My current slate which is subject to change is Total Recall, Airplane! John Carpenter's Halloween, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Predator 2 and then either the Black Hole or Jaws 2. So, I promise it is coming up CC.

Film directors are under a ton of stress. Especially when they're committed to crafting exemplary work. Still, even though each individual component of a film can only contribute so much, it's often understandable if a director feels that too many of those cogs in the machine are breaking down, half-arsing it, or ineffective. 😕 A tough situation. But... as always... the only person who can make a Verhoeven film is Verhoeven. 💪😎✌️ That's why remaking TR & RC didn't work all that well.

Being a practical effects guy myself, I always used to watch these films with a "I wonder how they did that?" or "Oh, I see how you did that." interest beyond the actual story. Like you say, soon after this movie there was more of an interest in CG, which, beyond the novelty factor, became somewhat of a bore. When you can say "Oh that's just done in a computer." the lustre soon wears off. I'm glad that practical effects are making somewhat of a comeback, but I miss those days when we used to have to come up with a way to bring the creator's vision to the screen with bits of wood, rubber, string and clever camera work.

Although I'd heard about a few missies in pre-production, I had no idea just how much went on. Thank you for this amazing documentary. These personal stories have given a real human element to the people. Not to say that some of the stories you have touched on before haven't been important or engaging, but they have often been directly part of the movie-making process. I also love your editing, stills of the people involved, scenes, even the stack of drafts is a great visual cue. Alternative casting can sometimes make a massive shift in tone for a movie, turning it from an action movie to a thriller or even edging it towards more light-hearted tone involving comedy beats rather than one liners. I'm not sure if this was deliberate but in the stills with Ronnie Cox, the grey/green with vertical stripes matches the corrugated metal of the background.

As always, I appreciate your feedback, and we will continually work to not disappoint if possible. A lot of folks think Arnold is just a muscle-bound dude and there is a ton more to him than that and we wanted to kind of explore that one. Ironside had a lot of health issues, but we couldn't really explore that as it happened mostly after the production, and we try our best to keep our coverage during the time said films we cover so they are as immersive to that time as we can get. We pretty much focused on Sharon in our Basic Instinct coverage and as for Ticotin her interviews are all pretty much in lock step with the fun she had on the film and the appreciation she had for being in it. Whenever we do Robocop, and we will do that someday we are going to take a more personal look at Verhoeven as his journey as a director and his temperament on that film. Look forward to hearing from you again.

The colour is "off". What a weird thing to say. Would you say that to a painter that their colours were off? It's just weird. Also, were you saying that Seven was gimmicky visually? I'm baffled.

Different tastes are different tastes. Seven was not off as I said nothing of the kind like that in the video, but by 1997 everyone was using that method of color and yes, I would say it was tired and gimmicky by the time Alien Resurrection was released. The mood of the color was appropriate for Seven, Dark City and other such films as it matched those movies, but Alien Resurrection was following film styles of its own franchise and didn't need to copy modern film-making trends. It is what I thought then and it's still what I think now. It is in the end another person's perspective, so I hope I cleared up whatever bafflement you had on what I stated in the video. Thanks for commenting.

@@RepresentThis I never said you referred to Seven as off, but Alien Resurrection. It seemed like you were saying it was gimmicky and tired. Odd that it worked for you in Dark City, a movie that came out after this. I just think the whole argument is odd. I mean the first movie was shot anamorphic, the second was shot on Canon K35 lenses spherical, a complete departure. Just seems like people seem to do what they want with the franchise. Fincher went back and shot anamorphic for alien 3, but now says he will never shoot anamorphic again. "Off" to me says that there's something wrong with it, not an opinion.

@@BrennanMartin"Also, were you saying that Seven was gimmicky visually? I'm baffled." I see that Alien Resurrection as off and its visually copycatting Seven. That is my opinion. Nothing more nothing less. I hold Alien to a much higher standard than Dark City so yes, I'm fine with that movie copying the aesthetic. There are many movies that used the silver palette after Alien Resurrection that worked, even Saving Private Ryan and it fit. To use it in an alien film was lazy and trendy in my opinion. Alien and Aliens floors this film visually and that is the standard for this film, not other 90 films. Simply disagreeing with me and giving your point is great but stating what I'm saying is weird or suggesting that I'm saying Seven was gimmicky visually is misrepresentative of what I said.

Once again, @RepresentThis you're reaching. In my first comment I asked if you said Seven was gimmicky visually. Re-listening to it, it really seems you use distain when you say Seven lol. I mean it's fine, go right ahead, but I just found it odd... You said that aliens should be above gimmicky things like Seven did, in changing the colour. That seems like you also thing of colour grading or in the case of these older movies colour timing as a gimmick. And that you can make a movie visually appealing without such gimmicks. But every single movie you've ever seen has its colour timed or colours graded by artists and technicians to get a certain look. I guess that's why I'm confused by your point. It's like you're saying what every film does is a gimmick. Everyone manipulates contrast when grading right? I mean you're perfectly well to ignore my comments but it just felt like an odd thing to say is all.

@@BrennanMartin Believe what you want. I am not here to convert you to my thought. I told you my thoughts and then you came back at me with IT SEEMS. Then let it seem that way with you. I'm fine with disagreements, assumptions or outright ignoring my stance. I cover behind the scenes to understand why movies become the way they are and then I give MY insight to a film. I never ask others to subscribe to it. I'm just not interesting in circling a wagon around an ant hill that is being made into a mountain. Best wishes regardless.

As for Ripley not telling about the alien a contributing factor might be that she was utterly mocked by Weyland-Yutani and even lost her job because she spoke the truth. And as the novell suggested there might be trust issues, she is surrounded by criminals after all, who can she trust? Overall, a great analysis.

I remember watching this at the cinema and coming out disappointed. I expected something like Aliens instead I got this dark, moody and morose film that killed of two of my favorite characters from Aliens. But over the years it has grown on me as I have grown older as well. Going from bad, to decent to pretty nice with the Assembly Cut. Does it have problems, oh yes, but I still like it more than Resurrection, Prometheus, Covenant and the the latest turd, Romulus. One can only wonder what it would have been like without all the interference and a competent script from the beginning.

This was not a movie when I was a kid, but an event. It was like a documentary about UFO's. When the black guy at air traffic control asked, "Do you want to report a UFO ?" I was hooked. It was one of the best scenes in the film, to me. Then to have flight 19 mentioned was genius and that is an unbelievable story in its own right that to this day has never been resolved. So many people including me believe this movie was almost like a nudge from the government to slowly introduce and normalize ET's in order to get to where we are today with acceptance.

It's a fact that Julia Phillips used cocaine that was imported by George Jung and sold by Pablo Escobar. That's when coke was real coke and really good. It tasted like bubble gum and had no paranoia. It was a delight. George W. Bush forbid the exportation of ether to South America, so they had to switch to gasoline as a solvent. I remember it going up in flames if you lit it. That's my random trivia that has NOTHING to do with UFO's or the movie.

I love how the people at the table have a box of KFC. Just like other commenters, I'm so grateful to have been a kid during Spielberg's best hits. John Williams is a GENIUS and he was 50% of the movie, if not more because when you think of Close Encounters, Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, you immediately think of the music, not the scenes. He said having 5 notes was perfect, because 7 would be a melody, and he wanted to portray a message. This movie feels like the government was slowly lifting the veil to slowly introduce the public to ET's, like a documentary.
