A Brief History of Mankinholes. Todmorden
Up on the hills above Todmorden sits Mankinholes. A beautiful hamlet of houses, steeped in history, and seen from Stoodley Pike and Gaddings Dam.
Using old OS maps, (and older) Tom looks into where the original village may have once been, the location of the cross on Cross Lane, who owned the land, and much more....

Lost in the Fog on a Reservoir Walk. Blackstone Edge. Littleborough
Переглядів 6537 годин тому
The reservoir walk takes in around 7 reservoirs high on the hills above Todmorden. Most famous of these is likely Gaddings Dam. The "highest beach in the UK" and stretches beyond to Cragg Vale and Blackstone Edge. Today we walked to 4 of the reservoirs....but, there's an issue......and as you will see, you'll just have to take our word for it that we are at them! Join us as we get lost in the f...
The Memorial to the Manchester Martyrs. Moston. Manchester.
Переглядів 1,7 тис.12 годин тому
In the grounds of St Josephs Roman Catholic Cemetery in Miston, Manchester stands a memorial commemorating a historic event in Manchester's history. In 1867, 3 men from the Irish Republic were part of a gang that rescued 2 of their own people from a police van but saw a sergeant killed. Despite never firing a gun, the three men were found guilty and sentenced to death. The three of them became ...

Once known by the name Fyrin ho' kloof, the Ancient woodland stretching from Moston to Blackley in Manchester is today known as Boggart Hole Clough. An area steeped in history, and a woodland since the Bronze Age, it is also said to be the home of a malevolent sprite known as a Boggart. Over the last 3 centuries, there have been many reports of children going missing and never being seen again....
A Snowy Hike to Churn Milk Joan. Ancient Standing Stone. Wadsworth Moor. Hebden Bridge

After the recent heavy snowfall we cannot quite head much further afield than the back door. So, today, a familiar location, though not filmed it in snowdrifts before! Churn Milk Joan is an ancient standing stone on the boundary of Wadsworth and Midgley Moor. It is steeped in mystery and folklore and even a subject of a poem by Ted Hughes. Join me from the comfort of a cosy chair as I hike acro...

A Visit to the Royal Armouries Museum. Leeds. (Highlights)
Переглядів 532День тому
Happy New Year everyone. Our first trip out in 2025 takes us to Leeds to visit The Royal Armouries Museum. As you will see though, it was very nearly impossible to film anything at all ....on site work meant constant drilling, it was packed with people, and the cabinets are all very reflective when trying to film.... So instead, consider this a 'taster' to tempt you to visit this free museum. H...
Exploring Brimham Rocks. Harrogate. North Yorkshire.
Переглядів 86414 днів тому
Brimham Rocks are a vast outcrop of millstone grit rocks near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Not dissimilar to the Bridestones, these rocks are millions of years old, eroded by the weather and nature into an alien landscape. Once thought to have been carved by druids, the rocks have been given various names over the years including the dancing bear, lovers leap, sphinx, serpents head and many mo...
The Secret of the Druid's Temple. Ripon. North Yorkshire
Переглядів 1,9 тис.14 днів тому
In the woods near Ripon, North Yorkshire, is a large stonehenge looking 'temple'. Although you'd likely think it to be thousands of years old, the secret of this temple is that it is actually only 200 years old and is a 'folly', designed for nothing more than decorative purposes. The Druids Temple was built around 1800 at the request of the wealthy William Danby. He hired a number of local unem...
The Tragedy of Rodwell End Farm. Todmorden
Переглядів 88 тис.14 днів тому
After previously filming this abandoned farm for the channel, I received comments from people who had recollections of a possible historic murder taking place at the farm. Tom and I began to research but found no trace of such an incident being recorded. However, what we did find was a series of tragic suicides linked to the barn next to the farm. On at least 4 occasions, somebody has taken the...

The Haunting of Scout Hall. The Calendar House. Shibden Valley. Halifax. A Ghost Story for Christmas

In the picturesque Shibden Valley above Halifax stands the centuries old Scout Hall. Built in 1681 by self confessed 'scoundrel' John Mitchell....a gambler, drunkard, hunter and horse racer. Notorious locally, Scout Hall became a den of wild parties where even a vicar wished his host a speedy end! This came before Mitchell reached 40.....as he wished to find a way to soar over the Valley like a...
Tom Foy : The First Yorkshire Comedian. Sowerby Bridge.

