I know there are so many similar options out there. I would say the Pit Barrel Cooker PBX, would be a another good option to consider at the price point. 22" grate for direct cooking and/or split grate, and 16 hooks.
very nice smoker you got there.👍👍👍
Very in depth :)

Workhorse better than Franklin
I have a major problem paying that kind of money for the XT knowing that masterbuilt is a throw away grill. They're horrible rust buckets. They need to step up and start using thicker better steel so people don't have to spend another $600 to buy LSS mods. Just my 2c.
Hmm, I thought maybe the XT would hold up a little better. Maybe not...
I have had the Lowes 1077 love it! Had it 5 years!
You guys and your fancy thermometers. I've been using my Thermoworks Smoke for the last 6 years and love it. I did get a tempspike and it is handy for rotisserie. I enjoyed the video. GJ
Good series. Have you tried running a big coal bed yet? Not all pits like it, but most I’ve cooked on including the solution, fatstack 80, and my 500 gallon love a large coal bed. Makes life so easy
This is quite unfair for RFX in "Upper Range Ambient Sensor" It's one of three wireless probe that can be used in frying oil and stated temperature of 1000f, yes its not the ambient sensor but all the rest of them refer to the wireless probes ability to handle high heat cooking. It can be used over 1000f open flame and get your internal temp perfect 👌
Hopefully people will see this comment
This is incredibly helpful. Thanks, Master D.
Smokeslinger!
To makw things easier I like to use a base of charcoal and add a half a split of wood for flavor/heat. Charcoal really helps with fire management
Why sell the bellfab for the BSS?
I can only store one offset and the bss was given to me. They're both good smokers. I would have had to do a little more work on the bellfab to get it to be what I wanted, so I went with the bss.
You guys are taking all the fun and love out of this community. Enjoy your smoker. Stop acting like you can build something better.
I'm certain I can't build one better, but I do think that contemplating the strengths and weaknesses of a smoker has value. If you don't want to watch or engage in that discussion, that is your right. Good luck!
Imagine searching UA-cam for bbq videos known to review Pitts and discuss strengths vs cons... And being upset you found what you searched for.
Smoke Master D, your video was incredibly helpful! Your expertise on the Lone Star Grillz El Patron is evident, and you explained the techniques - using coals on the fire brick, indirect and two-zone cooking, and searing - with such clarity. It's clear you're a gifted teacher, making complex grilling concepts accessible to everyone. Beyond your skill as an instructor, the video is also very well-produced. You have just about revolutionized grilling videos and tutorials and I hope someday you’ll remember me when you’re among the greats!
My reqteq 340 air box rusted out in 3 years not really an issue except they have no repair parts Buyer beware the hidden factors that limit the useful lifetime of these devices
Great video, but at those prices I think you can find a local welder to build a custom one.
You're probably right
Did you consider the Shirley fabrication grill similar to this one? I’m on the fence between the two.
Since Shirley doesn't have a website at the moment, could you give a link for the grill you mean?
@ ua-cam.com/video/FsnB8DGwmjU/v-deo.htmlsi=45nLsOyKjg3MGEVc. 10 min mark.
The solution pit you can fit a 5 gallon pail under to drain , water , grease etc , $744.95 cheaper the 3/8 steel aint worth that much extra. I bet at $2499 he aint making much profit if i could id buy the solution pit it looks like a bargin . For the record ive been welding 30 plus yrs and id make my own but im disabled now due to a motorcycle accident, but the price is great in my opinion. Also if you use a wood holder the difference in steel thickness wouldn't matter much , i doubt youd wear them out in your lifetime.
I ended up with the BigTex Metalworks Mini which is a 24x48 3/8 smoker. No scoop or anything. Traditional as can be. Thing is great!!
Take a shot everytime he says "ya know".
Very good detail. The one big thing you missed on the SnS grill is the thermometer placement on the lid. On the Weber it's located opposite the upper lid vent so if you're cooking you want to draw the smoke & heat across the food and out the vents but if the thermometer is on the opposite side then its right above the fire and you will always get too hot of a reading. With the SnS grill the temperature gauge is on the vent side so you will get a more accurate reading on the side where your meat is! A lot of people are doing 2 zone cooking and I can't believe Weber has missed the opportunity on this.
Great review information
In Argentina, every house that has a patio has a barbecue area built in the back and the grill is always built inside the building and has a system to raise and lower the grill like the Santa Maria. In the countryside, gauchos usually do the barbecue on the ground with a fixed grill, without Brassero or anything, directly on the ground and it is even very common for gauchos to cook whole cows on a cross nailed to the ground and with direct fire, not with embers like in common asados.
Thanks you for this clarification 🙂
The idea of splitting the pork butt for more bark is great. I'm going to do that next time!
