      @@MrPigments If you're talking pigments, I'd say that I tend to believe anything you say😁. I do see the orange tint in the pyrole red, but the Monument Hobbies pyrole red is so darn vibrant that it reads as more "red" (to my old eyes, anyway). Nothing I do is scientifically deliberate. I go by feel. And I get bored really easy, which drives me to try different things. I could have just used a brown base coat for the red, but I've done that before. (Things go south in the next video where I try to mix orange and blue for the same effect). Speaking of pigments, what do you think of Monument Hobbies Magenta? I usually just call it "pink" when I use it in a video. I may be color blind. Shoot me a link to your discord in the comment that I left on your latest video!

    • @MrPigments
      @MrPigments 16 днів тому

      @@ThrehaneMiniatures So proacryl "magenta" is pink. To mix pink you need PR122 Quinacridone magenta and PW6 Titanium Dioxide Rutile(titanium white, there are 4 versions of this). To opacify a paint you add titanium white and about .25% carbon black, so calling it pink would be 1000% correct.

      @@MrPigments Yeah, in my previous "Red Cape" video I touched on the concept of companies adding adding black/white to their paints to increase opacity, and the problem it can cause when mixing miniature paints. It often results in a very gray version of the color that you're actually going for. I think that the Army Painter Fanatics line has taken this to a whole new level...greater opacity, but I find the hues quite desaturated.

      @@ThrehaneMiniatures I can help you whenever you need weird information about this stuff because I have it all and I have documents for it as well. There's always something in the professional side too that can fit those really niche needs that you need like a very opaque but very very bright yellow. It's just sometimes extremely expensive if you buy small bottles example: bismuth vanadate. However it is worth the cost if you're looking for an easy to use opaque vibrant yellow because you're not going to get better than something like golden soflat's version. I have a fairly large collection of paints and pigments that I can also use for color matching almost any paint.

    Using brown(specifically burnt umber) as a base coat is a very common thing for a lot of fine artists over the centuries to use for canvases as it provides a dark background but is much easier to paint over black. It's something I've swapped to entirely as it borders more on the verdaccio technique over grisaille and famous chiaroscuro painters like Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and da Vinci supposedly all used burnt umber as a base coat so they could sketch out the subject easier as they used charcoal pastels. There are two other ways to paint yellow over black but this requires venturing into professional paints to get the required ones, bismuth vanadate(no proacryl isnt good enough for this and I've tested it. It leaves a very green tone behind as they use a lot of extenders) and Cadmium(this is erroneously called toxic. It's really not but you cant airbrush it due to potential risks from breathing it in. Ingestion and getting it on your skin however is not a problem). So using brown is a very good idea. My personal way is using beige(4-8 parts unbleached titanium, 1 part burnt umber, 1 part yellow ochre if I need it) over a dark brown as it doesnt affect the color as much as brown and still being on a similar spectrum then adding in or glaze Pigment Violet 15 ultramarine violet for shading as this provides a very nice dark yellow that isn't orange and makes the yellow look more realistic. I also have a very good skin recipe thats super easy to replicate which is 1 part brown(something like rhyox hide, as close to burnt umber as possible), 1 part orange, add white to your desire. You might need to add in a little ochre like vallejo tank ochre or tau ochre(something as close to yellow ochre as possible) to get a good match but this is not a complicated mix to do as you see as its only 3 to 4 paints over the standard 5 or 6 for normal color theory recipes. Your skin tone recipe however is nearly identical using orange brown so it's fantastically simple.

