruners are ideal for cutting cane. Note that when using bypass pruners it is essential that the sharp side remains on the edge of the cane you want to keep. Damaged or crushed cane stalks increases surface for infection as for all cuttings.

Very cool! I was wondering if it was possible to do this, and was going to experiment with it. Your video confirmed my suspicions that this is totally possible! Thank you for posting!
I wonder whether using the top part of the plastic bottle would help keeping the water clean. The bottle cap would hold the water but allow for draining from time to time.
thanks for the video just started growing cane and it is taking off slow in the ground will try potty mix next time
Wonderful! I can’t wait to try this!
I regrow my cabbage from leaf cutting also. All plants wants to regrow. Give them what is needed and they will grow.
is there such a thing as green onions that can multiply from a single onion by bunching or is it fake? example as shown in this video ua-cam.com/video/aTkxx0BZsjs/v-deo.html
Didn't check the vid but bunching onions are definitely a thing.
🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
I will try ,after a lot of effort I got this small cutting
all my cuttings keep dying, what am i doing wrong. i tried very dry soil, very damp. in shade , with a dome for humidity etc....
Native pollinators are way better at pollinating
did you use special soil?
Insightful. Thanks for sharing.
greetings from New Zealand. nice video. just to clarify, rooting the cuttings will never achieve strong root ball and the root system will be prone do dying. so would not be better to grow a plant from seed as the rootstock. and then grafting onto that rootstock?
Two whole cups! 🍏
Hey I’m using the paper towel method for this. Do w it okay to keep outodoors. Read somewhere to keep them in light. Or somewhere warm

Can’t say I haven’t wanted to do random guérilla gardening … I’d be a bit concerned about dogs peeing on things 😂.

I accidentally cut one of my main vines instead of a dead branch off 😭 I'm trying the water rooting technique and crossing all my fingers and toes that it takes.... the very end of the vine hadls 4 or 5 flowers growing in it so I'm so sad that I cut it off
Do u put powet cutting powder in the water also?

Hi expert ....I am from Singapore. My passion fruit plant has 100 over flowers everyday & there are bees and ants besides my manual pollination.Unfortunately the male flowers/anthers have no pollen grains, I took a few to dissect. My passion plant was grown from stem cutting. It was grown in pot for 1 year before I planted on ground in January 22 2023 and in June all flowers start to bloom, I have given enough potassium from burried fish heads/bodies and used coffee powder.Your advice please
On my citrus if I have low running branches I cut the cup and airlayer/marcott them in place, either trifoliate or the fruit of tree.
Holy $#%@ did you process the 45kg? That would have been a mammoth effort!
Not my trees these ones, I just used the beans (with permission of course). Mine are not quite as prolific and I have significantly less of them. Those numbers were quoted over the total time that the trees had been bearing from memory.
Enjoyed the video!
Thanks 👍