Tom Foy was born in Manchester in 1866. As a young man, he moved to Halifax to work. In his spare time he would head to Shroggs Park and practise acrobatic skills in the trees, wanting to follow his dream of possibly joining a circus. He eventually did, but after writing and performing his own sketches, he later became a nationally known and famous music hall star. In the early 20th Century, To...

Is the village mentioned in The Doomsday Book ?
Excellent videos lads. This was so informative and a pleasure to watch something I knew nothing about. Keep the videos coming and Tom… please set up and UA-cam channel! Your a natural 👍🏼⭐️
Savile was a regular site where I grew up in Crowthorne in Berkshire which is where Broadmoor top security hospital is, and Savile was involved in a lot of charity work for Broadmoor. I remember my dad telling me he'd seen Savile in his Rolls Royce one evening cruising around the housing estate, sends a shiver up the spine wondering what was he up to. We also used to see him out jogging.
Well done lads for bringing us with you to the Mankinholes Village, and giving us a synopses of the history of the area, which I found fascinating, more of the same Tom! We live in a fascinating country steeped in our very own history.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Thank you for this very interesting video. A destination for us to discover on our next trip north.
You'll love it 😊. Thanks
You should have gone to the bridge on Hyde Road where there is a blue plaque on the bridge commemorating the event.
OK. I didn't know that was there. Thanks 😊
The Ocean Chemical Works were still in existence in 1945. In October 1935 the management applied to Ramsbottom Council for building an extension to the works. Mr. Kolkin of Prospect House, Ramsbottom, was the manager of the Ocean Chemical Works. In 1983, the land passed to the local authority, who turned it into a nature reserve
Thanks for the info 👍
I've only just discovered this channel, but really enjoyed this video, and Tom has such a wealth of knowledge. How did he get to know so much about this area, and history in general? I'd love to have a better knowledge of history, but it seems to go in one ear and out of the other.
Thanks, glad you found us. He did a lot of research for this one ....but, yes, I'm more the same as you. I always write lots of notes 😊
I guess I’ve seen too many “folk horror” movies. I’m always expecting werewolves or witches or something in these quaint, remote looking locations. 😅
Yeah, i get you 😅
Great video Matt and well done Tom excellent research and views of the countryside.. Looking forward to the next vids ✌️✌️
Cheers. 😊
New subscriber and I’m really enjoying listening to all the uploads of your travels. So interesting and you clearly put the time in behind the scenes to carry out your research. Thank you! Your uploads are certainly giving me an appetite to get out more into nature this year and see/experience some of these wonderful places for myself. Look forward to the next one. Thanks Guys😁👍🫶🏻
Thanks so much. Hope you find lots on the channel to enjoy 😊
Spent my childhood/youth in Lumbutts/Mankinholes, so this was very familiar territory! Nice to see the Shepherds Rest (where I worked behind the bar), Lumbutts Church (Sunday School for many years) and Mankinholes Chapel, which was still a working church when I lived there - the minister held a weekly youth club, where I had my first snog (not with the minister!). I also remember going on the mill lake in a rowing boat; the house and mill were owned by the Greenwood family at the time; hugely common surname in the area and I suspect it still is. The youth hostel was still in operation at that time and I remember a party of German schoolchildren on an exchange trip with Tod Grammar School staying there. I recall they all hated baked beans! I took part in the return visit to Germany to a very attractive town in the beautiful Eifel region - goodness knows what they thought of Tod in those rather grim days. Good to see it's still as windy as ever up there. Yet another great video - keep up the valuable work.