    VERY IMPORTANT - RULES( not guidelines) when putting ANY. Spray can solvent based paint through your airbrush ; 1) decant the spray paint into a small jar- next-- MAKE SURE- you leave a DECENT size opening in the LID of the jar - have decanted the spray paint into!!! 2)this next part is SO CRUCIAL- LEAVE THE DECANTED PAINT- sit NO LESS THAN -24 hours- this lets the solvents dissolve! You can let it sit longer!! Do the SNIFF TEST - you should NOT be able to smell - strong Solvents!! 3) now you can put it in an airbrush- NO WATER, NO AIR BRUSH THINNER , NO MEDIUMS!!! 4) try NOT. To use your best airbrush- use a cheaper one- REALLY TRY - to use .5 needle!!! **** WHEN DONE PAINTING- clean immediately!!! Use - LACQUER THINNER! Make sure you shoot -WATER after done cleaning- this IS THE TEST- to see if the airbrush is CLEAN! Spray can paints DO WORK VERY GOOD - through an airbrush !Coverage is great - the paints are WELL BLENDED AT THE FACTORY LAST - and THEE MOST IMPORTANT- do not USE “KRYLON FUSION- PRIMER $$$$ - ONLY USE - KRYLON UNIVERSAL PRIMER( the PRIMER ONLY- NO PAINT/ PRIMER COMBO!!! I HAVE - REPEATEDLY TESTED AND OFTEN USED-- KRYLON UNIVERSAL- PRIMER! It DOES WORK GREAT - on ALL KINDS OF PLASTIC - and OTHER SURFACES -- WOOD!!! It SAYS - “primer” on the CAP! I FOUND. When EVEN AIRBRUSHING - ALL RATTLE CAN PAINTS - they STILL SHOULD - sit- at least 4 days - BEFORE- you CLEAR COAT ! I have NEVER had ANY - Sticky- pieces!! If you use -VARNISH - in ANY STEP- you ARE going to to have a VERY HIGH PROBABILITY- of getting - STICKY PIECES!! ITS THE VARNISH- not the paint! It can take a MONTH AT TIMES- to get varnish to - completely SET! I HAVE TESTED GOOD VARNISH and TESTED ALL THE ABOVE STEPS-MANY TIMES!! I feel extremely confident in my opinion!! 0:01

      @@ThrehaneMiniatures The ONLY advantages I am sure of: 1) the cost is so much lower than quality acrylic paints or acrylic inks.( you do get a lot more paint)----- ESPECIALLY compared to --ALL the JAPAN BASED paints people use on miniatures and CREATIX! 2) Whatever you put into the airbrush in terms of -- MATTE or Gloss finish, you WILL get that really solid coverage AND the Finish you chose -- the finishes are VERY NICE and they airrbrush VERY EVENLY! 3) Storing in a jar-- I have just shaken decanted spray paint -- 4 months later and -- then sprayed--- worked very nicely!! Your Acrylics ALWAYS dry matte, if you add GLOSS medium you HAVE NO CHOICE but to mix at getting the RIGHT combination to get THEE finish you want, rattle cans are ALREADY blended to give you and even finish( unless you hold your airbrush in ONE place and flood the spot you are painting) Acrylics do give you SO MANY MORE great paint choices and MUCH better choice in creating your own colors!---That is a big advantage! Acrylics do not take as much work to clean and make SURE the spray paint is ALL out( you do NOT want spray paint and Acrylics coming together--BIG MESS! (oil or solvents do NOT MIX with acrylics!( its thee oil not mixing with water problem!!) I do give Acrylics a BIG EDGE and do use them much more. The reason for the rant above is for people who can't afford quality acrylics AND the mediums! These people do not want to mix paints and just want that color that is in the can!

    Two things: 1) Nearly all plastics are hard and clear if the manufacturer doesn't do something to change that. Soft minis have an added plasticizer so that they can be more easily ejected from the molding machine and so that they're less likely to shatter. I'm pretty sure that the problem with spray primer and soft minis is an interaction between the plasticizer and the solvent in the paint. Note that even if you don't have a sticky surface right after priming a soft mini with a rattle can, the mini can later develop that kind of surface. 2) Testors Spray Lacquer comes in two different forms: Glosscote and Dullcote. It can be difficult to determine which you have for some labels, but definitely look for one of those two words on the label, because they are definitely not the same.

    • @ThrehaneMiniatures
      @ThrehaneMiniatures Місяць тому

      @@dougsundseth6904 You are absolutely correct about the difficulty in determining which spray lacquer you have now. As far as I know, it is no longer branded as "Dullcote" (in the US, anyway). It was much easier when that was on the label. Now you have to look at the product description for, "altering glossy surfaces to give them a flat look". Not quite as user friendly. Thank you for pointing that out! I should have been more thorough in the video.

    Here's an old-timer trick if you only need a little paint on primer for just a few minis. Take a small 3oz Dixie cup, point the spray primer down into it, cover with a paper towel, and spray for a bit. You can make a small puddle of primer you can paint on your minis without the side effects. 😉
