  • Processing coffee beans at home is super easy. To start the process all you need to do is remove the skins from the coffee cherries/berries. This can be done with a bowl and the end of a rolling pin or a mortar and pestle. Apply force to the berries and the skin will come away from the bean. Pick out the skins and you are ready to start fermenting your beans.
Fermentation requires you to place your beans in water and let them sit for up to 48 hours. Rinse when done and wash them off to remove any left over residue from the beans. Place them on some paper towel, pat dry and let them sit to dry out for a week or so. The beans will shrink due to water loss have thin papery husks on the outside.
Rub the beans forcefully in your hands over a bowl to remove husks. Blow lightly over the beans (outside) to remove the husks ready to roast. Before you roast remove broken beans or misshapen beans as they will potentially roast faster and burn.
To roast put your oven on moderate to a high temp. Use a perforated pie dish or aluminum tray, spread the beans evenly over it and place in the oven. Check them intermittently over the next 20 minutes, stirring as you go. After 20 minutes they should be done. Let them cool, refrigerate to store or grind them when ready to brew.

Not my trees these ones, I just used the beans (with permission of course). Mine are not quite as prolific and I have significantly less of them. Those numbers were quoted over the total time that the trees had been bearing from memory.