I noticed my El Patron fire grate/diffuser doesn't lock in place or ratchet properly just like yours. I suspect the cables have been wound the wrong way inside. The handle should turn the other direction to properly lock. At least that's the way it is on my LSG Santa Maria Grill (which ratchets and locks the way it should). I am going to investigate this in the coming days and see if that's the case because it is not good the way it is. The way you have it now, turning the handle clockwise raises the grate and counter clockwise makes it go down. I think it should be the opposite.
Hmm...
@@SmokeMasterD After looking at the winding mechanism inside, it turns out you can crank the diffuser up by turning the handle either direction. If you do it one direction, the latch works, the other direction it doesn't. I was just cranking the wrong way. It looks like you did too. After releasing it all the way down, crank it up by turning the handle counter clockwise. That will make the handle want to release by turning clockwise, but will be stopped by the latching mechanism.
What it cost
It's about $2000 plus shipping without any upgrades.
Good job explaining this. Thanks man
you mistaken the EL REY SHELF SPACE FOR THE EL NINO , great video though
Might have to check out the cube more. I like the Gator Pit cookers.
Did you happen to get the rotisserie? I’ve wondered about just using the bar for meat hooks similar to what one would do in a pit barrel cooker
I didn't get the rotisserie, but it seems like something that could work
Lone Star can do rods for hanging meat and sausages from near the top of the smoker. Saw some in one of their Instagram videos
Weber Kettle also at ACE hardware
so you have the scoop, you still need the blocking wood ?
I use one but I'm not entirely sure.
In the initial ordering /design video you mentioned the water tray. Have you used it yet? You don’t mention in this video. Why do most people use blocking wood instead of a water trough, knowing the interior cook chamber is notorious dry? Also, in the initial order video you mentioned your preference for No Top Shelf. This too appears to be an easy place for water trough unless in your experience this would simply become too much of a heat sink and cause you to run through more wood attempting to sustain cook chamber +280. What are your thoughts or preferences on creating a more humid cook environment?
hey D, what is the price on this smoke king ?
I think it was $4,000
@ wow Bell fab prices sure have gotten me spoiled. Lol but I see the difference in the fit and finish and the look. Don’t get me wrong. The Bell fab is amazing, but I guess you have to pay if you want the grill to look like a work of art
other than features... fit and finish. does one smoker vs another affect the taste in your opinion ? i love the bellfab you recommended, craig was great to work with. ... but i was just wondering what your thoughts were. bell fab vs bluesmoke vs others you have. not asking you to rank them, but just wondering if you have seen taste differences as you have upgraded smokers.
While there may be an effect on taste, the main determinant is on the pitmaster knowing how to use his pit. If you learn your pit, that will affect the taste more than which pit you have.

Johnson Smokers are by far the best
I would love one but their just too expensive!
Thank you. I am happy with my pecos. I often cook chicken and other meats. Like the different zones. 😊
Original Grills pig cookers are manufactured by BQ grills
I did not know that. Cool 👍
Great review, you missed a few differences on the 600 that I think make a difference. #1 Ceramic interior coating (not on the 560, 545, 800 or 10150) #2 Magnetic switches ( from XT), Fire bricks in the hopper, vs cheap steel (560,800,1050 do not have). The 600 is closer to the XT in quality than the 800 is in my opinion.
This is a very well done video. Really appreciate it. I have a Grilla original, which is that unique shaped pellet cooker that they started with. The double wall assembly makes a difference in cold temperatures, certainly.
The Solution ripped off the baffle from @TheSmokinRedneck with no credit.
I think you should have included the Pitts and Spitts as it does have raisable grates. I would love to see a comparison of those less expensive cheaper grills as Expert, Char-Griller, etc as not everyone can spend thousands of $$$ and as long as you keep them clean and dry can last a long time and they do the same basic function and even have nice easy pull out ash trays that I find essential to keeping the grill clean. That is my main complaint against the M1 and El Patron. Thanks for your time making these videos.
Couldn't find much online either. I started a FB page for El Patron owners if anyone is interested to try and get a group of us helping eachother out. "Lone Star Grillz El Patron"
you might want to checkout gaucho Grills, far superior than these two
I covered them on a previous episode. They're definitely legit.
I have to say, you have really elevated the entire analysis and discussion of your BBQ pits/smokers. You were so good at comparing stats of cookers but your videos on the Big Phil Smoker and the El Patron are truly next level. The El Patron is wide enough to let you put the heat towards one side of the cooker and then to decide whether to go completely direct or partially or indirect on the food above. The size of the El Patron makes it a little challenging to get the heat and air flow right but you are figuring out how to do it. The fact that is can be used as an offset is a big plus for those of us who do not need the large offsets. I can see LSG benefiting from a few tweeks that could make this cooker better. But what you show is really postive. and Why this is more flexible than the original hot boxes a la chud style.
@SmokeMasterD beast of a cooker