Thanks for sharing your story with us 😊....and glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Hi Matt. I've only just discovered your channel but have been enjoying what i've seen so far. I'm wondering if you may be able to help me with a little bit of information, how well do you know Littleborough ?. About 35/40 years ago in my job as a truck driver i used to deliver to a factory in Shore Road Littleborough, i remember parking over night in the staff car park and walking to the pub at the far end of the road for something to eat, but i cannot for the life of me remember the name of the company or what they made and its been bugging me for ages. I've looked on google maps but it looks like the factory is long gone now. Hope you don't mind my asking, it was just a thought as you seem to have good knowledge of this part of the world. Keep up the great work, i look forward to the next video. Cheers.
Sadly my Dad is no longer around as he'd know in a heartbeat, as he was a wagon driver for Colletts in Halifax. I'll have a look on a map and see if it triggers any memories for me. Hope that's OK? Thanks for watching 😊
@@matparks08 Ok Thanks for replying. Is that the same Colletts that do the Heavy Haulage ?.
@John-L-1961 that's them 😊
Another informative video. I'm local to the area so found it of real interest. 👍
Great stuff. Thanks 😊
I live about 30 secs from this place moston blackley side and walking down lewis avenue on a night the dog crosses the road and wont walk on the fence side.... to be fair tho I dont know anyone that will go in there on a night you can feel some wierd energy even all the way from the road... walk through the estate a bit to the gate at the top of the 99 steps and just nope!! 😅 its really eerie!
Part of the research I did on the boggart tales said digs ate really not happy when they go through the park, so that's an interesting comment. Thanks for watching 😊
In the 70s, my family used to live in one wing of Green Hayes, on Savile Park Road (now a funeral home). Jocelyn Horner, the sculptor, lived in the other wing. The Horners had been brought up at Green Hayes, which was owned by her father, Charles Horner, the jeweller. Brothers Tony and Charles Horner were frequent visitors, and often had tales to tell, of the house itself (it was benevolently haunted), and their childhood there. They had all known Christie as children. They saw him as an oddball. Apparently, Christie always wore plimsolls, which were not commonly worn at that time, and would creep up silently on groups of other children, and just stand quietly watching. He was not well liked, always an outsider.
Thanks for that. Yeah, the general concensus seems to be that he was very odd as a child. Thanks for watching
Loved your Jacket Matt! Hope its from the film. Thank you very enjoyable. Great comments too
It is indeed....the 1994 Crow with Brandon Lee. Not watched the new one yet....but I love the actor in it. (Played Pennywise in IT). Thanks for watching 😊
Yes guys!! Loved this so much. Tom thank you for getting into the maps and pulling out the history. Top work. I grew up round the area and have been enjoying your videos. Stuff I've always wondered about. Brilliant, thank you
Thanks so much 😊
Very interesting!😊
Thanks 😊
Its not as scary as hes making out
🤫😉😊
On Tod Pasta and Present, I recently learnt that there was a school up there.
Pasta and present ?. Love that site 😊. I think there were 4 altogether in Lumbutts and Mankinholes....I'll double check. 🤔
@matparks08 I called it that once on the page and the guy temporarily banned me! I sneaked back in though.
There’s some nice pics of the Lumbutts one in Top Brink. There’s school house barn in Mankinholes and it moved more than that. There’s school house first one was in 1880s after the school at Oldroyd(112pupils 2teachers) lost its grant and had to shut. It apparently was in a barn and was supposed to be rebuilt. The landowner got a grant for it but never did the work. Lucky for him he pulled the Barn/School down and capitalised on an argument at Mankinholes Methodist Church using the land(and probably the stone) to build Oldroyd Chapel and two cottages at the back the same year his school shut. Also at Oldroyd and a few other places stood C of E Reading rooms(still standing as private houses at Oldroyd)
Thanks guys. I really enjoyed this one and Tom is an absolute font of local history. I'm really impressed you braved the chilly weather when I'm only leaving the log burner to get more logs!
Thanks a lot. Enjoy that log burner 😊

Great to see Tom upfront and well researched . Aged old Mankinholes. Lovely in summer, well done for braving the cold windy weather 😁 .
Yeah....he's far better at the in depth history videos than me 😊. It really was a cold one that day! Cheers
Loved seeking parts of mankinhole bank. Loved the stone brick houses and cottages. Interesting to hear that it meant little firece man. Lovely park of Yorkshire indeed thank you for the virtual tour
